The Sony Ericsson W980 has just been awarded with the EISA award for Best European Music Phone. EISA is an assiocation of 50 special interest magazines from a total of 19 countries – each year they select an array of EISA award winners in lots of different categories, and this year, the Sony Ericsson W980 won as the best music phone. Here’s the official EISA comment;
“Who could resist this piano-black Walkman-series phone? It’s a quad-band handset loaded with 8 GB of internal memory, a 3.2 Megapixel camera, an FM tuner, Bluetooth stereo, and a music player that operates even with the phone flip-lid closed. Opened out, the handset reveals its 2.2-inch QVGA display with 262k colors and stunning picture quality. One incredibly valuable innovation is the built-in FM radio transmitter. This broadcasts phone-based music playback to a standard car radio, even transferring artist and track details via RDS. The music player handles a wide variety of audio file formats, and automatically sorts tracks according to a range of criteria. Finally, two excellent features are the SenseMe and Shake control. These group tracks by mood, enabling track changes and entire playlist shuffling with just a simple flick of the hand.”
Although it doesn’t say much about the audio quality, the W980 is a monster when it comes to audio quality. This has been proven by German TESTfactory, and I can do nothing but agree. The audio quality really is top notch.
Congrats, SE!

It is a pity Sony Ericsson didn’t put the same amount of effort into the audio quality of the W960i, the supposedly top of the range Walkman phone before the W980.
“… and automatically sorts tracks according to a range of criteria”
This is actually very annoying when you don’t want the phone to do it but have no option to disable the function.

I’ve been using the phone for a few months now and it’s really great. My only gripe is that the front part scratches way too easily. They should have used a different plastic.

Thanks michell, this blog have been quiet for some days now….., some of us are UIQ-WALKMAN fans, and we are expecting a new UIQ-WALKMAN phone to replace the unporpular W960, but up till now we have not seen a single sign towards this direction, is it the kind of changes we are expecting from sony ericsson? or is it that sony ericsson doesn’t want to continue with UIQ? i don’t understand! pls Michell, i need some answers.

Based on GSMArena’s audio test. W980 had really impressed them with the audio quality. so i one important aspect of being a music phone is covered with this model, bundle that with a very impressive design, and exotic features as well as quality music experience, its no doubt that this will win awards! thumbs up to komiyama-san for bringing this thing up!

Hahahahaha… I can’t wait to see Eldar’s reaction when he learns that an SE won the award for best sound quality over his beloved Nokias, motoROKRS et al with “Dedicated sound processors”, “3.5mm jacks” and the works…
BTW, congrats, SE. We need more good news periodically.

Its just hype when people say it won for best audio quality. it won due to the fact of it features eg senseme, shake control, walkman application and the design of being a music oriented phone. Still no 3.5mm audio jack. If you want pure music audio quality N91 8GB. N91 have far superior audio quality. I have a N91 8GB which came with the boose earphones and the sony ercisson sound quality is nothing compared to it. “The music player handles a wide variety of audio file formats” lol give me a break what the heck they talking about they dumb or what? for example N91 supports or Nseries phones support way more audio files than W980i and try this if you dont belive me convert a Song to aacPlus (.M4A, .AAC) and embed a album art into the file and watch the sony walkman player will not load up the album art and audio qaulity sucks. Its just dumb really they get turned on by the design of the phone and just give it an award.

What’s the big deal about a 3.5mm jack on a phone?
Aren’t the supplied adapters from SE good enough for you to use your own headphones?

W980 is music phone. It should be compatible with all popular headphones in the market without adapter like many other music phones and mp3 players.
What happen if you leaves your headphone and adapter at home and you want to take someone’s headphone?
Carrying a headphone is uncomfortable enough, now you have to carry one more adapter with you!
I always use bluetooth headset when driving, when listening to music, I have to use brand standard headphone. I don’t use the handfree set that come with the phone.
3.5mm jack is small thing, but it is not small problem with music-specialized cellphone.

No thank you. I’d much rather not have someone else’s earwax in my ears.
“Carrying a headphone is uncomfortable enough, now you have to carry one more adapter with you!”
No it’s not. If you haven’t figured it out yet (like most SE users did) by now, there is NO NEED to detach the headphone from the adapter. Use it as one piece.
“I don’t use the handfree set that come with the phone.”
It’s not a massive protrusion or anything. Just a small bulge halfway through. It, in no way, makes life more difficult for the user.
We’ve been through this argument many times by now. But I just felt like pointing out the obvious pile of nonsense.

Dude, if you wanna shoot, shoot. Don’t talk.
Translation: You’ve been preaching this line about “Thinking of saying goodbye to SE” for a while now. Why not do exactly that and stop complaining for once and for all?
It’d save us all some effort and Michell some web space, you know?

I am not here to complain, I am here to make stubborn heads listen to right things.
