Sony Ericsson unveils “Live with Walkman”

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Four months after Mix Walkman, here comes Live. Not really a Walkman related name, but it certainly fits with the look. The newest phone from “Walkman” line, first Android-based phone from SE not Xperia branded, this phone has to be something special. Known specifications so far are: 1GHz processor, 3.2 inch capacitive screen with HVGA resolution unfortunately,  5 megapixel camera with Auto Focus and 8x digital zoom. Biggest surprise is front facing VGA camera capable of capturing 720p HD video! It has 320 MB or RAM, with tri-band 3G connection (HSPA+), or dual-band 3G, depending on model.

Software-side, it has Android Gingerbread, “Deep Facebook” integration (briefly, adds Facebook content to Photos, Phonebook, Calendar and such), Media Discovery, as seen before, that allows you to discover more music by recommendations both based on what you already listen, and what your friends on Facebook suggest. Infinite button within media player allows you to see more information from artists you are currently listening songs from. Simply, just tap the “Infinite” button and have instant access to latest albums, events, and lyrics.  Qriocity music and video content from Sony- only Sony Ericsson Android users have access to this. Millions of songs, thousands of movies, right on your fingertips! Sony’s xLOUD technology, recently integrated into newest Xperia models, enhances sound quality at high levels. And a good old TrackID to find song titles based on recordings from microphone and FM radio.

Sounds promising, but we’ll have to wait for the revelation of price to see will it be success or not.

Sony Ericsson announces the W205

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

w2053

Just when you thought that they couldn’t go cheaper than the W395, Sony Ericsson did it again! The W205, ladies and gentlemen, is the result. A Walkman phone for the preschoolers. T303’s Walkman version, if you will.

It has an amazing 1.8″ TFT screen, supporting 65k colours and with a resolution of 128×160 pixels. So that rules out people with poor eyesight. The phone itself is 16mm thick, which makes it rather chunky. The height and the width compensate for that, being 92×47mm respectively.

w2051

Soo, what makes the W205 so special? Nothing. Well, apart from its relatively small size. It’s got Walkman v2, the dreadful Sagem interface (no themes!), Java games, FM  radio, a 1.3MP camera on its back, allowing up to 2.2x digital zoom and video recording. Bluetooth is also there. Oh, also, unlike the T303, the W205 features a Memory Stick Micro M2 card slot.

In our opinion, this phone is awfully redundant. By the time of its release there will be much better last-gen phones selling for the same price (most probably). One could always buy it as a backup phone, I guess, or for their child. The expected release will be somewhere in Q2 this year, when the phone will ship in Ambient Black.

Also announced today is the MS410 Snap-on speaker. It supports all Walkman phones.

W995 promotional video

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Hardly the best promotional video I’ve ever seen, but it’s OK. It matches the preloaded content on the W995 pretty well, especially with the differently shaped cartoon-like characters. We’ll publish the preloaded content of the W995 later.

Just 7 hours away before the Sony Ericsson MWC Conference, I decided to post something else to help you guys pass some time away. Sony Ericsson has released the commercial campaign for the Premier3, the entertainment flagship of Japanese operator AU by KDDI.

Sony Ericsson pushes out W395 Walkman slider

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

w395

w395_2In a rather surprising move, Sony Ericsson announced today the low-end W395 Walkman phone. As you can see, it has a slider form factor with a rather glossy housing and is equipped with a 2.0″ 176×220 scratch-resistant screen, supporting up to 262k colours. The Walkman boasts a 2-megapixel non-AF snapper on its back, which is adequate for an “affordable” phone. Did I mention Photo fix? Now that’s a first for a phone of its class, I believe.
The music side of the phone features the familiar Walkman 2.0 player with a customizable equalizer, the MegaBass equalizer preset, album art and stereo widening (and stereo speakers to boot!). It also has Sony Ericsson’s well-known TrackID music recognition service, which lets you identify the title, album and artist of a song just by recording a small clip of it.

- Sony Ericsson takes pride in understanding the youth market, and the W395 is a mobile phone that caters to all their needs with great music quality, says Alexandre Cardon, who’s the Global product marketing manager for music at Sony Ericsson in a press release.
- Our most affordable Walkman slider phone to date allows users to share music with friends as well as video clips and photos for the ultimate entertainment experience, he continues.

There’s FM radio with RDS and Bluetooth with A2DP on-board as well. The most interesting feature is perhaps the built-in stereo speakers “with high quality bass” - I don’t know about you guys, but that kind of surprised me. The W395 ships bundled with the HPM-64 stereo headset and with a 1GB M2 memory card.
Another interesting thing about this phone is that it also features and accelerometer, which means that you can play motion-controlled games on it, much like the gaming F305, the former being basically a Walkman version of the latter.

It measures 96 x 47 x 14.9 millimetres and weighs 96 grams – that’s almost exactly the same as the F305. Its battery is good for 8 hours of talk or up to 480 hours of standby life – that’s actually quite impressive! Music listening time is set to only 12½ hours though, which is hardly ground-breaking.

w395_1

So, the W395 will be available in “selected markets” in 2 colours – Dusky Grey and Blush Titanium from the first quarter of the year.
If, you ask me, this addition to SE’s portfolio seems a bit redundant, but I guess that design does look rather well and that it’ll be mostly popular among the youngsters.

We’ve got live pictures of the W395 in cooperation with SE-community after the break! :)

Here’s the new Walkman flagship – Hikaru

Monday, February 9th, 2009

hikaru

Here’s a semi-bad mock-up of ‘Hikaru’ – Sony Ericsson’s new Walkman flagship phone. I’m afraid we cannot tell you what’s wrong with the picture, but we promise it’s nothing too serious.

According to the poster, the Hikaru will feature 8 gigs of storage, an 8 megapixel camera with auto focus, 3.5 mm audio jack built-in, stereo speakers, music keys on the right side, etc. It’ll feature the Walkman v4 player and a large 2.6 inch display.

I personally think its other colour variant looks better than the black one, but I guess it’s all about personal taste :)

Hikaru is rumoured to be announced on Sunday at Sony Ericsson’s press conference in Barcelona. I’m really pumped about Hikaru, and I think everyone ought to be! :)

Sony Ericsson’s Premier3 Walkman

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

On January 29, AU by KDDI, the second largest operator in Japan, announced its’ new spring collection of phones.  Two of the nine phones are from Sony Ericsson, namely the Premier3 Walkman and S001 Cybershot.

Premier3 Walkman

Leading the entertainment lineup of AU’s Spring Collection is Sony Ericsson’s Premier3 Walkman.  This phone is the second phone to feature Premium Player, an exclusive Walkman Music Player for Sony Ericsson Japan.  Premium Player works with the Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), delivering ClearStereo and ClearBass through the headphones and speakers.  Although it is not exactly clear what the “3″ stands for, one can assume that the phone has 3 different styles, “Music Style” “Keitai Style”, and “Theater Style.” (more…)

W395 aka ‘Yao’ is F305’s artistic sister?

Monday, January 19th, 2009

w395_yao

It seems Sony Ericsson will soon announce the F305’s Walkman sister. Today, Maximys over at SEMC Blog posted that this phone is going to be called W395, and that it’ll be announced relatively soon in order to be released in April later this year. The specifications are rumoured to be about the same as F305, although with the slight addition of the Walkman player, and probably a few music applications and extras, such as a large memory card.

The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is just around the corner, which will present an excellent opportunity to announce the W395. I guess we’ll see soon! :) By the way, the picture is not real – it’s made in Photoshop.

Here’s the W508 presentation video

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Quite a cool presentation video if you ask me. It really shows the many looks and styles of the W508. What do you think?

You’ll find the video after the break. It starts on its own. (more…)

Sony Ericsson announces W705’s Voda twin – the W715

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

w715-banner1

In addition to the W508 and the C510, Sony Ericsson also announced today a Vodafone version of the W705 and confusingly named it W715. The phone’s got everything its twin already features, but with a few extras as well. Like the W705, it features a 3.2MP camera with an LED flash, Wi-Fi, Clear Audio Experience and Clear Bass (a la W980 and W902), a YouTube player, Shake control and SensMe. It also has a relatively large 2.4″ screen and a  metallic body.

What’s different, though is that it also has a GPS module (like the G705, the non-walkman version of the W705), which can be used with Vodafone’s Find&Go service, which enables users to find “their nearest restaurants, hotels or shopping centres all within a few clicks on their new mobile phone”. There’s also the standard package of navigation software that comes with every aGPS-equipped SE phone. Some people should also be happy to know that the W715 now comes with an 8GB M2 card, unlike the 4GB one that ships with the W705.
There’ll also be a new colour – Galactic Black (pictured), in addition to the Luxury Silver one we’ve come to know from the W705.

Again, I remind you that this is a Vodafone-branded handset. Despite that, there is a possibility that there will be a non-branded version coming out in the Nordic countries.
