As is customary with new Sony Ericsson devices, several irritating bugs can be expected until updates start to be rolled out and the Xperia X10 is no exception. The bug I’m pertaining to at the moment is the dropping of the phones WiFi connection for seemingly no reason, even while in use, only for it to then reconnect and operate normally after 10-20 seconds or so.
Some of you may have experienced this strange loss of WiFi connectivity, other will not. It’s currently unclear whether this bug was introduced with the R1FA016 firmware update or if the R1FA014 version is also affected but I have managed to track down the apparent cause of the problem.
Since updating to R1FA016 I had been noticing frequent WiFi disconnections even while actively browsing. Being in an area of poor GSM coverage at home this was particularly irritating with little or no network connection to fall back on for continued browsing. Shortly though it became apparent that this poor coverage is not only a separate irritation but is in fact directly causing the problems with the WiFi on the X10!
As you can see in the video below the WiFi is happily connected until the phone loses network coverage. At this point you would usually expect your WiFi to carry on regardless but the X10 mysteriously decides to turn off it’s WiFi before reactivating it and reconnecting to the network automatically:
If this wasn’t bad enough however, the same thing happens when the phone reconnects to the GSM network:
As you can imagine, in an area where the signal comes and goes quite frequently, this makes the WiFi about as reliable a connection as a water soluble rope in a rain storm! My concern at this point is how long it will take Sony Ericsson to acknowledge this issue and issue a fix, especially as it will not be experienced by users who don’t suffer from dropped network coverage.

My old x10 (had to be sent away for repair because it stopped reading the sim) had no issues, but this new x10 has some of the above. I have a hidden SSID and an access list set up on the router (basically you have to be on the allowed MAC list to connect even if you have the correct password). The phone will not connect to the wifi unless I don’t have the network hidden. Once the phone is connected the network can be hidden again, but if I move out of the area of the network or switch the phone wifi off and then back on again, then it fails to connect stating “network not in range” when I know full well it is. The only work around for me is not to have the network hidden.
Something else I’ll mention regarding 3G connection issues. I noticed that the new x10 would not connect to my 3G mobile network (I use 3). For some reason the phone did not import the APN settings from the sim. So I went into wireless controls, then mobile networks, then access point names (APN). I then created a new APN and manually input the correct setting for my mobile network (I found these on the net). Straight away I had 3G on my phone.
I had this phone for 2 days and sort it out by adding the MAC address to the router and that seemed to sort out the problem. Much like David Beer’s solution. I was also worried about the address that the phone was given. I renewed the addresses on the laptops and phones in my house so its all gravy now. Keep the phone….it comes alive once its Live.
Does anyone find the ringer/media volume rather low? I have an 5800 XpressMusic and that freakin’ loud. Or are my standards too high coming off an XpressMusic phone?
Having fixed this bug with R2BA020, SE have now made the master stroke of bringing it right back again!!!
when i connect my phone using wifi it shows connected but when i try to browse internet it says pa ge cannot be displayed…can anyone help???
I dont have any problem connecting wirelessly to my home router (although I do have to switch on wifi in the settings, since just using the shortcut wifi icon doesnt automatically connect me to the network even though it does switch the wifi on), but my main issue is connecting to public networks, such as my university wireless network. It manages to connect but when I try to browse the net it says that I have no connection. I thought it was something to do with smartphones not having a strong enough wifi connection, but my friend who has a iphone 3gs was able to connect and browse with no problem.
SE Xperia X10 is such a great phone but SE needs to be swift to provide software updates and fixes to avoid losing future potential customers.
The problem that I have is that the Mini Pro used to connect to WiFi networks without a problem but now will not connect to any networks. Not sure why. Hopefully someone might have a solution because I know that resetting the phone will fix the issue. I heard about an update from android 1.6 to 2.1 that will be released sometime soon. Any idea when and will this fix the bug/s?
I have had this phone for 5 days and am finding it impossible to connect properly via WiFi to my home broadband network (ironically, both the phone and broadband are provided by o2). The phone finds the network OK and accepts the WEP key, but always fails at the point of “obtaining IP address”. Totally infuriating inability to use one of the key features of the phone. Any ideas what the cause might be and how to fix?
My X10 mini pro would not connect to my home wireless network, just give connection error.
I then used static IP adress, and now it connects without any problem.
I also have the same problem with a Macbook Pro, again resorting to Static IP.
However my 3 Windows 7 PCs from HP and Dell and my HTC S740 Windows mobile phone connect without static IP
Maybe a router incompatability issue? The router is an Netgear WNR2000.
I would recommend all with this problem to give static IP a try.
I’m fed up with my x10. Spends more time than not with no signal for calls or internet, crashes regularily, but takes good quality photos. I’m with vodafone and have backed them into a corner to swap me away from this useless brick. Been a se guy for 5 years and pretty angry with them now. Lost me for good.
My x10 finds wifi networks that are all over the place but can´t seem to find my home network. The network is not hidden and is only WPA2 password protected. Since I have 2 houses it seemed to start working in one of them after several reboots of the router but in the second one nothing. Any ideas about this? Did anyone find this error as well?
Lmic, how do you set your static ip? i got the same problem
Got my X10 today… sweet piece of machinery but will take some time to tame this beast.
Re the wifi… i had the same problem but fixed it by turning off mac filtering in the broadband modem… connects instantly now.
Hi all.
My SE Xperia X10 mini is suffering as well form WiFi issues. Yesterday I’ve updated it (using SE’s desktop update software, as the update over-the-air would always fail due to connection problems). Phone seems better now (although I have to figure out a way to later on remove all the vodafone crap-ware and game demos that are hardcoded into this image – i.e., no uninstall option) but it still has issues connecting to wifi networks. Don’t know why, the connection simply drops (even when I am using it!). To regain connectivity, I have to fully disable wireless and retry (and do this again if the network doesn’t show up, although in reach). Anynone still with similar issues?

Hi i got a big porblem with my x 10 and that is when i try to connect wifi after few mins it says unable to start wifi so can any one help me plzzzzzzzzzz.
I just got my new Xperia X10 mini pro and got quite impressed with it – a small but mighty device.
It is running on Android 2.1 update 1.
But I notice though an issue regarding its WiFi behaviour.
If the WiFi network is hidden (SSID not broadacast), the mini pro can not connect. Whereas other WiFI devices (Nintendo DSi / laptop / iPhone4/ Nokia 5800 & N95 ) have no issues at all connecting to my WiFi access point even if it’s set not to broadcast SSID.
My Wifi access point is configured to use WPA2-PSK security and TKIP/AES encryption.
I have to turn on SSID broadcast in my WiFi access point so that my X10 mini pro can connect to it.
I believe this a software bug.
Any news when this bug will be fixed?
Thanks.
PS:
At home I am using this WiFi access point: Speedport W503V type A from T-Home which has an integrated WiFi function.
My advice is to check AP (router) settings. TX rates must be Auto, wireless mode – mixed.
I had a problem and solved it!
I have a SE X10 with 2.1 update. It wouldnt connect to my home wifi. After I added the phones MAC address to the wireless router, it now connects no problem!
Wifi worked fine for me, until one day it didn’t. I tried adding the static IP manually, adding the MAC address to the router, reset the router, reset the phone…Well, everything I could think of to no avail. I feel cheated >.<
Got SE Experia mini pro. Updated to 2.1-update1. It was able to connect to my d-link wifi router, but brouser wouldn’t access any pages. Although I’ve got perfect connection to the web via GPRS.
So played with wifi settings on the router and got ones that worked for me:
Security Mode : WPA2 ONLY
Cipher Type : AES
PSK / EAP : PSK
Seems like the problem was with cipher type.
When Cipher Type was TKIP I could connect to wifi but coulnd’t access any web pages via brouser.
Regarding the issue that WiFi is disconnected after a while. There is one option under advanced in the Wireless menu: Something like “Swith to mobile data when screen saver is on” I changed that on to “never” and now it is working fine.
Lars
I canceled out the wifi issue by backing up my phone pics and numbers then going to factory reset. Deletes the bug that is downloaded by update for x10
Try reseting your xperia to the factory setting, go to settings/privacy, settings reset the phone to its original settings without erasing user data. this will also erase if it so happened that you put a IP static address that you cant find a way to delete it. then if you have a WEP secured internet host, add in your SSID manually in your xperia under wi-fi settings, add wi-fi network even if you can already see your network name, then type in ssid, wep, automatic, save.
I hope this would help you out. It works for me……
There is no actually a “BUG: with our xperia, we are just messing around it, I tot it was a bug, but after having it reset to its factory settings, it has fixed the problem. so even you have a secured internet sharing you will be able to connect now by just adding your secured network manually, refer to my first post.
why my phone xperia x10 cannot detect public network in my university..anyone knows it?pliz help me…
i have sony ericsson xperia mini x10 with me,,, can ne1 tell me how to connect this phone to my broadband connection…..
hellpppp!!!!! my xperia mini pro stays connected to wifi for about 20 seconds at a time….i can connect to the network NO PROBLEM. but it does not stay connected.. it drops every 20 seconds… and takes about 40 seconds to reconnect…. and this is annoyin the phone is pretty much useless to me since the wifi does not work
yes i hav tried it with multiple networks
already reset my phone to factory settings
yes i do hav the latest software update
To Darkchild:
To solve ur problem, go to browser(laptop or Desktop)..
1. type ur router ip address
2. right now u should be in the Router Config
3. go to advanced setting( different router have different name). maybe its just settings
4. then, make ur config like this
Security Mode : WPA2 ONLY
Cipher Type : AES
PSK / EAP : PSK
Ive try it and IT WORKS.. THANKS TO NORVOG
well try to change the channel of wi-fi try 7 or 11 channel …keep changing the channels and it will solve ur problem……in my case it worked…..channel 13 n 1 is not working with sony ..also u can set ur wireless setting to auto channel…..thanxxxx
I had same problem on Xperia X10 Mini. Problem was solved with install of custom 2.2(Froyo) ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961707 It is realy great ROM, all works fine.
My X10 experienced the same thing when i just had the thing for a day i tried to change the chanel of my outer and it worked
Seems like update to 2.1 breaks wireless and BT connection.
So I rooted the phone removed included games from /system/app and did a factory reset and restored contacts.
Wireless and bluetooth works perfectly since then.
I took all your advises and here’s how I had my Xperia X10i under 2.1 updated 1 sw worked.
on the phone:
manually set the ip static configurations which i took from my router settings
reset the settings
reboot the phone
on the router settings:
i tried changing the infrastructures and authentication but it still doesnt work.
thanks to rav890, i changed the channel to 7 or 11 and my phone started detecting the wifi connection.
hope something works for you.
i agree that its not a bug but i think SE forgot to set the sw and hw configuration to automaticall detect settings like this. i ope when gingerbread is available, they can fix this as well.
BIG WOOT WOOT to rav890!
!
Sorry to say but gingerbread is not the answer. I have my X10 mini pro flashed with cyanogenmod7 /based on gingerbread/
and the problems are the same. Or, better to say, similar. Because after extensive searching on the web I found out that the problems with wifi are:
1. of various kind
2. not specific to this smartphone
3. not specific to any android version
4. not specific to any kind of router
5. solutions that worked for some people are not universally applicable
My personal situation is like this: phone and android as mentioned above. Works fine in almost every situation, in my work, with every free or encrypted access point in my area, EXCEPT for my home wifi! It is virtual access point on Windows 7 /no difference if it´s set up manually or with Connectify, Virtual AP, … every SW I could possibly find and try/. My wife´s HTC Wildfire works fine, one laptop with W XP pro SP3 works fine. Just my X10 mini pro has this problem: I can connect to AP, recieve an IP, but I cannot get to the internet. Strange thing is that SOMETIMES it can just for a while even if I hadn´t touched anything. Also there´s this second problem – connection to AP keeps dropping and reconnecting. But even when it´s stable for a while, still there´s no internet connection. Tried tweaking the channels in the router /in this case my wifi card on my PC/, no success. Tried chaging every possible setting I could find, no success. Now I´m thinking of returning xperia and getting the same model of HTC as my wife has. But – you know what? There is no guarantee that this will help me. Because people describe situations when two identical phones with identical settings may differ in that that one has problems with wifi and the second one doesn´t. Crazy situation. I´m quite new with smartphones and I´m very dissapointed with how unrelaiable they are in this sense.
Was so upset with this wifi connection problem on my xperia neo that after searching in 3 languages for over 2 days I realize there was no real solution… So I downloaded “virtual router manager” on my pc and setup a new virtual ROUTER, just name it 8 letters password and start… And of course the android phone got connected in 3 secs with no problemo! Hope this will help someone desperate as I was just before I settle this simple and free solution. Only catch is PC or laptop must On all time, other use is temporary sharing of wifi at home without messing with real router configuration. I’m just using it right now and it’s pretty fast, would say better than the real stuff.
A little F***ing solidarity goes a long way.
No, this is not a solution for everybody (certainly not for me). This has nothing to do with Virtual Router, you can also try Connectify or any software access point out there or you can set up a SoftAP in W7 in commandline (netsh wlan set hostednetwork …) still it won`t work. Meaning you`ll get the connection, IP adress, but no data flow. When capturing with Wireshark I can see that SE mini pro keeps sending ARP requests, gateway keeps responding with correct MAC and IP but SE mini pro somehow isn`t able to keep it in ARP table. When inspecting the ARP table in the phone with Net Status.apk (from market) I can see that sometimes, just for a while, MAC and IP of the gateway shows up but then disappears, most of times it doesn`t show up at all. What`s important – I can see this behaviour only on ONE computer – no matter which way I use to set up the SoftAP. This clearly shows that the problem lies in some kind of miscommunication between SE mini pro and THIS PARTICULAR wifi card. (FYI its Ralink R 73 USB wifi card. Other ones I tested with good results were Intels and Atheroses).
After about a month of struggling I gave up and bought a wifi router. No problems now.
rav890: thank you very much. I changed the modem channel to 7 and connected immidiately.
