X10 too much for you? X10 mini too small for you? Then pay attention to this- “First (Official) Glimpse” of the upcoming X8 (aka Shakira) fresh from the Sony Ericsson Product Launch blog.

As usual my friend Albin has shot a short video clip showing off his XPERIA X8, comparing it to the X10 products and giving a first glimpse of it.It can be seen as the middle sister to the X10 products size-wise but will as told earlier be somewhat of a baby sister when it comes to price. Something we think will make it very attractive to an even bigger target group. As always remember that these videos are done on prototype hardware and pre-release software so things can of course change until release.Have a great weekend!

Unfortunately the video doesnt say much about the X8 itself except for the fact that it has a full QWERTY touchscreen keyboard like the X10 and the corner shortcuts from the X10 mini. So we turn to Rog’s review from se-first.com….

Our impression
Although the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 looks like being a phone between the Xperia X10 and the x10 mini, it really is meant to be the entry phone to the Xperia line (‘My first Xperia’). However, we definitely think that it is also an absolutely viable option for those who are looking for an Android powered phone that comes in a handy, yet usable form factor and size.
On the negative side one certainly has to consider the low camera resolution with no autofocus option. Another cause for complaint will most probably be the Android version 1.6, which is considered to be outdated for quite some time now already. It is however expected that the complete Xperia line will get an update to a more up to date Android version sometime in Q3 this year.

Our good friend rog has posted a huge preview of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 over at se-first.com.

The preview offers videos of Timescape, Mediascape, e-mail client, browser, messaging and camera application in action as well as a plethora of live images!

Here’s a snippet of the article:

Let’s start with some facts and figures. The X10 sports (among a lot of others) the following main-features:
Android 1.6 (Donut)
WVGA screen (480 x 854)
Scratch resistant, 4 inches, capacitive TFT touchsreen
Size: 119 x 63 x 13 mm, 135 grams
1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 processor
Sony Ericsson Timescape™ & Mediascape™ User Interface2
HSPA
8 Megapixel camera with touchfocus, multipoint-focus, automatic scene detection, smile detection
WVGA video recording
Face recognition on pictures
aGPS
Exchange ActiveSync
3.5mm headset jack, miniUSB connector
1500mAh battery

……….

Let’s get into details a bit more, our first video gives you some impressions of the Xperia X10’s look, which hopefully gives you some better feeling of the Android device (for best quality, watch it in HD!):

……….

Next thing: let’s have a look at the newly introduced concept of Timescape™ and Mediascape™, which basically represents Sony Ericsson’s customization of the Android UI.

……….

What can we say about XPERIA X10 at the current stage? Well… It is definitely fun to use, the huge screen displays every content in a brilliant way, the capacitive screen is responsive, and once the firmware gets into a more final state, the phone for sure will also be more fluent in the usage. A glimps on the power that is hidden under the hood is very noticable already now in the browser, which is ultra-fast.

Sony Ericsson’s approach of including a wide area of social networks and tearing down the borders between those services in such a forceful way is certainly something new in the mobile phone area. A little doubt remains though: will the average (and even the above-average) user really make complete use of all the features that the X10 offers?

The preview is excellent and the phone is looking great, probably the most responsive we’ve seen it performing so far. So head on over to se-first.com to read the full article as well as another two videos and of course loads of live photos.

Cheers rog!

Today we received the new Sony Ericsson C905. It comes in a pretty standard piano black box with “8.1 megapixel” printed on it. It’s pretty obvious that Sony Ericsson wants to compete against its competitors with what is technically speaking a false statement, but let’s not go into details about that now.

When you get the C905 in your hand for the very first time, you get a feel of quality. The rubberized backside feels exquisite, and the sliding mechanism really is top notch. Fortunately, some might add, as it would have been an utter disaster had it not been.

Our review unit is the black version of the C905. It looks classy, and there’s not really a lot to come for on a visual point of perspective. The handset is roughly the same size as most other Sony Ericsson phones, albeit it feels a bit thicker and a tad heavier as well. In our opinion though, the weight plays an unimportant factor as it adds to the quality feel of the handset. One gripe with the design of the phone however, would be the lanyard eyelet near the bottom of the phone. It protrudes a few millimetres from the rest of the body, and although it hardly sounds like an issue, I expect it to be an annoyance factor.

The 2.4-inch TFT display looks very nice. It is bright and vibrant, yet it manages to sport a better contrast than most others. It still isn’t quite up to levels with the contrast levels of the K850, which in our opinion features one of the undoubtedly best displays on the market.

The user interface is really quite fast and it’s incredibly easy to learn as well, as one might have expected. Icons are large and intuitive, and the tiny animations throughout the interface makes it that much more fun to use.

There’s no doubt the camera is the main selling point of this phone. The C905 features an entirely new camera sensor, that, along with new software algorithms, produces pictures of noticeably higher quality than what we’ve seen so far. The camera resolution is at eight megapixels, and the C905 features auto focus along with a variety of other camera-related features, including a xenon flash, SmartContrast and face-tracking.

Going through the menus in the Cyber-shot camera interface has been much improved compared to what previous members of this photographic family had to offer. It’s now a lot quicker and without the annoying lag that happened all too often.

When it comes to picture quality, colours, noise levels, etc., the C905 is rather impressive. Given the right circumstances, you can actually end up with pictures of very high quality and detail, as well as excellent colours. The xenon flash is quite powerful as well, and we’ve got to give Sony Ericsson props for improving the camera software so the flash can now also be used for macro shots without causing too much over-exposure. Night pictures and pictures in poor lighting conditions have also gotten a positive overhaul.

Here are a few camera samples for now, but expect a lot more in our full review that will be published early next month (that’s our target, anyway).

The C905 is Sony Ericsson’s first feature phone to sport built-in WLAN functionality, and our initial thoughts on it are positive. It’s a lot faster than anything else we’ve seen from Sony Ericsson, and it seems awfully easy to set up and use. We have yet to test out just how good it is at picking up signals, though.

A GPS unit is also built-in, but we haven’t had a chance to try this out yet. Media is excellent on the C905, and the built-in speaker is really loud. Definitely among the loudest from Sony Ericsson to date.

Based on our first impressions, we’re quite pleased with the C905. You can look forward to our upcoming gallery of the C905 as well as unboxing video and video preview. All of this will come relatively soon (partly depending on the weather). We also plan on doing an in-depth camera comparison between the C902, C905 and a middle class Nikon digital SLR camera. Watch out for that one!
