Say hello to the G705

The arabic community se4m.com is well known for providing pics and information on upcoming Sony Ericsson phones. Today they strike again as they present us the first pictures of what is supposed to be a new G-Series slider.
The device sports a 3.2 megapixels fixed focus camera with an LED. Other features include a built-in GPS, 2.4 inch display, and it runs the A2 software platform. It will also have built-in WLAN!
We expect this phone to be announced together with Remi in about a fortnight.
All pics after the jump.

This maybe another great SE phones innovation!
I like the design, it looks descent with 3.2 megapixels but what’s the difference between 3.2 cybershot?
anyway I look forward to see this phone in my country….
Proud SE P1 user!
being an SE fan, this is starting to fustrate me….
The lack of auto focus on all of their new phones… WHY??
SE…why no AF???
the design quite ok n nice…but WHY NO AF????? with that thickness shud hv more features on it
Well, the design looks GREAT i love how it looks.
But always that one or two things that holds me back from getting it.
Sigh…
Well being as this looks like a mid-range phone, I guess they’re leaving the autofocus to the higher end phones like the c905 and g900
Great innovation by Sony Ericsson. It design facinates me alot, but their is a lack of feature modification in this hand set. They must improve it little more.
does it have WIFI?!?!
Where is 16 M color Screen?
Where is Standard 3.5mm headphone jack?
Too many buttons!
SE is rather stubborn like Sony (Like No Others).
“3.2 megapixels but what’s the difference between 3.2 cybershot?”
Well a Cybershot phone will have AF and features like bestpic, face dectection etc.
This is not marketed as a Cybershot, so these features will be missing.
I think this phone focuses on GPS Navigation Only, but the Screen is a bit small.
If I were right, the functions would waste this design.
“Where is 16 M color Screen?
Where is Standard 3.5mm headphone jack?
Too many buttons!”
1) Can you SEE 16M colors? A longer lasting battery, now THAT I can use.
2) How difficult is it for people to plug in the fastport adapter? Would you rather enjoy the convenience of a handsfree and music at one shot or do you wanna be a mindless drone who wants useless features just because “The other phone has it”?
3) Well, lets design ONE button for all 10 digits then!
Wake me up when you have some REAL complaints, Mr. Tired SE “Supporter”…
[...] büyüklüğünde. GPS’e sahip. Ürünle resmi duyuru henüz yok, Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog’da yazdığına göre Ağustos ayının ortalarında [...]
Dear Synn,
1) Can you SEE 16M colors? A longer lasting battery, now THAT I can use.
–> How many color does a popular LCD TV or Plasma TV have? Do they design that TVs for aliens?
2) How difficult is it for people to plug in the fastport adapter? Would you rather enjoy the convenience of a handsfree and music at one shot or do you wanna be a mindless drone who wants useless features just because “The other phone has it”?
–> Fast Post requires a dongle, it makes the phone look ugly, you can not use popular headphone without that dongle. Many phones support handfree and standard headphone (iPhone for example).
Many journalists have criticized this problem, I don’t think they don’t have the reason.
3) Well, lets design ONE button for all 10 digits then!
–> Well, this phone may be G705, so it is in the G series (Organizer Phones). It should come with touch screen like other G series phones, if it is, 7 navigation buttons will be too many. I don’t mention the traditional digit buttons.
To be a SE supporter is not saying what SE are willing to listen, SE supporters should tell SE the truth.
If you really want to protect the SE design, you should take more acceptable reasons.
1) Since when did you start watching “Lost” on your cellphone? Also, Plasma and LCD TVs plug into an AC supply, in case you didn’t know.
2) Fastport allows a secure locking mechanism that won’t come loose easily (unlike the 3.5 mm jack).
The phone and the dongle are usually hidden inside one’s pocket. So unless you have someone peeping in there, I don’t see why “ugliness” is an issue. The adapter also has the mic and a call receive/ end button. If you cannot see the usefulness of this, I feel extremely sorry for you.
The fast port is the simplest, most elegant solution for listening to music and answering a call seamlessly. Let’s see how many competitors can offer this user experience…
Speakin’ of users, funnily enough, I am yet to hear from an actual SE user complain about this matter. “Journalists” who forward their monthly bills to Finland are a whole different matter though.
3) Not everyone likes a touchscreen phone. Some of us despise them, actually. There is nothing wrong in offering something for everyone within a segment and the phone doesn’t feature any more keys than the accepted norm.
Which brings the question, have you ever USED an SE? If you have, you won’t be complaining about the “Number of keys” and such non-issues.
Again, find something real to complain about, please.
I agree with Synn. since when 11 digits of buttons including the 5-key navigation is too much for you. have you count Nokia N81, N96, etc??? LOL
As Synn said…. “Again, find something real to complain about, please.” huahaaaahhaaa….
Hi Synn,
Thank you for your try, but I am now also “tired” with your explanations.
1> If power is the most important thing, You should use monochrome screen instead.
2> I used P910, P990, W810 and now I am using P1i, I can not find anything interesting with the SE dongle (adapter). For newer phones, the FastPost is located on the side of the phone, so that you can use the handfree while the phone is put in carrying case, but with the older phone (P1i) you can not.
Even when SE puts the FastPost on the side, It makes you feel not convenient when holding the phone in hand.
SE is not the only phones that can use with handfree, iPhone can do too (without a dongle) and many others.
3> This is the leaking information only and the author hasn’t shown the full features and specs yet. My guest is that the phone comes with touch screen, I don’t mention that I like of dislike touch screen.
You should try phones from other brands to see the differences and understand why SE is overcome by LG in market share in the first half of 2008.
Once more:
Standard headphone is used popularly in many cellphones and other handheld decvices, this is the first time I hear the complaint of its quality from Synn.
Sony is also using standard headphone with its Walkman players and many other devices.
for one thing, I have to agree with Synn about the screen resolution. We are talking about mobility and battery sustainability here. The only reason mobile devices can’t fit higher resolution screens with more realistic pictures and colours is because the BATTERIES cannot keep up in terms of battery life and SIZE. So, unless you want to carry a car battery around with you at all times, you cant have great screen resolutions in mobile devices.
2nd…about the fast port thing, it is a very subjective matter as “SE purists” would support the use of the adapter and “hardcore music enthuthiasts” would prefer the 3.5mm jack. IMO, SE SHOULD look into giving the market a choice of 3.5mm jacks. Especially in their Walkman phones. Maybe some other phones can still use the FastPort and the adapter. But there is certainly a growing demand in 3.5mm jack due to the quality of audio that the 3.5mm headphones can provide. But since this is G705, i shall think that it’s OK that it doesnt have 3.5mm slot. oh well…
3rd, the number of buttons are just fine for me. i dont think there’s touchscreen in this phone judging the existence of the softkey buttons… But the matter of design is also very subjective. So, no point bickering over such matter. Send your opinions to SE straight.
sigh…was hoping more from a G slider…maybe on the G905 =D
SE used to have a 2.5 jack in their P800, P900 and P910 with handsfree capability. When the Fastport was introduced they abandoned the idea with two connectors.
the phone is look alike of Xperia X1…
Quite weird that this is phone has a “G” prefix. This isn’t a smartphone nor a touchscreen.
Generally, this design looks good.
But it is not camera phone nor smartphone nor touch-screen phone, what is the kind of this phone?
Is this a normal slider?
Tired so ‘n so…
1) Read a bit more carefully before replying. Some of your answers have enough holes in it to give Swiss cheese a complex.
2) Judging by popular opinion, I win. No hard feelings…
Everyone complaining about the 3.5mm adapter: The way some of you put it, it seems like a standard 3.5mm headphone is INCOMPATIBLE with SE phones. Not so. About the “Quality”, can somebody please care to explain to me how the fastport+adapter significantly lowers the sound quality? We’re not talking optic fibre vs copper wire here, are we?
My basic understanding of physics tells me that there may be a slight signal degradation due to the extra set of contact points. But not by much. Then again, I am willing to overlook this for the convenience offered by the integrated handsfree.
Did I mention that I am a musician?

i want to give some comments about the screen color, the 3.5mm audio jack, and err.. the “too many” buttons issues.
well, about the screen i agree with synn. it’s phone that we’re talking here, not a home theater, plus higher color resolution not just consume more battery life but also the phone price, why SE need to put a very high color res for the screen if the lower res is more than enough and it can keep the phone price reachable for wider range of market ?
the 3.5mm jack is not a must, i agree with synn again. the fact is not every people really have to plug their 3.5mm headset to their phone. as long as SE have a good headset supplied to the market, people won’t care about the audio jack. will you insist to choose a 3.5mm headset if you can use a better headset that use the supplied audio port ??
about the “too many” buttons issue, well i think there is no such thing as “too many buttons” for cellphones. infact many reviewer give a higher score for phones that have well supplied buttons, mostly for the navigation. if you can make a phone that has well supplied buttons, yet still have a good design and shape, plus the buttons have good tactility, you’ll get a high score from reviewers for your phone, and of course, the market

Just to clarify, the G-series isn’t strictly for smartphones. The G502 is one example.
Together with hidden antenna, color screen is a revolution in cellphone industry. People need bigger and brighter screen or not depending on their opinions. The common trend is cellphones with better screen. Especially, many manufacturers consider cellphone is multi-function device, for example, cellphones for music lovers, cellphones for businessmen, cellphones for fashion lovers, cellphones for camera lovers …
Except cellphones for pure phone, all other trends need better screen. If you really need phone function only, Ericsson 688 is your best choice :).
It is manufacturers are to solve consumption power problem, it is not users. Many bigger manufacturers provide bigger and better screens, why SE not? or SE’d like to lag behind others? One more thing, only some cellphones from SE have good battery life, not all.
2. Fastpost
Fastpost is proprietary of SE. But I think it is not only solution. If SE really take this serious, it will find many better ways to change Fastpost to more compatible post while maintain its full functions. Combination of 3.5 mm jack and data post may be an idea.
There is nothing to say about the quality of standard 3.5 mm jack. There are many things to say about Fastpost mechanism (if someone really need to know, I will explain later).
3. “Too many buttons”
No more comments. It depends on the design.
Minimalist is trend now.
Being a SE fan (337, 388, 688, T630, P910, W810, P990, P1i and … ), firstly I feel unfair when someone criticizes SE phones, because I think my choice is best choice. When I see some people change their new SE phones for very simple reasons, for example, when they make or receive a phone call, the display numbers are too small. I rethink that something wrong in the heads of SE designers.
The 3 issues mentioned above are just some examples. Maybe my explanations are not strong enough to prove my idea, but the fact has proved SE are going the wrong way.
The biggest problems of SE now are not leading innovation and the long distance from R&D to Market, the minor problems are many. As a SE fan I hope SE has something to show in the second half of this year.
So…the G series isn’t touchscreen or UIQ…so what exactly defines the G?
Dude,
1) In case you didn’t know, I’ll let you in on something that most of the world has already noticed:
The difference between 256k and 16M is not as drastic as say betweek 1024 and 256k. Certainly not within the diminutive dimensions of the average cellphone screen. You WON’T be able to make out a marked difference in 9/10 cases.
What matters however, is accurate color reporduction, good depth, visibility in the sun, an appealing UI which makes good use of colors and contrast, minimal lag and most importantly, GOOD BATTERY LIFE!
All those things, SE is on top of. If what you need is paper-spec superiority, more power to thee. But for me, being able to make a call with a 256k phone when I’m stranded is more important than holding on to a “DAZZLING” 16M phone with a dead battery. Different priorities, I guess.
2) So let me get this straight: You want to do away with ONE port that offers an all in one solution and introduce TWO in it’s place? And I thought you were rooting for minimalism!
3) Speakin’ of minimalism, you seem to have a different idea of it. As someone wh has studied it, let me explain it to you: “Minimalism is an artstyle when the subject is reduced to the basic functional elements”. Explain to me how a D pad and two soft keys are non-functional in a non-touch phone. Also explain to me how the competition is doing this differently.
Let’s face it: All of your “Complaints” are subjective. None factual. You can keep fighting a losing battle, But I’m pretty sure I have made my point clear and contered everything you have with facts. Catcha again later in some other post.
…next time, please do come up wit real complaints.

WOW that is very nice, i love those menus excellent job also i love the beautiful black with the squared look i’ve always preferred it to the circular sides and 2.4 is great, wifi is also great, if only they could do something about that fixed focus….hope fully it will be about $350 or less
I am sorry Synn.
.
I am not here to win or lose
I think such a website is a fan zone and SE will look on to see the feedback before it reveals new cellphones. So I just present my idea plainly. I hope SE will listen to different opinions and find its way.
As I mentioned above, the 3 issues are just examples, but they are problems of opinion, we can not discuss this problems to an end.
If Synn really want to win, I will surrender now
.
No worries, mate.. I can definitely see the enthusiasm in you. It’s just that your priorities W.R.T needed features are misplaced.
Ever since some “reviewers” raised insipid complaints like “The lack of a 3.5mm jack”, I see quite a few people take their views as gospel truths an preach along wherever they go. But think about it for a moment. Are these REALLY make or break features?
SE gives you playlist advancing (and soon, volume control) through shake control. The W595 has a headphone splitter feature which helps two people listen to the song played. And so on. Now THESE are features that you can actually use in real life.
If paper specs are the end of it all for you, then you’re looking at the wrong phone company man. This one concentrates on the betterment of user experience.

I’ve just gotten a G900 because my S550 was stolen, and then I saw this one which should really have been the phone of my choice. But I find one major flaw, and that’s not too many buttons, color depth or anything like that. It’s that the camera is not underneath the slider. That was one brilliant thing with the S550 that I miss with the G900. Whenever I use the camera now, I first have to thoroughly rinse it. I really, really hoped that this would be the slider camera phone with (in opposition to G900) a kind of “real” flash. And then they place the camera on the same stupid place as the G900 with no cover?!?!
BTW when it comes to autofocus… I’m a bit unsure if I want it, ‘couse the G900 has it but is so slow it’s close to making the whole camera useless. Autofocus on this kind of miniscule cameras seems to use near a second to adjust.

[...] Well, hello beautiful! Sony Ericsson has a gorgeous slider phone in development: the G705. The G705 slider will feature GPS, Wi-Fi, a 2.4″ display, a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, and 128 mb of internal memory. Rumours are that the slider will drop first in Arabic nations, but we’ll know more in a couple of weeks, when Sony holds an official press conference. [Via se-nse] [...]

Actually about the Sony Ericsson’s screens, they are getting better and better and many of newer phones actually almost match Nokia’s screen quality. Sony Ericsson is beginning to actually discover what 256K screens capabilities; Sharp has already done that with their AQUOS cell phone displays, which are the best in the mobile industry (btw AQUOS displays are also 256K).

Good looking phone, they are getting better and better..
My short review of the Sony Ericsson G705:
After only three months of use, the list of significant deficiencies is long. Some of the communication features simply don’t work. That’s true for ActiveSync and conferencing.
Furthermore there are significant ongoing costs (estimated for one year around 1500 US Dollar) as the phone dials-in without knowledge/permission of the user.
Important features such as ActiveSync, conferences, Handsfree are unusable. The build-in camera is poor, no flash, unsharp photos.
Flight mode is out of reach and can be set only if you reboot the phone.
The silver color peels down from the buttons, looks ugly.
Phone crashes from time to time and you have to reboot it every three days. Reboot is slow, up to two minutes.
The instruction/user guide is useless as important things like meaning of icons are not mentioned. Topics are described superficially without any value.
Sony Ericsson support is incompetent and not able to help. Software updates not available so far.
This phone is one single empty promise! Disappointing!
If you do the comparison to the SE P1 which was also not a real highlight, the G705 is the worst phone ever.
I strongly advise: Don’t get the G705!
Just grabbed the feed… thanks for posting this.
