UIQ files for bankruptcy

uiq

UIQ’s CEO Johan Sandberg told Reuters in a recent interview that the company has filed for bankruptcy. UIQ was jointly owned by Sony Ericsson and Motorola, and supplied a version of Symbian to some mobile handsets. UIQ’s bankruptcy comes partly as a result of Nokia’s purchase of Symbian, formed the Symbian Foundation and said it would begin producing a royalty-free Symbian platform. CEO Johan Sandber said the owners will not provide any more financial support. He also added that there were no opportunities to create a new line of business in the current financial climate.

Sony Ericsson had said in November that it would continue to fund UIQ while it considered the options for the future of the firm. However, it seems that the handset maker has decided its pointless to continue funding UIQ. UIQ still had 200 employees as of last month.

    R.I.P.  I loved UIQ :-(

I thought the company died a long time ago and everyone was laid off?

    Chris,
Yes, but Sony Ericsson offered financial support, but unfortunately that didn’t succeed, which has resulted in the bankruptcy.

Oh hmm…maybe SE should hire some of them…I think it would be cool to have some UIQ influence on the future touch feature phone platform.

As I understand from current rumors, future Symbian phones from SE will have a UIQ-styled overlay/skin.

I never used UIQ (due to none of the devices being compatible with ‘Merican networks, but it’s always a shame when something like this happens.  Unfortunately, I don’t think UIQ was ever used to its full potential and was kind of run into the ground due to that very reason.

The financial support is not enough if you don’t have a business strategy, and maybe it was that what they failed in.
