More leaked pictures of Xperia U (Kumquat)

February 20th, 2012 by Nevin John Pezhamattom

Expected to be announced in the MWC 2012, Xperia U (kumquat) is rumored to be a smaller version of the Xperia S, packing a 1GHz dual-core processor, 3.5-inch (480 x 854) display and a 5MP rear camera.

Now we have more pictures of the phone and this time it’s a sort of comparison with the bigger sibling, the Xperia S. The main difference we noticed is that the Xperia U has a removable battery where as the Xperia S has a sealed one. Everything else looks the same as Xperia S. Just see it yourself.

Sony develops Low-power LSIs for wireless communications with data transfer speeds of 6.3 Gb/s

February 20th, 2012 by Nevin John Pezhamattom

Sony Corporation and National University Corporation, Tokyo Institute of Technology have jointly developed a RF LSI and a baseband LSI that enables millimeter-wave wireless data transfer at the world’s fastest rate of 6.3 Gb/s.

Due to the enhancements in the sound, music and video contents for TVs, mobile devices and all the other network oriented devices, the need for enhancement of wireless communication speeds became essential. The shortage of frequencies under 6GHz became a critical issue. Keeping all this in mind, the Tokyo Institute of Technology and Sony have jointly developed a data transfer technology that realizes both high-speed and low-power data transfer between mobile devices. This new technology will bring about revolutionary changes in data transferring by enabling the users to enjoy a higher date transfer rate; that is, they will be able to send and receive data at blistering speeds on their mobile devices without the need for cable connections. Also, the new technology can make the uncompressed high-quality video streaming from a mobile device to a display hassle free.

Block diagram of the jointly developed system

Sony expects to release their mobile devices like smartphones, tablets etc on this technology very soon and hence give their customers a very joyful, seamless media experience on their Sony products.

Sony Xperia S vs Galaxy S II, Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Razr

February 16th, 2012 by Nevin John Pezhamattom

We have a couple of videos of the comparison of the new Xperia S with Samsung Galxy S II, Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Razr. The tests include the browsing speed and the boot time. There is also a footage of the HD screen of Xperia S.

Xperia S clearly won the boot time test though the phones were not switched on simultaneously and Xperia S was the last to get switched on.

On the browsing part, the phone disappointed a bit but it’s not a big deal since there’s only short delays and the phone is running on gingerbread where as the main competitor, Galaxy Nexus is on ICS .

On the display part Xperia S packs the same 720 x 1280 pixels as Nexus but the screen is sharper because it’s 4.3 inches compared to 4.65 inches. (Xperia S has 342 ppi pixel density and Nexus has 316 ppi pixel density). Galaxy S II and Motorola Razr packs a 480×800 and 540×960 displays respectively. Take a look at the videos.
