Sony Ericsson’s S001 Cybershot
On January 29, AU by KDDI, the second largest operator in Japan, announced its’ new spring collection of phones. Two of the nine phones are from Sony Ericsson, namely the Premier3 Walkman and S001 Cybershot.

S001 Cybershot
Sony Ericsson announces the S001 Cybershot, the only nonflip Japanese Keitai for the AU by KDDI’s Spring Collection. The S001 features a 8.1 megapixel CMOS camera with PhotoFlash and an Exmor sensor technology similar to that used in Sony’s DSLR cameras α900 & α700. Exmor CMOS sensors produce fast, quality photos by improving image processing and reducing noise.

The S001 shares similar styling from Sony Ericsson’s C905 and even the X1. The front of the phone has a gigantic 3.3″ FWVGA OLED BRAVIA display.

Sliding the phone up is a standard alphanumeric keypad. Like all other AU keitais, the S001 can use the network operator’s services like AUSports, LISMO Media, and EZ FelCia for electronic payments. On the right side, there is the volume rocker, camera shutter key, as well as a gallery shortcut key.

The 8.1 megapixel camera can be activated by sliding the camera cover. The entire camera starts up instantly (see youtube video below). The cybershot user interface found on the S001 is similar to the W61s and SO905iCS. There are many useful camera features:
- iSCN - 8 different scene modes (Night Portrait, Night, Daylight Portrait, Daylight, Portrait, Landscape, Macro, and Text) that automatically adjusts shutter speeds and exposure levels to produce quality images.
- Smile Shutter - captures a picture when a smile is detected (from “smile metre”)
- Face Detection - detects and focuses on up to three faces and categorizes the picture to “kids”, “person”, and “smile”
- ISO1600
- PhotoFlash
- BestPic
- PhotoFix
- StickiPics - Japanese sticker picture frames

The Preview Gallery found in the S001 is quite similar to the ones in Cybershot cameras. One has the ability to view only selected photos depending on the selected photo category: “kids”, “person”, “face”, and “no face.” Also like Cybershot cameras, there is Scrapbook Mode in the phone!

The S001 has GPS and will automatically add GPS coordinates to the photos.
The phone is available in 3 colours, OlivexGold, Pink, and Black. Like the Premier3, the S001 does have Global Passport CDMA/GSM, which means it could be used around the world. But for everyone outside of Japan, it is currently not possible to use AU phones properly (only for calls and media).
Someone in Japan managed to get their hands on the device and posted up a quick video on YouTube. View it in High Quality.

*drools*
does it works outside japan. ie can be used in indian GSM n/w’s then does it has wifi and bluetooth mp3 ringtones?
Well done, dude.
You’ve post the news.
Good SE Japan.
Hope we’ll see those features in the coming GSM models.
Japan sets….. ><
idumbakumar, if you read the entire post, you won’t have to ask your first question.
WiFi - No, it’s not needed in Japan when you have 100% 3G coverage
Bluetooth - Yes
MP3 Ringtones - None of the Japanese phones support MP3s except Sony Ericsson, but I’m not sure if this is the case for AU phones. Most likely not…
“… and the same Exmor sensor used in Sony’s DSLR cameras α900 & α700″
oh dear!
1. APS-C or full-frame 35mm sensor in mobile phone
2. Exmor technology

Well, I think its the first one…..
The second, of course….
hello all.Great job by SE.
but unfortunately SE lose the competition to samsung.I`m SE fan but if u compere C905 pic with innov8 there is a noticeable difference between them.
So what`s up with SE who used to be a leader of camera phone?
why they can`t offer good camera phone even with VGA video rec.
if i`m not right, please correct me.
Soo1 Whitout Xenon….
This phone is dead, and a bit of SE.s goodwill to……….
I wonder why SE Japan dont just produce their phones worldwide , imagine this phone to be used anywhere ! that would be AWESOME
Have you used their interface? You wouldn’t want to. They’re all glitter and features on the outside, but on the inside - bleh! That counts for all Jap phones, BTW.
The user interface in this phone isn’t bad actually… (i haven’t used it personally myself, but comparing videos with this and the DoCoMo phones, this is way better).
Hamed1297… I’m not so sure about that… especially if you are talking about Japanese phones. Samsung is dead in Japan. They can’t keep up with the Japanese mobile market. Nokia dropped out of the mobile race in Japan because they couldn’t keep up.
With regards to Xenon, I’m not sure if it is a Japanese policy or anything, but it seems that no Japanese phone actually has xenon in it.

No,i just talk in general.i know that SE phone for japan are great.
but the usual product that we can see every where ,especially camera phone are loosing the competition.i mean they didn`t improve as much as they should.so the other brand come near and some go ahead.
sorry for my bad English.
I Really like this design! Pretty cool
too bad it is not available here though…
Wow! that looks amazing i want one
They actually have the nerve to merge X1 and C905’s design cues into one phone. Plus that FWVGA screen. One real looker this phone is.

Is there no way to import this to the states and have the data connection work for internet features?
