Sony Ericssons Announces LiveView™ Bluetooth Accessory

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

If you’ve been seriously disappointed in Sony Ericsson due to the delay in the Eclair Update for its Android range, then Sony Ericsson has just announced an accessory that might just cheer you up.

First things first, it is NOT an Ipod Nano; infact it seems quite similar (once attached to the watch kit) to the OLED bluetooth watchs which Sony Ericsson still produce.

Posted Image

As far as hardware goes, there are two buttons on the top of the screen and 4 soft keys at each end of its 128×128 1.3″ screen. Software wise, the phone only supports Android phones with Sony Ericsson LiveWare™ Manager App installed. No, not your old K850 or your cute pink Vivaz ….

There is one other catch – Android phone compatible (Android OS 2.0 and above) . So it appears we aren’t going to see this in retail shops until the Eclair update rolls out for most of the Android range, which should be around Q4. However, the accessory doesn’t seem to be limited to Sony Ericsson phones only. Oh and by the way, the X10 in the video seems to be running Eclair … :p

Android 2.1 Upgrade Due For Release Next Month (September) …

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010
While most companies are working on developing Android 2.2 (Froyo) updates for their respective phones. Sony Ericsson should have Android 2.1 ready before the end of September according to a tweet made by the SonyEricssonUK twitter account …

Of course, this should be taken with a grain of salt seeing as Sony Ericsson have a reputation for delaying products and firmware updates. Plus, it doesn’t suggest whether all the phones will get the update (by the end of September) or a single phone like the X10. We can only hope that at the end of this long wait, the firmwares are stable ….

X10 Users DO NOT Update To R2BA026 – WiFi Bug returns!

Thursday, July 29th, 2010
Having heard about the latest firmware update available for the SE X10 I jumped onto Sony Ericsson Update Service and started to install this “recommended” update from the masters of firmware disaster! While the update was running I turned and said “I like getting new updates, it can only make things better”…..these were famous last words indeed!

You may remember that back when we had the R1FA016 firmware I was able to pinpoint this rather glaring bug in the X10’s radio setup which caused the phone to turn off the WiFi each and every time the phone dropped to no signal AND again when it reattached to the network. This was a particularly troublesome bug for me living in a poor signal area so I was especially pleased to see SE fix it with the recent R2BA020 firmware. Imagine my disgust, though funnily enough not surprise, then when I begin trying out my freshly installed R2BA026 update and witness the return of of this disastrous radio implementation.

My WiFi is once again useless as it turns itself off and on again constantly as my X10 struggles for signal and will likely have to downgrade back to R2BA020. In stark contrast to SE, I can only recommend that you avoid this update unless you wish to lose functionality.

Well done SE another triumph of wireless engineering, please sack whichever cretinous buffoon(s) that worked on this! Either that or stop tasking your firmware updates to the work experience kids you amateurs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are the previous videos again as they show the exact same symptoms.

More on the upcoming Xperia X8

Saturday, June 19th, 2010
X10 too much for you? X10 mini too small for you? Then pay attention to this- “First (Official) Glimpse” of the upcoming X8 (aka Shakira) fresh from the Sony Ericsson Product Launch blog.

As usual my friend Albin has shot a short video clip showing off his XPERIA X8, comparing it to the X10 products and giving a first glimpse of it.It can be seen as the middle sister to the X10 products size-wise but will as told earlier be somewhat of a baby sister when it comes to price. Something we think will make it very attractive to an even bigger target group. As always remember that these videos are done on prototype hardware and pre-release software so things can of course change until release.Have a great weekend!

Unfortunately the video doesnt say much about the X8 itself except for the fact that it has a full QWERTY touchscreen keyboard like the X10 and the corner shortcuts from the X10 mini. So we turn to Rog’s review from se-first.com….

Our impression
Although the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 looks like being a phone between the Xperia X10 and the x10 mini, it really is meant to be the entry phone to the Xperia line (‘My first Xperia’). However, we definitely think that it is also an absolutely viable option for those who are looking for an Android powered phone that comes in a handy, yet usable form factor and size.
On the negative side one certainly has to consider the low camera resolution with no autofocus option. Another cause for complaint will most probably be the Android version 1.6, which is considered to be outdated for quite some time now already. It is however expected that the complete Xperia line will get an update to a more up to date Android version sometime in Q3 this year.

SE confirms Xperia X10 Android upgrade

Saturday, February 6th, 2010
Putting an end to all the speculation, Sony Ericsson have confirmed that the Xperia X10 will eventually be updated to a newer version of Android at some point of time after its launch. Addressing questions from fans and critics whether the X10’s Android 1.6 OS will prove to be competitive enough in the long run, Sumit Malhotra on the SE Product blog has confirmed that ‘there will be a software update for the X10 that will upgrade the complete Sony Ericsson User Experience Platform based on newer version of the Android OS.’

Hence in all probability, X10 will launch with Android 1.6 which will be updated to a ‘newer Android version’ later. Sony Ericsson has however not specified which version it’ll eventually be updated to.

Vodafone UK To Get Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 In April ‘10

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 – arguably the most hotly anticipated Android handset now that Google’s own Nexus One has landed – is now officially up with an April release date on the Vodafone UK site.

We’ve naturally become pretty intimate with the device over the last few months – it was expected at the end of last year – but the our excitement at the prospect of a Snapdragon-powered, 8-megapixel snapping beast like the XPERIA X10 has not diminished at all.

Smartphone specs like GPS, Wi-Fi and Exchange support are all present and correct, and the 4-inch capacitive touch display is the perfect home for Sony Ericsson’s heavily customised UX interface. We’re still eager to see if there are any elements of Android still peeking out of Time and Mediascape, but the tiles and threaded nature for contacts and messages are very much appealing.

Roll on April!

Sony Ericsson To Spend Big On Making Vivaz And XPERIA X10 A Success

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Today marked the official unveiling of the Sony Ericsson Vivaz, an 8-megapixel camera handset with HD video recording and a tapered design apparently built upon the idea of ‘human curvature’. Brought forward from an April release to roll out alongside the Android-powered XPERIA X10 in March for a dual flagship launch, both handsets are a big deal for Sony Ericsson.

The Vivaz focusses on bringing the best of communication entertainment, with media player and easy access to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Sony Ericsson are reportedly spending in the region of £4 million to increase awareness of the pair in the UK, with a combination of print, TV and billboard advertising on the way to raise their profile in the coming months. The Vivaz will be pushed to the youth as an fun-filled device, whilst the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will be pitched as a connectivity powerhouse, showing off their customised revamp of Google’s Android operating system.

With the Satio and Aino attracting some negative feedback upon their respective launches, these new Sony Erisson phones are sure to mark a change in direction for the manufacturer in 2010.

Xperia X10 Heading To Canada In Q2

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

sonyericsson_x10_preorder_banner_smaller

That infernal twitter nonsense, that everyone but me seems to like, appears to have helped draw attention to something worth looking at. Canadian mobile phone network Rogers have tweeted (what a ridiculous term!) that they are to receive the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 in Q2 of 2010. Thankfully there is also a link to the real part of the internet where there is more information about the phone and launch, though of course we already know all about the phone:

Toronto , January 5, 2010 – Canadians will be among the first in the world to experience open and integrated social media, communication and entertainment with the launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia ™ X10 phone, which will make its North American debut first in Canada , exclusively from Rogers . The Xperia ™ X10 is expected to be available in the second quarter 2010.

“At Rogers , we have built our legacy on innovation, bringing the most exciting and exclusive handsets first to customers in Canada ,” said John Boynton , Executive Vice President, Marketing, Rogers Communications. “We are thrilled to be the exclusive Canadian carrier to offer this phenomenal mobile entertainment device.”

“Building on our entertainment heritage, the Xperia ™ X10 underpins our commitment to an open and multi-platform strategy that maximizes choice for the consumer and delivers the best possible entertainment experience,” said Andrea Gaal, General Manager, Sony Ericsson Canada . “This handset makes communications more fun and more playful while multiplying and enriching opportunities to connect.”

Introducing signature applications like Sony Ericsson Mediascape and Timescape™, the Xperia™ X10 lets consumers organize everything in their phone and in an intuitive way:

• The Sony Ericsson Timescape™ application manages all your communication with one person in one place. Browse through your conversations and check out your Facebook™, Twitter™ and MySpace™ accounts 1 , photos, emails 1 , and texts 1 all in one seamless, easy to use interface

• Sony Ericsson Mediascape application is the smart way to get all the music, photos and videos you want from your favourite friends and artists. It accesses this content from just about everywhere – your phone or YouTube™ and Facebook™ services 1 and presents everything for you in an integrated way

Intelligence capabilities, integrated into Sony Ericsson Mediascape and Timescape™ applications, automatically recognizes connections between contacts, content and media. By recommending alternative ways to communicate or guiding to new media experiences, consumers can discover more in a truly open way. For example:

• Pressing the new “infinite button” guides you through the connected world, aggregating all your interactions with one person into one view

• Intelligent face recognition features recognize up to five faces in any picture, automatically connecting them with your social phonebook and all other related communications with that person. The X10 also features an 8.1 megapixel camera including 16X digital zoom.

The UX platform builds on top of the Open OS (Android) and creates a unique Sony Ericsson user experience by combining best-in-class entertainment features with signature applications, unrivalled integration of social media services and a rich graphical user interface. The Xperia™ X10 phone is the first mobile phone to truly humanize the way people interact with their phones.

Sony Ericsson’s open approach gives consumers maximum choice. Xperia X10 users can download any application they want directly from Android Market, creating an experience that is entirely unique to them.

It may not be much of a surprise that this makes Rogers the first North American carrier to get the X10 but my worry is still over when the X10 will make it to Europe. I would expect a Sony Ericsson device to release in Europe before North America but the claim by Rogers that “Canadians will be among the first in the world” suggests that there won’t be many releases before this and if there are they may not be much earlier. We’re already expecting the X10 to be delayed but Q2, that’s any time from April until June, sounds like bad news to me. With Google preparing to announce the Nexus One in a few minutes and suggestions that it might go on sale immediately, Sony Ericsson may be missing the boat (again) and would do well to take a lesson from Google on how to launch a product!
