Sony Ericsson C905 Questions & Answers

I promised that I’d do a post answering most of the tons of questions asked in the comments of the Sony Ericsson C905 post. So, this is what I’ll be doing in this post. Note, that it’s possible there might be some slight changes in the final production unit.

Q. What kind of phone is this?

A. It’s a quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE phone (all versions) with UMTS & HSDPA support in the European version (2100 MHz) and American version (850 / 900 / 2100 MHz). We’re guessing it’s 3.6 Mbps HSDPA.

Q. When will it be available and at what price?

A. It’ll be available in early Q4. We expect the price to be around £400 SIM free.

Q. What’s the camera specifications?

A. It’s an 8.1 mega pixel camera sensor (3264 x 2448 pixels) with auto focus and face recognition, and many more advanced camera features. It’s got a xenon flash for still photos, and a photo flash (the improved one) for videos. Videos are recorded in VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels) QVGA resolution (320 x 240 pixels). It does not feature optical zoom. The focal length is 5.91 mm, and the aperture is fixed at f/2.8.

Q. What kind of display is it?

A. It’s a 2.4 inch large scratch-resistant TFT display made of mineral glass. The resolution is QVGA (240 x 320 pixels). It can show up to 262.144 colours (18 bit).

Q. Is this a smart phone? What’s the OS?

A. No, this is a feature phone, not running any sort of smart phone operating system. It looks like it’ll run a newly developed OS based on the older A2 platform, although this has not been confirmed.

Q. What’s the web browser in it?

A. Access NetFront.

Q. How much memory does it have?

A. 160 megabytes of internal memory storage, and a 2 gigabyte Memory Stick Micro (M2) comes bundled.

Q. Does it feature W-LAN?

A. Yes, it does, and with further support for DLNA. No details on whether this is 802.11b or 802.11b/g.

Q. Does it feature a 3.5 mm jack port?

A. No, it doesn’t feature a 3.5 mm jack port.

Q. Does it feature mobile TV?

A. You can have TV streamed to the phone via UMTS / HSDPA, but there’s no DVB-H support or alike.

I guess that was it :-)

    @Michell

I suppose this FAQ is your response to all the people who were asking about optical zoom over at Esato…I think on like five or six pages we do have at least one question regarding that matter :)

  2. Michell Bak says:

Actually, it’s the response to all the questions asked in the C905 post comments, but yeah…

    ;)

  3. teamet says:

Isn’t it very odd they didn’t include touch functionality to the screen? I mean.. they’ve just invented this smart new interface for the c902 - then why not include it in the upgrade?

  4. Muhammad-Oli says:

@teamet: This is not an upgrade to the C902. They are separate model lines. My guess is that this is the K850i upgrade. Those touch sensitive buttons on the C902 are probably just a one-off for that phone, in my opinion.

Oh and I’m glad they didn’t include it. It would have meant either an even bigger and heavier phone, or a smaller screen, and on a flagship device that is not really logical.

  5. karun says:

    @teamet

The C905 will be running on an improved A2 platform, not on UIQ 3x, hence the lack of touchscreen.

  6. trigatch4 says:

    You didnt answer this?

Will it “officially” be called the Shiho? The C905? Something else?

  7. Pop lover says:

    trigatch4
    The Phone Codename is Shiho
    Officially C905 ;)

    Really Awesome Phone
I think it’s success will be like the K800’s one

Thanks Mizzle for Sharing us these precious info about Shiho…

you said that C905 will be shiped with TV-Out Cable ITC-60
is that mean that we will be able to use this Cable with other SE Phones Like C902?

    Thanks again :)

  8. trigatch4 says:

    Poplover…

It seems most “big/important” phones these days are getting “names”. iPhone, Instinct, Voyager, Xperia, etc…

So Sony Ericsson is just going to call this the C905? Maybe I’m not sure if “codename” is a purely internal name for SE or if it will called that by consumers, and retailers as well?

  9. Pop lover says:

Xperia is a brand name not a cellphone name just like Wlakman and Cybershot..
100% it’s going to be called C905 or C903 according to the new naming system
all of SE Insiders said that C905 so it’s C905….

Shiho cannot be the traditional name of SE Phone C905 of course it will be the well known name :)

Specially to other manufactures >>> not mean Samsung and Nokia at all hehehe :D

  10. Michell Bak says:

Never said it’ll be shipped with the TV-out cable. I said the TV-out cable would be announced at the same date.

  11. SuperInggo says:

    Michell,
Any idea what is it’s Processor? I’m just curious because it’s the first time an SE phone is powerfull enough to support VGA 30fps. That’s obviously alot more powerfull that nexperia so y not use it in paris then?

  12. Michell Bak says:

Nope, I’ve got no idea about the processor. It’s not really the first time - the K850 and alike are also capable of encoding in VGA, Sony Ericsson have just chosen not to include it. It won’t be more powerful than X1, that’s for sure. And with regards to Paris, there’s thing called incompatibility, meaning not everything will fit/work in every device.

  13. Pop lover says:

    emmm sorry for that ….
that’s mean the cable will be Compitable with the previous Phone like GPS headset..

  14. Michell Bak says:

Yes, I think it will be backwards compatible.

  15. opera says:

    W-LAN - Yeees :)
    VGA Videos - Yeees :)
    NetFront - :(

  16. weijack says:

Thanks for good FAQ! still one more question: will it feature “auto rotation”? don’t know how you call it, I wish it will auto rotate while I am using the XMB with my photo/video.

  17. Michell Bak says:

If you really wanted to know, you would have read this properly:
    http://blog.se-nse.net/2008/06/10/revealing-c905-aka-shiho/

Yes, it does feature an accelerometer, which is required to auto rotate stuff.

  18. shgl2005 says:

Not support feature optical zoom :( !! , it’s Disappointing

    maybe in other versions..
    I hope so that soon

    Thanks

  19. Adrian says:

Wonder what Nokia will pull off now… the N96 just lost

  20. Chris S says:

to the guy who said netfront this phone will be compatible with opera so don’t worry about that :D also the new netfront browsers kick ass though

  21. Harry says:

I don’t know what to say about this phone??? It’s good but still not what SE should have come up with a flagship Cybershot phone…

The G900 has touch autofocus (I know many won’t use it but it will be fun to use, atleast for me) and the X1 can capture images and videos in widescreen (I know most people don’t care about this but I would love this feature, also SE Japanese phones have this too)…

But these are not that huge drawbacks for me, for me, the lack of Optical Zoom is… I know it’s not a digital camera but I don’t wanna carry a seperate one in my pocket, I would want my High-End Cybershot Flagship Phone to be able to do that…

  22. Harry says:

Oh, forgot to say, THANKS A LOT Michell for the pics… ;)

  23. Pop lover says:

OMG disappointed ppl all the way…

  24. Sasha says:

Well, I think that this would just be the perfect mobile for me. I just have a few questions:
What resolution will be the video out and using what av connection?
Will this “cable” be completable on older phones without additional se software?
I would most likely get this phone instead of getting the new iPhone, but is it gonna come out the same time as the xpepria?

  25. DrSilverworm says:

I guess we don’t know whether or not it will have a torch function, and more importantly…

Where is the speaker located?! I’m growing worrisome about the speaker

  26. bodeh6 says:

It will have a torch. That is why it has a PhotoFlash LED.

  30. sonyericsson4ever says:

    this best fone out dere

  31. nseriesuser says:

on gsmarena it says the video is QVGA

  32. Abdeen says:

Will this phone be able to take sat nav of any kind?

  33. steo says:

i am glad there is no tuch on this phone.

  34. Brian says:

Michell, I think you should now EDIT the phone’s Video Resolution.

  35. paula says:

hey was wondering if anyone knew what the little icon was that i have on my screen, its a lil square thats yellow with a green tick in the top right hand corner with a few white lines which are slanted

  36. Toshe says:

It has to have a smart phone OS because in the full specs on gsmarena it says it has WiFi and I don’t know any phone from Sony Ericsson or another company for that matter that has WiFi and isn’t a smart phone

  37. Toshe says:

and also it has both the xenon flash and the LED light so it will have a quality flash and will probably be able to use it as a torch as well.

  38. Badar says:

When it will comes in india.

  39. rei says:

Do you know when will they sell this in the Philippines? :)

  40. james bobbler says:

N95 came out over a year ago with 640×480@30fps video. If you have never had a phone with this feature you will not realise that after being able to make phone calls this is far and away the best feature a phone can have, forget taking statuc silent photos. So SE have a new phone with qvga video in late 2008, whoopee doo what a waste of metal.

  41. John Rawstron says:

I totally agree with what James has just said in the last post.  There are so many phones out now which can record at VGA 30fps.  Take for instance the Viewty that records at that quality straight to divx.  Even the new LG 8mp that is due in october as well, will have this feature with the xenon flash & face recognition like the SE C905.

SE should learn how to move with the times as QVGA is a quality that is no longer wanted in handsets.  Sure it is good for youtube, but having it piped out onto a large screen tv via the tv out, will look really cheap & shoddy.

I am a sony fan boy but will resort in getting a different handset because of the bad video capture.

  42. Harvey says:

hi everyone - im a new user of the c905 and was wondering if anyone knew what the ‘H’ in the blue box is at the top of the screen right hand side ?????  any possible answer please reply back ! thank you!

  43. Jess says:

Hi I was also wondering what the little H in the blue box is all about?  It disappears every now n then and then comes back for a while, apparently completely at random!  Can’t find anything about it in the manuals or anywhere!
If anyone has any clues please let us know, thank you!

  44. Jess says:

I’ve just found on another review site (but for the C702) a comment that says a similar sounding ‘H’ in a box means you’re in a high speed 3G reception area, maybe that’s it.

  45. Michell says:

The H is displayed when an HSPA connection is active, whether it be HSDPA or HSUPA (depending on your phone, of course)

  46. kunchu says:

why the folder lock or video lock facilities in sonyericsson mobiles

  47. Neofytos says:

I bought a C905 3 days ago. At first everything were OK but then I noticed that when I leave the phone at stand-by screen for some minutes, the screen goes black (although the phone is working).Even I open the phone the screen is still black. In order for the screen to work OK again I leave the phone closed for some minutes and then it works alright

What can I do to fix it ?
