W980 wins EISA award for best music phone

The Sony Ericsson W980 has just been awarded with the EISA award for Best European Music Phone. EISA is an assiocation of 50 special interest magazines from a total of 19 countries - each year they select an array of EISA award winners in lots of different categories, and this year, the Sony Ericsson W980 won as the best music phone. Here’s the official EISA comment;

“Who could resist this piano-black Walkman-series phone? It’s a quad-band handset loaded with 8 GB of internal memory, a 3.2 Megapixel camera, an FM tuner, Bluetooth stereo, and a music player that operates even with the phone flip-lid closed. Opened out, the handset reveals its 2.2-inch QVGA display with 262k colors and stunning picture quality. One incredibly valuable innovation is the built-in FM radio transmitter. This broadcasts phone-based music playback to a standard car radio, even transferring artist and track details via RDS. The music player handles a wide variety of audio file formats, and automatically sorts tracks according to a range of criteria. Finally, two excellent features are the SenseMe and Shake control. These group tracks by mood, enabling track changes and entire playlist shuffling with just a simple flick of the hand.”

Although it doesn’t say much about the audio quality, the W980 is a monster when it comes to audio quality. This has been proven by German TESTfactory, and I can do nothing but agree. The audio quality really is top notch.

Congrats, SE! :)

  2. maniacks says:

wen will it release in india?

  3. Garry says:

It is a pity Sony Ericsson didn’t put the same amount of effort into the audio quality of the W960i, the supposedly top of the range Walkman phone before the W980.

“… and automatically sorts tracks according to a range of criteria”

This is actually very annoying when you don’t want the phone to do it but have no option to disable the function.

  4. Ché Borko says:

    it´s the w980i…

  5. JJ says:

I’ve been using the phone for a few months now and it’s really great. My only gripe is that the front part scratches way too easily. They should have used a different plastic.

  6. Chris S says:

Absolutetly stunning phone but one question to SE….why….why……couldn’t alicia have lived!! That would have been amazing they could have been the best flip phone duo, give me a phone like this with a 5mp camera and i would buy in an  instant :D

  7. Hasan says:

Nice to have some good news to counter the unbelievable amount SE bashing going on lately.

I’m waiting for the C902 though, candybars are my thing

A high end SE walkman phone should stand out from the rest not just software wise,i just bought the W980…,men! the audio quality of the phone is exceptionally brilliant.I judge my music phone first by its audio quality, then any order thing follows. i wonder why nobody is comenting on W980 audio quality.pls michell i think SE fan really needs a review of this champion.

  9. Rapid says:

Hi , Are there a list for some previous winner devices ?

  10. sam says:

Thanks michell, this blog have been quiet for some days now….., some of us are UIQ-WALKMAN fans, and we are expecting a new UIQ-WALKMAN phone to replace the unporpular W960, but  up till now we have not seen a single sign towards this direction, is it the kind of changes we are expecting from sony ericsson? or is it that sony ericsson doesn’t want to continue with UIQ? i don’t understand! pls Michell, i need some answers.

  11. razec says:

Based on GSMArena’s audio test. W980 had really impressed them with the audio quality. so i one important aspect of being a music phone is covered with this model, bundle that with a very impressive design, and exotic features as well as quality music experience, its no doubt that this will win awards! thumbs up to komiyama-san for bringing this thing up!

  12. synn says:

Hahahahaha… I can’t wait to see Eldar’s reaction when he learns that an SE won the award for best sound quality over his beloved Nokias, motoROKRS et al with “Dedicated sound processors”, “3.5mm jacks” and the works… :-D

BTW, congrats, SE. We need more good news periodically.

Its just hype when people say it won for best audio quality. it won due to the fact of it features eg senseme, shake control, walkman application and the design of being a music oriented phone. Still no 3.5mm audio jack. If you want pure music audio quality N91 8GB. N91 have far superior audio quality. I have a N91 8GB which came with the boose earphones and the sony ercisson sound quality is nothing compared to it.  “The music player handles a wide variety of audio file formats” lol give me a break what the heck they talking about they dumb or what? for example N91 supports or Nseries phones support way more audio files than W980i and try this if you dont belive me convert a Song to aacPlus (.M4A, .AAC) and embed a album art into the file and watch the sony walkman player will not load up the album art and audio qaulity sucks.  Its just dumb really they get turned on by the design of the phone and just give it an award.

  15. Bloob says:

What’s the big deal about a 3.5mm jack on a phone?
Aren’t the supplied adapters from SE good enough for you to use your own headphones?

  16. tired se supporter says:

W980 is music phone. It should be compatible with all popular headphones in the market without adapter like many other music phones and mp3 players.

What happen if you leaves your headphone and adapter at home and you want to take someone’s headphone?

Carrying a headphone is uncomfortable enough, now you have to carry one more adapter with you!

I always use bluetooth headset when driving, when listening to music, I have to use brand standard headphone. I don’t use the handfree set that come with the phone.

3.5mm jack is small thing, but it is not small problem with music-specialized cellphone.

  17. synn says:

“What happen if you leaves your headphone and adapter at home and you want to take someone’s headphone?”

No thank you. I’d much rather not have someone else’s earwax in my ears.

“Carrying a headphone is uncomfortable enough, now you have to carry one more adapter with you!”

No it’s not. If you haven’t figured it out yet (like most SE users did) by now, there is NO NEED to detach the headphone from the adapter. Use it as one piece.

“I don’t use the handfree set that come with the phone.”

It’s not a massive protrusion or anything. Just a small bulge halfway through. It, in no way, makes life more difficult for the user.

We’ve been through this argument many times by now. But I just felt like pointing out the obvious pile of nonsense.

  18. tired se supporter says:

Many users deny SE phone for such a “nonsense” reasons!

  19. Waco says:

    By many you meant you?

  20. synn says:

    Haha, yes, he did. :-D

  21. tired se supporter says:

I am using p1i, but If SE is still stubborn like you, I will say goodbye to this brand.
The market share of SE now reflects the number of love or hate.

  22. synn says:

Dude, if you wanna shoot, shoot. Don’t talk.

Translation: You’ve been preaching this line about “Thinking of saying goodbye to SE” for a while now. Why not do exactly that and stop complaining for once and for all?

It’d save us all some effort and Michell some web space, you know? ;-)

  23. tired se supporter says:

    Come on.
I am not here to complain, I am here to make stubborn heads listen to right things.

  24. tired se supporter says:

I know it is not easy. But I will try my best.

  25. tired se supporter says:

    :)

  26. Waco says:

Well, I believe that every SE supporter has some reasons for supporting SE, we’re not stubborn. Every brand has positive aspects and negative too. You are trying to show us all the bad things about SE, but you keep forgetting the good ones. I think SE has still much more good points than bad and is still the best among today’s brands on the market. Like was said, if you don’t like SE than stop complaining and start to support some other brand, don’t waste our time.

  27. tired se supporter says:

In my country there is a saying:
“If a man give me the right praise, he is my friend, if a man criticize me correctly, he is my master.”

Everyone here knows the good of SE. I maybe the only one say the bad of SE, I think everyone here also knows, but they want to hide.

  28. synn says:

“if a man criticize me correctly”

So when are you planning to start doing this?

  29. tired se supporter says:

“So when are you planning to start doing this?”

I have no reason to plan.

If someone criticize me correctly, I will say thank to him.

If someone try to make me angry, I will smile :).

  30. Waco says:

Does that mean you thank us all? :)

  31. tired se supporter says:

    Have you got my thank?

  32. Waco says:

I don’t get your last post, we’ve criticized you correctly so you should thank us.

  33. synn says:

I think we got our proverbs mixed up here. LOL.

Tired so ‘n so, your usage of the proverb implies that you’re the only one around here that criticizes SE correctly. In reality however, all you have is the same old tired (pun definitely intended) arguments about 3.5mm jacks n such (that we have heard… I dunno 164553873 times by now? ). So I was just wondering when you will come up with the RIGHT criticism.

  34. tired se supporter says:

I am sorry, It is just the the problem of different opinions.

I don’t think I have been criticized correctly.

For example, I said “What happen if you leaves your headphone and adapter at home and you want to take someone’s headphone?”. Synn said “No thank you. I’d much rather not have someone else’s earwax in my ears.” Synn considers everyone has dirty ears, I don’t. May be we shouldn’t share earphones, but headphones are ok. If you are affraid of sharing headphones, please take my advice, don’t ever shake someone’s hand.

I said “Carrying a headphone is uncomfortable enough, now you have to carry one more adapter with you!”
Synn said “No it’s not. If you haven’t figured it out yet (like most SE users did) by now, there is NO NEED to detach the headphone from the adapter. Use it as one piece.”
Not all things are used as one piece is one piece. Emagine, when you combine the adapter with customized headphones, the standard headphones’ wires are always longer than the original’s.
No one can persuade me that not using original handfree is wrong. Bluetooth headset is much better (in my opinion).
If you judge the right or wrong basing on the quantity, nothing left to say. :)
Finally, this website is for everyone shows its opinion of hate or love of SE phones, it is not for someone to criticize other’s opinion. :)

  35. tired se supporter says:

I still criticize SE phones until its phones have 3.5mm jack.
I think SE will no longer change its mind.

Is there anyone bets with me? :D

  36. tired se supporter says:

I means I MAY BE the one. And I don’t want to be anyone’s master. The proverb implies that criticizing is valuable.
I am happy, if there are few ones have the same opinion with me :D

  38. synn says:

Jesus.H.Christ! Take a breather, dude… FOUR posts explaining yourself? :-D

Well, I wouldn’t go through such pains, so here’s all you need to know, reader’s digest version.

    1) Change your name. You ain’t supporting SE and have never done so. “Enthusiastic SE Critic” would be a better name for you. :-D

    2) Your complaints are petty and laughable at best and repetitive and tiresome at worst. For pete’s sake, go buy something else, be content and spare us from this verbal diarrhoea. Please.

    3) Get a better command of the English language. This is an honest suggestion. Most of us here are lost trying to comprehend what you imply.

    4) Earwax is icky.

    5) I’m done reasoning with you.

  39. tired se supporter says:

I am not native English speaking. Forgive me :D
And maybe we have different cultures.
In our life, if you want to be respected by other people, please have respect for everyone.

As I said 3.5mm jack is just a silly mistake that SE tries to protect. Maybe people of SE think they are perfect.

… And sweat is icky and dangerous too. :D
It may be interesting to see someone with earwax that gets outside the ears. :)

  40. synn says:

“I am not native English speaking. Forgive me”.

Neither am I. Hence the “honest suggestion” part.

The rest of my comment stands. I’m not gonna reason with you anymore.

  41. tired se supporter says:

    Thank you very much.

  42. Michell says:

I’d appreciate it if you could end it there.

  43. tired se supporter says:

    Go ahead. My friend.
    I just make a joke.

I don’t accept critical comments, how can I make comments to SE. :)

  44. ocean21 says:

I’m still waiting for your review, mate :)

  45. Shino03 says:

Hey,  people could you tell to sony ericsson to put bluetooth headset in the retail package specifically the Noise Cancelling Headphones HPM-88 or the Wireless Stereo Headphones HBH-IS800 to stop this people from babbling because W980 doesn’t have a 3.5 mm jack and that would be definitely better than 3.5 mm jack of nokia, lg, samsung and motorola phones!
    Please! Please! Please!

  46. WBC says:

    - No AF(therefore shitty camera)
    - Small screen(only 2.2″……look at the Japanese DoCoMo and SoftBank phones)
    - No 3.5mm jack(alhtough it is not necessary…)
