Sony announced its next-generation back-illuminated CMOS image sensor. With this new image sensor they promise further enhancement in image quality, superior functionalities and a more compact size that will lead to an enhanced camera. This development is aimed at the highly complicated smartphone market. With the advent of this new sensors Sony hopes to boost their smartphone sales and there is no doubt they will achieve it.
As the first step, Sony has developed a model with built-in signal processing functionality. Samples will be shipped from March, 2012. Models have been developed with Sony’s unique RGBW Coding function, which facilitates low noise, high quality image capture even in low light condition, and HDR (High Dynamic Range) Movie function, for excellent color management in extremely bright light conditions.
What’s new:
- Large-scale signal processing circuits required for higher image quality and better functionality are built-in.
- More compact image sensor chip size.
- Even higher image quality of the pixel section by adopting manufacturing processes specialized for superior image quality.
- Faster speeds and lower power consumption by adopting the leading process for the circuit section.
Conceptual diagram of the sensor:

RGBW Coding function
“RGBW Coding” function which adds W (White) pixels to the conventional range of RGB (Red-Green-Blue) pixels has realized higher sensitivity, enabling high-quality shooting with low noise even in dark indoor or night settings.

We have been hearing a lot about ST25i Kumquat these days and details regarding this phone emerges each day. Now there is another reason to believe its existence in the Sony labs. The information is from the Indonesian Postel website (the site represents the Indonesian Telecoms Regulatory body). In the list, we see a mysterious entry ‘Sony Ericsson Xperia U ST25i‘. If it was before the official announcement of Xperia S that this news emerged, I wouldn’t have bothered to lend my eyes on this piece of information because no companies bother to name their product like this!

It’s funny but this is going to be real:
In the Shop:
‘Hey, I want an S.’
‘A what?!’
‘Yeah, S.’
‘Oh, I get it, What about U? It’s cheaper.’
‘U?!’
‘Yeah U, the dual core thing with a downgraded camera. And we have more coming in a couple of months like the Q, R, T etc.‘
I don’t know how many more alphabets are reserved by Sony! The sales may be a tough job for Sony Ericsson but it seems the smartphone naming procedure is an extremely easy job!

Sony Ericsson has released only two phones running on Windows platform; the Xperia X1 and X2 (in 2010). Since then, it was like the company abandoned their projects on Windows Phones. In March 2011 news emerged from unofficial sources that Sony Ericsson would release the next set of Windows phones. There were also pictures of the prototype version of the phone leaked. Anyway, there are no phones released till date. Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson also commented on these rumors. They didn’t make an official statement in their blogs. In an interview to a news channel here in India, a Sony Ericsson Executive mentioned that there are no plans to release a Windows phone in the near future even though they have not abandoned Windows development.
Sony Ericsson seems highly interested on developing on Android platform and they do believe that their sales highly depend on android phones:
“…throughout 2011 we’ve shifted our business from feature phones to smartphones, and our Android-based smartphone sales in the quarter increased by 65% year-on-year.“
-Bert Nordberg, President and CEO of Sony Ericsson
Anyway, pictures keep coming. Now we have the recent set of pictures that shows a Windows phone from Sony Ericsson. It’s a QWERTY phone running on WP7 or WP 7.5.

First we had the Xperia arc, then its compact version; the Xperia ray. Now we have the Xperia S and there is a compact version for Xperia S too? The recent picture of the rumored ST25i Kumquat seems to take this honor.
Details of Kumquat (ST25)
1GHz dual-core processor
3.5-inch Reality display with Bravia Engine
5MP camera with Exmor R, 720p HD video recording
Android Gingerbread (Ice Cream Sandwich update later)

As more and more pictures of the phone appears in the wild, we are forced to believe its existence and an official announcement at MWC 2012.

Sony Ericsson published the financial summary for the fourth quarter and the full year 2011. Sadly, the results show extremly bad performance when compared to the other giants in the market.
Reading through the report and analyzing it we understand that the company sold 43.1 million phones in 2010 but the sales dipped to 34.4 million phones in 2011. The sales ended with a net revenue of €1,528 million in Q4 2010 but the case was different last year; ie the sales ended with a net revenue of only €1288 million in Q4 2011, a 16% drop versus Q4 2010. Drastically, the company ended the year with a net loss of €247 million.
The most appropriate person to comment on this disappointing performance of the company would be Bert Nordberg, President and CEO of Sony Ericsson. I’ll post his comment:
“Our fourth quarter results reflected intense competition, unfavorable macroeconomic conditions and the effects of a natural disaster in Thailand this quarter. We are aligning our business to drive profitability and to meet customer needs. In spite of these challenges, throughout 2011 we’ve shifted our business from feature phones to smartphones, and our Android-based smartphone sales in the quarter increased by 65% year-on-year. The Xperia portfolio, including the recently announced Xperia NXT series, will serve as a cornerstone of our smartphone lineup in 2012″
He blames the intense competition, unfavorable economic conditions and floods in Thailand as the reasons for the company’s loss. He also confirms that the company will be focusing on to Androids in the coming year and hopes that would boost the sales.
Also, Sony’s reputation in the global market is a blessing and lets see how they handle the smartphone section (Sony Mobile Communications) in 2012.

Interested in knowing the prices and launch dates of all the phones in 2012 Xperia lineup?! The gsmarena team got a scoop on the unannounced smartphone prices and launch dates. They say the information was leaked through Sony’s Sales report in India. The prices and dates are for the Indian market but there is no reason why it won’t be the same for the rest of the world. The prices were in INR but they managed to convert it into Euro.
Some of the phones mentioned are familiar to us, like the ST25i Kumquat, LT22i Nypon, MT27i Pepper and ST21 Tapioca but the rest of the phones are unfamiliar; there had not been any information available regarding them in the past.
Prices and Launch dates:
The majority of them will be launched in MWC 2012.

LT22i Nypon is rumoured to have a qHD (540 x 960) resolution display, a ST Ericsson NovaThor U8500 chipset with 1GHz processor and ARM Mali-400 MP GPU. Expect the official announcement of the phone in the MWC 2012.
.
Nypon scored 24 on average in the test; which is pretty decent. The phone is expected to run on Android Gingerbread (2.3.7).

Rumored to be the successor of Xperia neo, MT27i (Pepper) has an interesting spec sheet that includes a 1GHz dual-core processor, a 3.7-inch (480×854) display, 5MP camera and a sealed battery. Earlier when its details first appeared in the wild, there were proofs for the phone will have a ST-Ericsson chipset.
Now we have more data to believe that such a phone exists. This time it’s a benchmark result. From the benchmark it’s obvious that the phone has an ARM Mali-400 MP GPU. This is the GPU used in ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor family of chipsets, ie for U5500, U8500 and U9500. It also says the phone runs on Android 2.3.7.

Sony Xperia S is the first android phone with a 12MP rear camera. For that matter, Sony fans around the world is eager to know what the Xperia S’s rear shooter can deliver. Finally, some sample photos emerge. Sadly, the images does not cope with the fact that it’s from a 12MP camera; they appear grainy. Anyway, it is a bit of a relief that the photos (3.5MB average size) are not so over compressed as in the 2011 Xperias.
The phone has not been released yet and Sony confirms its availability by March 2012. So, there is a 2 months time for the company to rethink and fine tune the camera. It’s evident that the hardware is capable (Sony has the best cameras in the market) but the software needs some minor tweaking.
