No X2 for the UK?

The launch of the X2 in the UK has had a major setback today with the news that Vodafone, which had exclusive rights to the X2 in Britain, will be dropping the handset from their portfolio. Vodafone have cited ‘delays in testing’ as the reason behind their decision. A Vodafone spokesperson infored IT PRO that the network no longer had plans to offer the device:

The delivery date of the device, with Windows 6.5, slipped pre-Christmas due to a series of technical issues and we have taken the decision not to go ahead with the launch as it no longer fits with our planned portfolio.

This doesn’t affect X2 sales in other countries of course although it will be interesting to see whether Vodafone’s other networks around the world join their British counterparts. It’s unclear yet as to whether other British networks will stock the X2 in light of Vodafone’s move. Sony Ericsson has something of a history of delays in bringing handsets to market and this latest delay will only cement that less than desirable reputation. With the X10 set for release within the next couple of months many may be wondering whether that too will go on sale in time.
