Sony Ericsson’s appoints new Chief Technology Officer – Jan Uddenfeldt

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010
Looks like theres a major change in the management of the Sony Ericsson team with the move of Jan Uddenfeldt from the position of Advisor to the CEO and Senior Vice-President to the position of Chief Technology Officer. For the majority of you who dont quite know what a CTO is, heres a quote from wikipedia-
A Chief Technical Officer or more commonly Chief Technology Officer (abbreviated as CTO), is an executive-level position in a company or other entity whose occupant is focused on scientific and technological issues within an organization. It typically involves overseeing Research and Development (R&D) activities, and formulating long-term visions and strategies at the officer level. Essentially, a CTO is responsible for the transformation of capital – be it monetary, intellectual, or political – into technology in furtherance of the company’s objectives. They must typically combine a strong technical or scientific background with business development skills.

Bert Nortberg (President of Sony Ericsson) also commented on this announcement saying-

“I am very pleased today to announce the appointment of Jan Uddenfeldt to our management team as our new CTO and Head of Sony Ericsson Silicon Valley. Jan is deeply rooted in the telecommunications industry, and he will bring a wealth of experience and insight to Sony Ericsson. Over the years he has gained a deep understanding of our industry’s leading technologies, as well as our key operator customers around the world.”

We can only hope for better phones from Sony Ericsson now, judging by the new position he holds in the company and his experience. What do you think about this move? Discuss it in our forums and let us know what you think.

Yes, the 1GHz Snapdragon is there but the rumored 32GB ROM is only 1GB with an 8GB microSD, though that’s enough for me.

Interestingly the Android version is listed as 1.6 though I’m sure the 2.0 upgrade will be there as soon as it can be. There seems to be plenty of SE customisation too with things like SE Mediascape and Timescape™ as well as the custom UI we’ve already seen so much of. Notice also that the Press Release starts off by saying this is the flagship of a family of phones coming in 2010! Can’t wait to see SE’s other Android babies!

Here’s a couple of videos from SE for you to enjoy:

So start saving, you know you want one! And meanwhile check out the shiny new Product Page

Sony Ericsson announces the W205

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

w2053

Just when you thought that they couldn’t go cheaper than the W395, Sony Ericsson did it again! The W205, ladies and gentlemen, is the result. A Walkman phone for the preschoolers. T303’s Walkman version, if you will.

It has an amazing 1.8″ TFT screen, supporting 65k colours and with a resolution of 128×160 pixels. So that rules out people with poor eyesight. The phone itself is 16mm thick, which makes it rather chunky. The height and the width compensate for that, being 92×47mm respectively.

w2051

Soo, what makes the W205 so special? Nothing. Well, apart from its relatively small size. It’s got Walkman v2, the dreadful Sagem interface (no themes!), Java games, FM  radio, a 1.3MP camera on its back, allowing up to 2.2x digital zoom and video recording. Bluetooth is also there. Oh, also, unlike the T303, the W205 features a Memory Stick Micro M2 card slot.

In our opinion, this phone is awfully redundant. By the time of its release there will be much better last-gen phones selling for the same price (most probably). One could always buy it as a backup phone, I guess, or for their child. The expected release will be somewhere in Q2 this year, when the phone will ship in Ambient Black.

Also announced today is the MS410 Snap-on speaker. It supports all Walkman phones.

The T707 has been announced

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

t707_3

… hardly anything interesting though. It’s a pretty standard clamshell phone with a female design. The T707 was designed alongside with Sony Ericsson’s brand ambassador, Maria Sharapova (go figure). The special features, so to speak, of this phone are the ‘eye-catching light effects’, changing themes, and gesture control.

t707_1

Other than that, it’s a pretty standard A2 feature phone. It features a 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, PlayNow, YouTube, Media, Google Maps, geo-tagging, a 2.2-inch TFT display, quad-band GSM/EDGE and single-band UMTS/HSDPA (tri-band for the T707a).

It will be available in three colours – Mysterious Black, Spring Rose and Lucid Blue (what happened to the rest??). It weighs 95 grams and measures 93 x 50 x 14.1 millimetres. The battery is good for 400 hours of standby life or up to 10 hours of talk time.

Sony Ericsson announces W995 multimedia powerhouse

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

w995_blogsense-net

Many of you probably know the phone by its codename – namely Hikaru. The W995 is a perfect example of how Sony Ericsson is aiming to combine Cyber-shot and Walkman features in its high-end handsets. It is also Sony Ericsson’s first phone to be under the umbrella of the newly-announced ‘Entertainment Unlimited’ – more about this right over here. So what’s this all about, you ask? Well, for starters, unlike any other Walkman phone, this slider phone features an auto focus and photo flash-equipped 8 megapixel camera with up to 16x digital zoom. The camera software enables the use of an image and video stabiliser, face detection, picture and video blogging. Yep, that’s face detection on a Walkman – neat, huh?

Speaking of Walkman, the W995 features the Walkman music player - most likely version numero quatro, totally new and totally awesome! Just like the preceding version, it is able to display album art, has an equalizer, which can be adjusted manually or according to several presets, the award-winning Clear Stereo and Clear Bass audio enhancement technologies, Shake Control to switch songs and control the volume, and SensMe, which allows you to pick tracks according to their “mood coordinates”. On the hardware side the phone features Bluetooth with A2DP, which can be used for audio streaming, a pair of powerful stereo speakers and – read carefully – a 3.5 mm audio jack – a first for the Walkman series and feature phones (not counting the J132, which can be dubbed a cheapo phone and not a feature phone). The W995 also has the familiar and totally brilliant TrackID music recognition service, which can provide the user with the title, album and artist of a song in exchange for a small recorded clip of the respective song.

- “The W995 Walkman phone brings together the very best music experiences of any phone, augments this with best in class video and sharing capabilities to offer the most complete communication entertainment package to date,” said Alexandre Cardon, Global Marketing Business Manager at Sony Ericsson in a press release.

- “This powerful mobile phone delivers the best possible video resolution that can fit in your pocket and with enough battery stamina to watch two full length feature films. The W995 also comes complete with the award winning clear audio experience and an 8.1 megapixel camera for the highest quality picture and sound available in a mobile phone.”

There’s also a built-in YouTube player in the Media menu for streaming videos off the popular video sharing site. Just set the phone on its built-in stand and watch the videos in full screen and with sound from the stereo speakers on the back.

An accelerometer is also included in the phone, which enables menu and browser rotation, in addition to motion gaming and the use of the WalkMate application.

w995_blogsensenet2

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the W995 also features Wi-Fi connectivity with DLNA for tapping into home or public networks and making use of the (most of the time) freely available bandwidth. The handset is also equipped with a-GPS unit for location services (Wayfinder and Google Maps included on the phone) and photo geo-tagging – a feature that tags every photo with the global coordinates of the place where it was taken. And then there’s also the obligatory FM receiver with RDS. Unfortunately, there is no FM transmitter this time. Other features include chat view messaging, a very nice Facebook application and a Flickr application. The W995 also comes with a rather cool application that can change the sound of your voice.

The handset will come with an 8 gigabyte Memory Stick Micro M2 card in-box and a pair of HPM-77 headphones. These will be replaced by the noise-cancelling HPM-88 headphones in selected regions.

There’ll also be a new media syncing software coming with the phone in place of the Media Manager software – this is called MediaGo. According to the press release, the program “lets you effortlessly and automatically transfer any audio, photos and videos between your phone and computer. You can even find podcasts with exciting content easily from the directory”. That is basically what the Media Manager software used to do, but there’s more to it. MediaGo will automatically synchronize your media with your computer to keep the phone updated. Also, it’ll automatically convert video files to give you the best quality playback on the phone:

- “With Media Go there’s no need to worry about format, resolution and ‘frame per second’ anymore.” said Alexandre Cardon.

- “No longer will the video you transferred from your PC to your phone play in low resolution or bad quality. With Media Go and the W995 the experience is as good on your phone as it was on your PC,” he continued.

w995_final_blogsensenet1

What’s more about the W995 is that it features a bright and clear scratch-resistant 2.6-inch TFT display, capable of showing up to 262,144 colours and the resolution being QVGA – QVGA means 240 x 320 pixels, which is quite reasonable for a display of its size. The phone itself measures 97 x 49 x 15 millimetres and weighs a good 113 grams – a fair size and weight for a phone with features of its kind.

The W995 supports quad-band GSM networks (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) as well as dual-band UMTS/HSPA networks (tri-band in the W995a variant for the US). The battery is good for up to 370 / 360 hours of standby (2G / 3G networks) and up to 9 / 4 hours of talk (2G / 3G networks) on a charge. You could also decided to go music crazy, and listen to music for a full twenty hours in a row or watch videos in up to five hours per charge, if that’s what yo prefer.

The phone will ship during Q2 this year in the colours Cosmic Silver, Energetic Red, and Progressive Black.

Personally, I think that this is a fantastic addition to Sony Ericsson’s portfolio. An 8 megapixel camera, Clear Audio experience, a 2.6-inch screen and Wi-Fi in one package makes this phone truly awesome. Here’s to hoping it won’t be overpriced.

Sony Ericsson launches Entertainment Unlimited

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

entertainment-unlimited

Sony Ericsson today launched ‘Entertainment Unlimited’, and it is probably one of the biggest and most important announcements yet. Sony Ericsson calls it the pinnacle of what they have been working towards since the beginning of the joint venture back in 2001.

Entertainment Unlimited is all about bringing together content, applications and entertainment experiences. The new consumer proposition is based around three new key promises.

The first is all about uniting the best of all worlds into one offering. This could be uniting the Walkman music experience with the Cyber-shot imaging experience, and perhaps even add a bit of gaming on top. The W995, which was also announced today, is a clear example of that.

The second is about integrating the mobile phone into other devices in your home to seamlessly share content between devices, such as a TV, PC or your HiFi audio system.

The third is also about sharing content, but this time through online web applications and Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow offering.

- “Entertainment Unlimited lets us reinforce our position as THE communication entertainment brand,” said Lennard Hoornik Head of Global Marketing and Vice President at Sony Ericsson in a press release.

- “Everything that we have done to date has brought us to this point – we created the music phone category in 2005 selling over 100 million Walkman phones and we are now ready to unveil the next chapter in the evolution of the company – Entertainment Unlimited – giving consumers unlimited opportunities to share their entertainment experiences,” he continued.

Also commenting on the launch of Entertainment Unlimited is none other than Sony Ericsson’s President, Hideki ‘Dick’ Komiyama:

- “Entertainment Unlimited is at the core of Sony Ericsson’s philosophy, building on the strength of our great entertainment assets such as Walkman and Cyber-shot phones and our unique service and applications integration. Many of the strategic initiatives we’ve announced in the past year have laid the internal framework to launch this new consumer proposition to the market and Sony Ericsson is now ready to drive the next wave of market development with Entertainment Unlimited,” he said in a press release.

Sony Ericsson also showcased a new mobile phone under the concept name Idou today. This is supposed to give us a glimpse of what Sony Ericsson has in store for us, and it is one of a number of projects that will be launched this year under the umbrella of Entertainment Unlimited.

You can read a lot more about Idou here!

Sony Ericsson announces W705’s Voda twin – the W715

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

w715-banner1

In addition to the W508 and the C510, Sony Ericsson also announced today a Vodafone version of the W705 and confusingly named it W715. The phone’s got everything its twin already features, but with a few extras as well. Like the W705, it features a 3.2MP camera with an LED flash, Wi-Fi, Clear Audio Experience and Clear Bass (a la W980 and W902), a YouTube player, Shake control and SensMe. It also has a relatively large 2.4″ screen and a  metallic body.

What’s different, though is that it also has a GPS module (like the G705, the non-walkman version of the W705), which can be used with Vodafone’s Find&Go service, which enables users to find “their nearest restaurants, hotels or shopping centres all within a few clicks on their new mobile phone”. There’s also the standard package of navigation software that comes with every aGPS-equipped SE phone. Some people should also be happy to know that the W715 now comes with an 8GB M2 card, unlike the 4GB one that ships with the W705.
There’ll also be a new colour – Galactic Black (pictured), in addition to the Luxury Silver one we’ve come to know from the W705.

Again, I remind you that this is a Vodafone-branded handset. Despite that, there is a possibility that there will be a non-branded version coming out in the Nordic countries.

Sony Ericsson announces the W508: Small, sleek & sexy

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

w5082

Today Sony Ericsson announces the successor of W380 – the W508. Similar to its predecessor, the phone’s exterior features 3 buttons which control the music playback and one OLED display, hidden underneath the glossy top part. Unlike the W380 though, it comes in a much sleeker, yet less extravagant body.

- “The W508 Walkman phone builds on our iconic Walkman range and the successful W380,” said Alexandre Cardon, Global Product Marketing Manager for Music at Sony Ericsson, and continues: “For those who like to express their style and individuality through their mobile phone we’ve brought our creative design team in to design stylish changeable covers so that W508 offers a truly interactive and individual experience.”

w508_5332

As a midrange Walkman phone, the W508 runs on the A2 platform and thus features SensMe and Shake Control (now with light effects!) in its Music player menu. TrackID is there as well, now also boasting text search. The phone comes with a 1GB M2 memory card. Some people will be delighted to know that it also comes with 1 additional Style-Up cover, which can be swapped with the phone’s generic one at any time. They’re quite well designed, too. (more…)
