On January 29, AU by KDDI, the second largest operator in Japan, announced its’ new spring collection of phones. Two of the nine phones are from Sony Ericsson, namely the Premier3 Walkman and S001 Cybershot.

S001 Cybershot
Sony Ericsson announces the S001 Cybershot, the only nonflip Japanese Keitai for the AU by KDDI’s Spring Collection. The S001 features a 8.1 megapixel CMOS camera with PhotoFlash and an Exmor sensor technology similar to that used in Sony’s DSLR cameras α900 & α700. Exmor CMOS sensors produce fast, quality photos by improving image processing and reducing noise.

The S001 shares similar styling from Sony Ericsson’s C905 and even the X1. The front of the phone has a gigantic 3.3″ FWVGA OLED BRAVIA display.

Sliding the phone up is a standard alphanumeric keypad. Like all other AU keitais, the S001 can use the network operator’s services like AUSports, LISMO Media, and EZ FelCia for electronic payments. On the right side, there is the volume rocker, camera shutter key, as well as a gallery shortcut key.

The 8.1 megapixel camera can be activated by sliding the camera cover. The entire camera starts up instantly (see youtube video below). The cybershot user interface found on the S001 is similar to the W61s and SO905iCS. There are many useful camera features:
- iSCN – 8 different scene modes (Night Portrait, Night, Daylight Portrait, Daylight, Portrait, Landscape, Macro, and Text) that automatically adjusts shutter speeds and exposure levels to produce quality images.
- Smile Shutter – captures a picture when a smile is detected (from “smile metre”)
- Face Detection – detects and focuses on up to three faces and categorizes the picture to “kids”, “person”, and “smile”
- ISO1600
- PhotoFlash
- BestPic
- PhotoFix
- StickiPics – Japanese sticker picture frames

The Preview Gallery found in the S001 is quite similar to the ones in Cybershot cameras. One has the ability to view only selected photos depending on the selected photo category: “kids”, “person”, “face”, and “no face.” Also like Cybershot cameras, there is Scrapbook Mode in the phone!

The S001 has GPS and will automatically add GPS coordinates to the photos.
The phone is available in 3 colours, OlivexGold, Pink, and Black. Like the Premier3, the S001 does have Global Passport CDMA/GSM, which means it could be used around the world. But for everyone outside of Japan, it is currently not possible to use AU phones properly (only for calls and media).
Someone in Japan managed to get their hands on the device and posted up a quick video on YouTube. View it in High Quality.
