Sony Ericsson: “Neither plan to walk away”

We’ve published numerous posts with rumours of a possible split between Ericsson and Sony, but now a Sony Ericsson exec refutes these rumours of a split.

TechRadar has spoken with Richard Dorman, who’s a Senior Marketing Manager at Sony Ericsson, who refuted the rumours: “The relationship between Sony and Ericsson is a strong as it ever has been, and neither plan to walk away.”

Dorman also commented on Sony Ericsson’s not so bright financial situation:

“I was just on a conference call with the head of western Europe, and he made a great point: before the partnership both Sony and Ericsson’s handset divisions were losing money, but we proved a partnership can work. We had a tough time in 2008, a tough 12 months, but that doesn’t mean the partnership will dissolve. As far as we’re concerned, it’s full steam ahead, and we’ll look to the power of the partnership to turn things around.”

In my opinion he proves a valid point. Both Ericsson’s and Sony’s handset divisions were losing a lot of money before the joint venture, and I can’t see that changing if they split up. What do you think?

I can’t write a confident opinion about it as I don’t really have financial stats before they joined forces, and during 2008, but one thing that’s pretty clear is that Sony Ericsson handsets are top class and can often be the best, which had not been the case with Sony and Ericsson separately.
The economic crisis will affect everybody, no matter if they are separate of joint, so SE should move through this tough time, and the future is bright in my opinion.

I hope they make it too, but they are going to have to try and minimize losses as much as they can because Sony is losing billions and Ericsson without the venture is making money.  I’m sure prior to the venture that even though each companies individual handset divisions were losing money, the companies as a whole were very profitable.  This is not the case anymore, especially with global economic situation.  SE needs a halo handset that needs to be to it, what the iPhone was to Apple, Pre to Palm, Storm to RIM…the XPERIA had the potential, but was not because of delays and the expense.
