Sony: “You can’t use the PlayStation brand”

Mobile Today reports that Sony Ericsson’s plans of creating a PlayStation-branded phone have been crushed by Sony, who has refused Sony Ericsson the brand.

According to sources of Mobile Today, the refusal has prompted a fall out between Sony and the joint venture (Sony Ericsson). Sources have also said that Sony would only license the PlayStation brand if and when Sony makes handsets independently. A Sony Ericsson spokeswoman told Mobile Today, that the company could not comment on what Sony has or had not said, but added that “in the past, we have been keen that our product proposition lives up to brand promise, and we feel at the moment the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone”.

Ah well… I don’t personally care too much, as I’ve got a feeling they’ve got something up their sleeves. And besides, I’d rather have a Bravia-branded handset, like in Japan, than a PlayStation-branded one.

And yes, I’m fully aware of the fact that this is slightly old news, but I’ve got a lot of things going on at the moment, and thought we’d all be better off to have this covered.

I agree.  Sony’s right.  What could they do with such a prestigious brand on their phones ? They’re working on too many platforms at the same time ?  It would be a nightmare for developers. Playstation on Windows Mobile ? Playstation on Symbian ? Playstation on A2 ? Playstation on Android ?

The time has come to make a choice of OS for the future of the company.   They seem to be unable to react quickly to attacks from HTC, Nokia, RIM and Palm   As a journalist I don’t understand their OS strategy…. Let’s hope that Barcelona will bring us good surprises…  :-)

No surprise Sony didn’t like they have the Playsation brand…why?

Because SE doesn’t have the technology or the finances to build a good gaming phone.

Sticking PS branding a SE F305 handset isn’t going to fool anyone.  The sooner Sony cuts ties with Ericsson the better.
