Putting an end to all the speculation, Sony Ericsson have confirmed that the Xperia X10 will eventually be updated to a newer version of Android at some point of time after its launch. Addressing questions from fans and critics whether the X10’s Android 1.6 OS will prove to be competitive enough in the long run, Sumit Malhotra on the SE Product blog has confirmed that ‘there will be a software update for the X10 that will upgrade the complete Sony Ericsson User Experience Platform based on newer version of the Android OS.’
Hence in all probability, X10 will launch with Android 1.6 which will be updated to a ‘newer Android version’ later. Sony Ericsson has however not specified which version it’ll eventually be updated to.

The interviewer(?) to the
guy:
“When can we expect a release?”
“You can check out sony ericsson.com for more information” (or something like that)
He didn’t want to answer the question <-<
The :se: guy makes a valid point about the importance of the OS version and it maybe being a false way to sell a phone.
I don’t agree because If a phones OS isn’t updated by the manufacturer consumers won’t move from their iPhone which has a OS update many times a year and to an extent give the phone a new lease of life especially in a mobile phone climate where carriers insist on 18 – 24 month contracts.
There is enough competition in the market to reduce X10 sales without SE themselves being the reason consumers wont buy the phone.
In the spirit of the X1, SE will release and update for X10 in the form of the new X20 phone. X1 users got WM6.5 in the form of the X2.

I agree with the above. SE is adding to the reason not to buy this device. I refuse to buy ANY Android device not running a minimum of 2.0 — and look at SE or Motorola with their new devices coming out with 1.6. Sorry, but I’ll stick with the “others” for now. Stop the silliness of “we will update it after release” and do it right

Guys, “vanilla” Android phones will always come out faster with upgrades than any pimped ones like the X10 from SE.
The reason Motorola got it is that they were “preferred customer” by Google for the 2.0 so NO ONE got it except them. Then Google launched their own Nexus, of course with vanilla 2.0 since they made the software.
SE’s X10 will also come with incremential upgrades like 2.X and continously – they know that it is the way to go but they need to get the phone out ASAP first.
Software development takes time and SE has only been coding on android for less than one year so I’d cut them some slack. But that’s just me cause I’m patient and I have the w995 already so I’m not in a hurry.
I’d bet my left nut that we’ll see X10 with a 2.X upgrade in Q2!
Sony Ericsson IS AN IDIOT – they are LOSING MONEY hand over fist and STILL PLAYING THIS STUPID RETARDED catch-up game with both their prospective buyers and competitors?
SHOCKING mismanagement and utter lack of sense… you launched this phone IN FUCKIN NOVEMBER – and it’s February and it’s still under development, while the underlying OS was upgraded TWICE!
SE is one of the MOST FUCKIN INCOMPETENT COMPANY on Earth, no wonder they are bleeding money everywhere: they have great engineering talents but COMPLETELY CLUELESS IDIOTS AT THE HELM RUIN EVERYTHING.
So the Mobile World has started Splashingly with Microsoft Releasing event of Windows 7 Phone Series which is beyond the expectations of many! It looks awsome and promising full set of features and functionality! Now the loyal fans like me of Sony Ericsson are very keenly waiting for the Best in Class Flagship phone from Design Experts: Sony Ericsson!
It would be a welcome Edition if Sony Ericsson can release a Business Phone which is fully personalized and packed with all goodies of the Industry! Like an Amazing Camera from Satio or Vivaz with Xenon Flash, An Arc Slider Design with full querty keyboard from Xperia X1 and Boasting TimeScape and Land Scape applications from Xperia X10 with 16M colors and Intigrated Contacts with VoIP and Skype, Multi Tasking, 32 GB Inbuilt Memory, High Resolution Display and always online capablities which Nokia is Boasting of about theirN900 and N97 Flagship phones!
Still there is no information on when will the Xperia X10 will get an OS update to the latest version 2.0 or 2.1 and do it support 16M colours when its get the upgrade?
You forgot the PS3 remote play and PSN capabilites… SE need to eat their own dog food.
After owning a samsung i8910, I’d be wary of manufacturers promising updates but not delivering. I’m sticking with manufacturers who have a known update history, fabulous specs or not. When I see some updating happening, then’ll I’ll part with my hard earned coin.
I’d been waiting since before November to get this phone and having picked it up on Friday I can’t say I’m disappointed! I’m new to Android so it may be that I’m just overwhelmed with having a phone that does more than just send text and make calls but I’ve got to say the X 10 is just great!!!
It may have been overlooked in the hype about the spec’s of the phone but the 4in screen makes it perfect for web browsing and the 1GHz snapdragon processor makes the pages load faster than my laptop.
This phone is one of the best on the market at the moment and when they upgrade it to ver 2.0 of Android and it has Googles sat nav and IF it gets remote play for the PS3 i’d have to call it the Iphone killer, just look what happened to HDDVD, if you can hook it up to your PS3 people will go out and buy it before their contracts even up!
Bumping what Warlord said. I’ve also had the phone for little over a week now, and must say that it’s great. The screen is big, the camera very good, and it’s fast. The hardware is more than good enough, and the software update will only increase its loveliness.
I’ve my X10 a few days and was always going to stay with SE, the X10 is fantastic, I imagine I have a 1.6 version with only 65k colours – still looks sharp and colourful. Changed up from the x1 and the x10 is how phones should be. I await the sat nav becoming available but otherwise this phone is great I’m so impressed with it
I got my phone a few days ago, I’m looking forward to the new android V. I could careless about the color count, its a phone. my biggest gripe is with the battery life. any improvements to that would be appreciated. a whole day’s use pushes this thing to the limit. all the functionality is great and wonderful, but it becomes useless on the train home when the battery runs out of juice. other than that, i’m happy

don’t know if you can, that is up to you.
but if update is available, i don’t see what would stopping you to update it
finaly SE is taking steps to enrich itz beast.
It is possible to update through a PC right? Because I live in Trinidad and Tobago and this phone is only now available through our cell service. We don’t even have 3G yet. Only BB internet service. I’m planning to get this phone at the end of October. I hear about the update coming in Q4, however will I be able to update through a PC??
Q. Is this phone worth buying or would i be better off with a Nokia N97 ??
Replies would be appreciated…
Xperia X10 will be upgraded on around the end of Nov with Android2.1. So finally Xperia X10 will be supported the multi-touch, 720p HD recording and DLNA. Let’s looking forward to come! True or lie? it depends on yourself.
@Marteau: Yes, you can update your device even without downloading directly to your phone. Just download the update service software from sonyericsson site and you can follow the steps there to update your phone software.. But i dont know if there any other issues that would prevent you from updating it(region etc).
