X1 Boots Ubuntu

The X1 might have been overshadowed by newer handsets from Sony Ericsson, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t still grab the odd headline. Case in point, people seem to be porting just about every OS they can think of onto it. This week the boffins at XDA Developers have managed to her running Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 of all things! By the looks of things functionality isn’t too hot here, but then I suppose that’s to be expected when running a desktop OS on a handheld device.

It must be very laggy… But It’s an awesome performance for a phone!

Jock – you don’t see Ubuntu on an iPhone :p.

  3. jock says:

No but Linux and Android by a modified iBoot ;)

  4. photographer says:

Lolly – I don´t need ubuntu on my iPhone :p I have iPhone OS that does not need to be replaced ^^

    OpeniBoot
There is an open source version of iBoot being made so that Linux on the iPhone will work. You can check out the source here. It is VERY useful if you are ever reversing iBoot and do not feel like finding out what certain hardware registers are yourself.

    ;)

EDIT: And as a X1 user you’d find UNIX OS as Ubuntu a dream as Windows Mobile Sucks (IMO). But iPhone already has UNIX (iPhone OS) and it doesn’t need any changes except for the jailbreak ;)

  6. photographer says:

“oh wait, I have to boot my device into winmo so I can reply to the sms I had to be notified of by email, because my phone doesnt work under ubuntu ^^”

  7. Manny says:

okay… urm, iPhone is crap and the X1 rules (in hardware and now maybe software) … sorry just wanted to say that :p no offence to iPhone owners lol but yeah i want to try this ubuntu OS it looks good :)

  8. photographer says:

Actually iphone and xperia are equally specced.

  9. Manny says:

that’s correct Sander. :) btw, im going to install an iPhone ROM onto my X1, i just downloaded it now it looks great. hope it runs great though, if it doesnt ill try this ubuntu ROM then…

  10. jock says:

iPhone 3GS powers a faster CPU then X1. Also iPhones OS is much more optimized than Windows Mobile which makes iPhone 2G run iPhone OS stabile without much power.

    Oh and:

    - Hey mate can i borrow your phone i need to call?

    - Sorry, it has Ubuntu, it’s not a phone anymore it’s a bad handheld Linux powered PC.

Something X1 is missing out on though is open GL ES ;) it has 1.1 and iPhone runs 2.0 :)

    x2 has it

remember, it was anounced February 2008, wich is 2 years back. So no wonder it has a slower processor then a new device <-<

  14. jock says:

First iPhone (Release 2004 if i remember correct) has Open GL 2.0 while X1 don’t, though the incredible Satio got OpenGL 2.0 when released in 2009. Bad move SE ;)

Ermm.. You’re terribly wrong Jock, first iPhone was released 2007 and it had OpenGL 1.1. Only 3GS and iTouch 3g 32/64gb versions have OpenGL 2.0 (iTouch 8/16gb has 1.1) support

who cares about release dates when you´re comparing hardware… If I´m going to buy a phone I won´t say “oh I´ll take the X1. It’s worse in terms of hardware but then again it was released earlier so then its fine!”

And the first iPhone was released in 2007 with open GL ES 1.1 jock, lol.

  17. jock says:

hmm i read iPhone had an update for OpenGL perhaps they meant that 3Gs where the update lol. Then my bad, still SE is slow with updates, W995 camera does worse pictures with it’s 8mp than both iPhone 3G and 3Gs all SE does is adding megapixels. that was my point that SE is slow updating stuff, and who need 12 megapixels its like 10 pc screens next to eachother.

If you both read my post i wasn’t sure about the date ;)

FAIL! :p even on 800*600 you can only fill 5 screens :D

    do the maths :p

    12.000.000 = 4000*3000 pixel

    4000 / 10 = 400

  19. jock says:

And your desktop has 5 screens?

  20. Lollylost100 says:

Last time I checked mine had one :).

no has 2, but not running 800*600

  23. Manny says:

well, here is my X1 running the iPhone ROM (OS)

    Posted Image

    Posted Image

its really stable and smooth … and has all the animations and effects as the iPhone …

  24. jock says:

Looks like these chinese sciPhone and hiPhone lol. I’d rather use some HTC rom than that because it looks like the worst copy ever :p

  25. Manny says:

well, its the first version of the iPhone ROM so you would expect it to look crap lol, just admit it jock X1 is better :p

  26. photographer says:

You can have an iPhone skinned ROM but that won´t make it run iPhone apps, which is the big power of iPhone OS, mate :)

  27. Manny says:

I agree with you again Sander :) but the X1’s power is that it is more customizable than the iPhone e.g. running different ROM’s changing the whole looks of the phone etc, now you cant say thats a bad thing… and that the iPhone can do that. all it is IS Apps to be honest lol

  28. photographer says:

iPhone’s do not need other ROMs… iphone OS is awesome. You can skin every tiny 1×1 pixel image on the whole phone if you’d want to. We install apps from cydia to change or add functionality, even to stock apps. This is far more customizable than having to stick to one ROM and its advantage :)

  29. Manny says:

fair enough you and iPhone win :p

  30. MikLSP says:

I’m sorry but if there’s anything the iPhone ISN’T it’s customisable!

Call screen after screen of icon grids in any order you like customisation if you like but it’s quite simply NOT!

All iPhones look the same and they all do the same, join the crowd, I’ll stand over here and watch the herd!

  31. jock says:

Um the jailbreak has many things such as Pogoplank and iBlank icons and alot more apps which lets you put icons in many ways you want :)

  32. MikLSP says:

But hold on, you don’t need to modify the iPhone OS because it’s so amazing as it is!!!!!! (apparently)

  33. jock says:

I never said iPhone OS was good without jaibreak i said it don’t need as much power as Windows Mobile do look at X1 for a example it’s slow compared to iPhone 3GS but it’s hardware matches 3GS only 70mhz slower CPU. iPhone OS without jailbreak is very boring it’s not bad but for customization it sucks. But now we have Jailbreak so i see it as a part of iPhone OS.

    Addition:

    http://macthemes.net…php?id=16802209

There’s a changed layout and that’s only one.

Apple with Macs and iPhones has great designers try find so many good icon makers for any other platform :p

  34. MikLSP says:

I know you didn’t say it but therefore we have conflicting arguements on what is good about the iPhone OS.

I would agree that it is good at what it does and what Apple want you to do but if I was to choose a device to customise, the iPhone would be at the bottom of the list.

It is of course better than the X1 because, let’s face it WinMo is a joke and porting another OS just results in bugs but the topic wasn’t started to determine whether an X1 running Ubuntu was better or worse than the iPhone.

  35. jock says:

Defending iPhone with jailbreak in term of customization in front of a Android fan is impossible don’t you agree? :p

  36. MikLSP says:

Yes, but perhaps less impossible than defending WinMo in front of, er…anyone!

Having said that I’d still rather have a working WinMo ROM than a non-functioning ported OS. It’s interesting to see what these guys manage to make run on other devices but the vast majority of it is a waste of time :S
