Paris & BeiBei Cancelled

As some may already be aware both Paris and the G702, otherwise known by the codename BeiBei, have both been cancelled. Whilst this might not be news to some of you we have a new twist on the story that might be. There is the suggestion that both of these handsets were cancelled due to a large volume of criticism from reviewers and other industry watchers, including recent articles on Mobile-Review.com

The story doesn’t end there because we are hearing that whilst Paris and the G702 may have been cancelled in Europe, they might still make an appearance in Asia.

OMG you have to be shitting me how the hell did this happen?>?! wow this is the worst news i’ve heard from SE all year….those bastards at mobile-review i told you they’re were biased f)#@*$# i highly doubt it’ll go to asia unless they update the processor or something i was waiting for paris now im gonna have to get a samsung i900 until the SE C905 what a sad day….

  2. Franz says:

well i thinked bei bei sucked since first i saw it, too much buttons for a phone with touchscreen by being not really aimed at nothing, and with that weired scroll wheel that just an asian could like, but paris seemed kind of nice, a p1 in a slider form factor, plus some improvements, guess this means SE is leaving symbian behind and adopting WM as their new smartphone platform, sad….

  3. Tigershark says:

Cancelled in Europe but available elsewhere? AW CRAP!

  4. Michell says:

    Chris S,
It’s not just Mobile-review, but basically most mobile forums, due to its old specifications. I wasn’t exactly excited about it either. Only BeiBei, which is sad.

  8. Samuel says:

I’m bad with this. P5i was my hope to continuous with sony ericsson. I think symbian uiq too good, but why sony dont release realy good phones?

I think SE will sell cheap phones more and more. And yours prestige will be forget and anyones will buy weak phones. In here(Brasil), sony sells too much because its prestige.

I have one p1i but i dont know wich SE cell buy because doesnt exist phone against nokia and i hate nokia.

Xperaia X1 will be much $$$$$$$ because all windows mobile phone are very $$$$$$$.

    I hate sony sleep.

  9. ares says:

Franz, wrong. This actually is very good news - the uiq devices to come now wont have old hardware. And SE is no leaving uiq, thats rubish

  10. makbil says:

If, as the rumors suggested, Paris was based on old archaic hardware platform then I would say this is a wise decision by SE. It’s time they stopped playing around and got back to designing good stuff that made the P series (P900/910) a legend at their time.

  11. hf1344 says:

i think this is not a bad thing. I never liked G702, it had the same specs of G700 in another case (only an “updated” UIQ) , and that strange stylus … I think it wasn`t going to be succesful. Paris was like G900, a copy in another form factor plus a 5 mp camera and a qwerty keyboard.

Its better this way. Instead releasing the same thing over and over again, SE has the chance to upgrade UIQ and hardware (another processor and more ram ) and create a better device

this is what i think :D

  12. Kevin says:

Well, this is for the better. If this means more powerful versions are around the corner, that’s great news.

Though I’m still in love with Shiho.

ppl in mobile review dont like sony ericsson, thats y they are doing that, off to hell with those idiots, let paris and G702 go on :D

  15. Harry says:

“they might still make an appearance in Asia”

If that actually comes trues for Paris with same specs as rumors, then I just might not be able to stop my self from hating SE… :(

Do we deserve a under-speced device??? SE sales in India have been declining and the reason is clearly average speced phones… The only reason SE was able to sell their phones in decent quantities was because of supirior specs… :(

I hope SE have some self-respect and would not take such a decision…

  16. Brian says:

“Seeing how active Nokia is, as far as its SuperNova range is concerned, Sony Ericsson’s reactions seem extraordinarily weak. And this is a pity – the company had and still has all what it takes.” - Mobile-Review Arena

I think Mobile-Review has a point, the Company has it all, why don’t they use it to their advantage and produce Competitive phones to surpass other manufacturers’ products?!

    WAKE UP SE!!!!

  17. pride says:

Yeah. Totally agree with harry. I guess it’s some time SE does something about it’s phone portfolio. Back during MWC 4 months back the only phone that probably wowed all of us was the X1. The rest look pretty average. And going by the leaks on Nokia’s upcoming phones through till 2009, SE’d do something about it. Paris was fine, but BeiBei’s just wasn’t up to scratch i guess. Hopefully following their product cancellation they’ll make changes to their long term plans. Oh welll, let’s just hope those staff at SE hops by USEB and check out our comments. In crude terms, SE SHOULD wake up their ideas. Oh by the way, im a long time SE fan ever since the t610 series made its debut. I’ve seen how SE have grown from strength to strength. But looks like its going backwards. sigh. Bad bad.

Oh im a proud user of k800i! haha.

  18. Chris says:

yay now my g900 can still be semi new still!

ok so i’m a lucky resident of Asia then :) perhaps i’ll just play with paris while waiting for that better specd device to appear..

  24. Brian says:

I think they should also cancel C905, and change its video capture quality XD

  25. nope says:

wow…kinda sad, but i think is fair, p5i is highly anticipated, but it turn out big let down, using old hardware, not so nice design….beibei also doesnt look nice, too much button, n its target market not so clear, coz SE already hv g700 n g900…nway, for me, mobile-review not biased…coz most of ppls (except those extreme SE fanboys) think p5i n beibei kinda bad…most of review also critised it…

  26. SuperInggo says:

if it’s canceled only in Western Europe then it’s it’s not cancelled at all!!

  27. scareface says:

    good news!
paris was too old specswise, beibei had orrible design..

hope for something better to come..

  28. Kucing Garong says:

    @Sony Ericsson
Paris cancellation sounds wise to me. But please remove UIQ and some unnecessary keys from Beibei, add a bit more floral pattern, power it with A2 then release it in small volume as an emotional design phone. It will sell!

  30. Rcheli32 says:

The general belief at esato seems to be “cancelled” is not the right word, rather that the p5i hardware was not impressive enough and so will be superceded by the newer hardware spec and released as p10i.

  31. Michell says:

That’s partly correct. Paris has, however, been cancelled. The phone model will still be developed and released, though, just by a different codename. This is normal procedure after having changed major hardware parts, etc. I personally doubt it’ll be released as P10.

  32. Brian says:

Hope the UPCOMING SE phones will feature VGA video recording or better ;D

  33. Karl says:

I want SE to take UIQ away from symbian and use it for another platform. UIQ on linux or windows would be grate. Cant they do like HTC, change the interface, but still have the same platform as the other companies to ensure software support?

  34. Muhammad-Oli says:

I don’t know why people think Beibei had too many keys. If you actually look at the phone, it has just as many as any other phone available. Sorry it just pisses me off when people obviously haven’t even paid attention to something, then they insult it.

  35. SuperInggo says:

    @Michell
If u think that paris will be released as P10 then why did they use the world “cancel?”

  36. Michell says:

Didn’t I just say I doubt they’ll release it as P10? I think I did. Anyway, “Paris” (hardware) has been cancelled, but the phone itself (P1 successor / next smart phone flagship) is still in the works.

  37. foolmonty says:

s-e did a good job, in a advanced world of mobiles of upcomin touch nokias, htc and samsung ,these fones are simply very good craps.

  38. kurie says:

they deserve to be cancelled! those phone are nothing but POS anyways. those spec are so ancient.

  39. kurie says:

and paris-hilton is the suit name for p5. hahah how ironic.

  41. DingieM says:

    Good thing they dropped Paris.

But do they have new models in the pipeline that replaces Paris?
    Xperia symbian ersion?

  42. Daniel_W says:

Hyped and non-announced several times it turned out to be mediocre, then non-announced again. And now it’s canceled. Wow. SE never fails to fail us. Probably sensible though.

Each product segment aspiring to be taken seriously must define a high end to establish confidence. For example, though most people won’t buy C905 it’ll probably boost sales of cheaper Cybershots, because it makes people confident in the product line.

If Paris would have had a top-notch sibling proving that the business part of SE Symbian are serious stuff, then - but only then - Paris could have been a standard-issue tool of the common collar worker, but on it’s own it’s just a dead end.

Look at the car market, where most brands with any self-esteem have some impossibly expensive top-of-the-line models almost nobody buys. In themselves these top models must be financial disasters. But they do work as sales tools for the lesser models.

Hence, once (if ever) SE gets a groundbreaking business Symbian out the door, then a refurbished Paris-type device could follow en suite, and find a market, but only then.

  43. [...] Right now most of you already know that both Paris and Beibei projects were abandoned by SE. [...]

  44. the z says:

I’ve always been a fan of the P-series phones, so I am a little unhappy that the P5 has been cancelled. I realise that it’s underspecced and not very powerful but, from what I’ve seen, it has some potential: the OS has been improved and what the P1i was lacking is present in the p5 - 5mp camera, GPS, new media player, widgets - the things that I would have loved to have on my P1i. It could have made a descent phone for the transition from the current hardware to the next-gen hardware of, say, the iPhone. I guess I’ll stick with my P1i until 2009.

The features the P5 would have had are better than what the iPhone and many other rivals offer, although, yet again, the hardware’s low power does lower its capabilities. S-E are not actually far off beating the iPhone and similar devices, if they follow on from their development of the P5. S-E simply need to up the screen size, put in some more powerful hardware and use UIQ 4 with a new Symbian version and they would have their perfect iPhone/N96/W420-beater.

I hope that this is the end of S-E trying to squeeze out every last little drop out of their old ARM9-based hardware and moved on.
