X10 to Get Android 2.1 in Q4

Sony Ericsson have confirmed that the much anticipated Android 2.1 update will be coming the X10’s way in Q4 of this year, which would place it sometime between October and December. It’s reasonable to assume that they will try and avoid doing it right before Christmas so October seems a fair bet. Note also that they have confirmed that the update will be 2.1, not 2.2. Both the X10 Mini and Mini Pro will also be receiving the upgrade to 2.1.

It’s not just an Android upgrade though, there will be some extra value added to the handset too. For example, the X10 will be getting the ability to record HD video at 720p. Timescape and Mediascape will also be receiving an upgrade to “make them even smarter and richer“. DLNA support will also be added. All in all it’s looking like a pretty decent upgrade, a bit of a shame it’s so far away, but at least we have a timeframe for it.

There is an update coming a bit sooner though, albeit nowhere near as big. It will address bug fixes and usability issues with the X10 and should be available within the next few weeks. It’s also worth mentioning that there was talk of this update also addressing the battery issues many have been having, with one Sony Ericsson representative claiming that the forthcoming update would effectively double battery life.

October……at the earliest?? That is pretty far away! I suppose that so long as they do not postpone I can wait. Especially if the upcoming updates will address some of the more immediate issues ie battery life. But October?? Yikes!

Well we already knew it would receive the update but now at least they have confirmed that they are to continue working in geographical time and that we’ll have to wait an age for it.

The X10 is not getting the credit it should right now because it’s sen to be outdated on Donut and in all honesty an update to Eclair so late will not help this as it will still be outdated in comparison to the Froyo devices which will likely be out by then.

    At least they’re trying <-<

imo 2.1 would be “old” by then  since 2.2 is all ready coming..
