Hope you have already come across the newly announced smartphones from Sony; Xperia P and Xperia U. Sony mentioned that the phones would be launched by Q2 2012 but there was no information about the exact dates.
Now, Sony Mobile France has shed some light on the release dates of the two new smart phones. The models will hit France in the middle of May. They had something to tell about the pricing as well. Xperia P will cost approximately €420 and Xperia U will get a price tag of €260.

The 2012 Xperia smartphones (Xperia S, Xperia P, Xperia U) will use an entirely different headset standard compared to the older Xperia phones (2010/2011 models). It is really a disappointment that the 2011 Xperia phones don’t support most of the alien headsets. They used the OMTP standard for the 3.5mm jack which is not common.
The new 2012 Xperia models will have a 3.5mm jack that uses the CTIA standard and not the OMTP standard which was used earlier. The CTIA standard is more common and is the one adopted by Apple iOS devices. So, you can connect almost all the foreign headsets to your 2012 smartphone and enjoy your favourite music or movie.
The good thing is that you are welcomed to an arena of a variety of accessories for your Sony smart phone but then older headsets that can currently be used with 2011 Xperia devices will not be compatible with the new Xperia phones.

Following on the 4.0.2.A.0.69 update for Xperia arc S and Xperia arc, it seems the rest of the 2011 Xperias will also get the update.
4.0.2.A.0.69 is now certified by PTCRB for Xperia neo, Xperia pro, Xperia ray, Live with Walkman, Xperia active and Xperia mini pro. The firmware is not yet certified for Xperia mini and Xperia neo V but there is no reason why they shouldn’t recieve the update. So it’s just a matter of time (Remember Xperia arc s and arc got the certification a week earlier).

EDK 2.0 comes with some exciting new features. The package includes an updated version of Timescape API; the interface used by Timescape to generate data displayed for the app, an updated version of the Event stream (event engine used to create a list of events displayed in Timescape). Also, if you’re keen in developing extensions for timescape, you now have the option to add actions to react to social media events, such as “liking” a post or replying to a comment to a picture you’ve posted. EDK 2.0 also includes the Smart Extras emulator.

Following up the alpha ROM release Sony released a ICS beta ROM for the public to try out. You must have an Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ neo V or Xperia™ ray, running the latest Xperia™ software release (which is 4.0.2.A.0.42) to try this ROM. Also the phone must be bootloader unlocked.
The beta ROM now released includes:
- Updated UI - Includes features in the new Xperia S.
- Impressive Lockscreen – While listening to music you can control the music player without unlocking the phone by using the music control icons on the lock screen.
- Connectivity turned on – Unlike the alpha ROM, the GSM modem and FM radio are turned on.
- Updated email client – Impressive UI and hassle less email management.
- Quick dial – Making phone calls is easier! See the video below.
How to Download and install
Follow the instructions below to download and install the beta ROM. Please note that it only works with Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ neo V and Xperia™ ray.
- Make sure your phone is running the latest software release, which is build number 4.0.2.A.0.42. If you can’t upgrade to this build number, it is not possible to try the Ice Cream Sandwich beta ROM for Xperia™ phones.
- Go to unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com and unlock the boot loader of your phone. To do this, you must read through and agree to all the legal and warranty conditions that apply.
- Download the Ice Cream Sandwich beta ROM for Xperia™ arc S, the Ice Cream Sandwich beta ROM for Xperia™ neo V or the Ice Cream Sandwich beta ROM for Xperia™ ray depending on your phone model.
- Extract the downloaded zip file to your Android Fastboot directory. For example: ..\android-sdk\fastboot\Xperia_arcS_ICS_beta.
- Open a command prompt and go to your Fastboot directory: ..\android-sdk\fastboot\
- Flash the three beta ROM files one at a time using Fastboot. Use these three commands (replace the folder name if you are using Xperia™ neo V or Xperia™ ray):
• fastboot flash boot ..\Fastboot\Xperia_arcS_ICS_beta\boot.img
• fastboot flash userdata ..\Fastboot\Xperia_arcS_ICS_beta\userdata.img
• fastboot flash system ..\Fastboot\Xperia_arcS_ICS_beta\system.img
- Once done, please reboot your phone.
