PlayNow Arena set to launch on Monday!

According to Danish and Swedish mobile magazine Mobil, Sony Ericsson’s long awaited PlayNow Arena service will launch in Nordic countries this Monday. The service has been postponed quite some time, but it should be ready on Monday. The prime focus of the PlayNow Arena store will naturally be music, and Sony Ericsson will have one million songs ready for customers in the Nordic countries on Monday, with no less than four million songs in the pipeline. The best part, however, is that all the songs will be free of any DRM protection, so you can copy your songs unrestrictedly, which can be very useful if you get a new phone, computer, etc.

Sony Ericsson hopes that TrackID is going to attract tons of people to the PlayNow Arena store. The free TrackID service is used more than 200,000 times a day, which should provide a nice foundation for the store.

The songs downloaded from PlayNow Arena will cost between £0.80 - £1 per song. If you choose to download from your phone, the download will be a 1.5 megabyte song, encoded in eAAC+ at 48 Kbps, which sounds a whole lot better than you might think. If you use the computer client, you’ll get larger MP3 files encoded at 320 Kbps.

The PlayNow Arena service will of course not be all about music - you can download and buy games from here as well. Most games will go for about £4, but quite a few are said to be free, which is lovely!

PlayNow Arena is expected to be available for most phones newer than K800, so if your Sony Ericsson phone is a year or two old, you should be covered. If your phone, however, is not supported, you can use the PC client, and then transfer it to your phone.

You can check out many pictures of the service at this link.
