Sony Ericsson confirms fewer phones in 2009

In an article at Financial Times, Sony Ericsson’s President, Hideki ‘Dick’ Komiyama, explains that Sony Ericsson will merge the current three Research & Development sections to just one, in order to not develope the same stuff. Dick Komiyama continues by confirming that Sony Ericsson will reduce its 2009 portfolio with about 20 percent compared to the 2008 portfolio.

One of the most interesting quotes is this: “Consumer confidence is less almost day by day”. Must say I agree.

I feel sorry for Mr Komiyama, he has taken on massive responsibility but seems to be trying to make the best of a bad situation. Its up to him to make huge changes to SE in many ways. If he can do it, then he is without a doubt a quality guy!

  6. Chu iAN says:

fewer phones are not that bad. as long as they make good phones. =)
hope to see 2009 loaded with more innovative phones and some technological break through.

  7. WhyBe says:

Fewer phones makes a lot of sense considering Apple is kicking everyone’s @ss with just one :)

  8. Yawatmahui says:

Apple’s kicking everyone else with the iphone? LOL Its essentially a steaming pile of crap. The only thing it had over other phones was the fact that it had huge amounts of built in storage, which was then squished by the Nokia N96.

  9. Brian says:

fewer phones means more individual phones instead if duplicating one design for different series

  10. makr says:

at least SE is moving in a better direction IMHO.  that means they have learned their lesson with regards to their phone strategy.

  11. Martin says:

I’m still waiting for the touch screen phone made by SE. Sorry but Xperia is made for buisseness customers and 17mm thickness is way to much.

  12. Soul says:

ya fewer phones is good lol, unlike samsung that releases crap load of phones every week

  13. Wouter says:

Oeh the SE C905 is ready to order here in The Netherlands.
Two shops confirmed that they are on sale this Saturday :D

(not to hjack the treat btw :P)

We can now see how dicky deals with this terrible situation left by the ill-fated miles flint administration. he’s one liing reason why i loved japanese influence into technology.
    Gambatte kudasai komiyama-san :D

    @ Michell:

He says that they reduce the portfolio with 20% compared to the portfolio of 2008.
Do you know about how many phones they are speaking?
How big is the portfolio of 2008 (how many phones did come out?)

    Wouter

  16. Michell says:

    Wouter,
So far they’ve announced about thirty models with a few more to come within a few weeks, and that should be it for this year. A 20% reduction would be 6-7 phones.

Your comment seems to hint that he was talking about Sony Ericsson. Read the actual sentence from the article:

Reflecting on the economic downturn and the banking crisis, Mr Komiyama said: “Consumer confidence is less almost day by day.”

  18. Drasko says:

Xperia will contribute in this confidence fall: only one model with suspicious qality, long waiting to reliable OS and high price/qality ratio!!
    Bad very bad!
But loking the face of thiat man I am not sorry!
