HelpOn January 29, AU by KDDI, the second largest operator in Japan, announced its’ new spring collection of phones. Two of the nine phones are from Sony Ericsson, namely the Premier3 Walkman and S001 Cybershot.
Premier3 Walkman
Leading the entertainment lineup of AU’s Spring Collection is Sony Ericsson’s Premier3 Walkman. This phone is the second phone to feature Premium Player, an exclusive Walkman Music Player for Sony Ericsson Japan. Premium Player works with the Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), delivering ClearStereo and ClearBass through the headphones and speakers. Although it is not exactly clear what the “3″ stands for, one can assume that the phone has 3 different styles, “Music Style” “Keitai Style”, and “Theater Style.”
Music Style is the phone in closed position. As shown in the above picture, the Premier3 features an external hidden OLED screen that is capable of displaying times and notifications as well as Now Playing information, with the track and artist name. A Walkman logo is located on the left of the external screen, which glows and changes colour depending on the music playing. To the bottom of the hidden OLED screen is a hidden LED light, serving as a notfication light.
Keitai Style is the phone opened vertically. Keitai, meaning Japanese handset, are usually flip phones. A 3.0″ FWVGA TFT BRAVIA display dominates the first half while a standard Japanese alphanumeric keypad and navigation cluster is found in the second half. Volume controls as well as many shortcut keys are located to the right side of the phone, while a data port (not a FastPort) is found on the left. The data port is used for charging, transferring data, and for the optional docking accessory. A 3.5mm jack is not on the device, but one inserts their headphoens using the included bluetooth accessory. Using Premium Player and this bluetooth accessory, one can rip songs directly via the 3.5mm jack.
Theater Style is the phone flipped in landscape position, which is done all thanks to the unique side hinge design. By flipping the phone this way, it activates Media Launcher, which is similar to the Media Gallery found in most Sony Ericsson phones today. The Media Launcher allows one to watch movies on the MicroSD Card, 1-Seg Mobile Television, the Premium Player, LISMO Media, Picture Gallery, and Camera.
On the back, there is a large speaker grill, a 3.2 megapixel CMOS camera with autofocus LED flash, a 770 mHa battery, a Felcia sensor, and a infrared port.
Relating back to the “3″, this phone is offerend in 3 colours: Sparkling Gold, Passionate Pink, and Noble Black. The Premier3 does have Global Passport CDMA/GSM passport capabilities which means it could be used around the world. But for everyone outside of Japan, it is currently not possible to use AU phones properly (only for calls and media).
