No More Android Updates For X10 (Updated)

With the excitement over the Xperia arc it’s been easy to forget the handset that preceded it, the X10. Sadly it too is in the news today, I say sadly because the news isn’t good.

Sony Ericsson have confirmed, via Twitter, that the X10 family of handsets i.e. the X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro have reached the end of their Android upgrade cycle. In other words they won’t be getting Froyo or any other Android upgrade for that matter. The handsets will still be upgraded and supported, but any upgrades will come from Sony Ericsson so probably more in the line of a minor tweak here and a minor tweak there.

Justifying the decision Sony Ericsson used a line that may not strike a happy note with owners of those handsets, they are saying that the Eclair update that has already been released is actually better than Froyo.

UPDATE: Sony Ericsson have issued a statement on the matter, saying that the tweet, due to the character limitations imposed by Twitter, was not fully representative of their position. Here’s their statement in full:

We believe that the current Xperia range on Android 2.1 coupled with Sony Ericsson’s proprietary upgrades and unique hardware delivers a user experience that is on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of Android 2.2.

We’re planning another upgrade to bring new features (such as for example multi-touch for Xperia X10) to the current family of Xperia™ smartphones in Q1 2011.

Our priority right now is to keep enhancing the user experience of the existing products through coming updates and to deliver a fantastic range of smartphones in 2011 that are all on the latest possible version of Android – that is a target we are determined to hit.

Oh damn.. But they didn’t mention the X8… maybe they still upgrade the X8

  2. Flo95 says:

Just one thing: bye bye se.

That’t not right, the devices, at least the X10, are supporting Froyo, so they should at least give us a Froyo update to have things like JIT and Apps2SD.

I really like Sony Ericsson, but I want a device which is up to date (more or less. In this case 2.2 would be enough) and not behind. I think a lot of users, including me, will think more about buying a phone from an other brand next time than we did when we bought the X10.

It’s a great device, but the software doesn’t use it’s reservs. With Froyo we’d get a faster device etc. I hope you understand what I mean.

Hopefully will the people from se change their mind and update it or otherwise they’ll use a lot of customers.

    Hi all,.
First – As a clarification regarding the current Xperia products – We are planning another upgrade to bring new features (such as for example multi-touch for Xperia X10) to the current family of Xperia™ smartphones in Q1 2011. However, at this stage those plans do not include updating the underlying Android version.
This decision is based on that we believe that with the current hardware platform an overhaul of the underlying core OS wouldn’t drastically improve the user experience. We believe that the current Xperia range on Android 2.1 coupled with our proprietary upgrades and unique hardware delivers a user experience that is on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of Android 2.2.

I think the only thing X10 users are really missing due to be stuck on Eclair is Apps2SD and Wi-Fi tethering. If your phone performs well on 2.1, why would you need 2.2+ (except for the 2 reasons given)?

  4. Flo95 says:

It performs well, but I want Apps2SD.

For Wi-Fi tether we can use the app from Barnacle.

  5. Manny says:

Well the apps2sd I have on my phone is enough, so for me I’m not bothered about it much tbh :) and also on the plus side we are getting some kind of MT soon :)

  6. KkSCchaos says:

    About MT:

    X10 will get dual touch.

X10 Mini Pro appears to have hardware to support it (more than X10 apparently, after talking to someone who got me to preform a “basic” test), dare I say it is the same for X10 Mini’s as well. Your guess is as good as mine on X8 (I simply dont know).

But have SE announced whether the X8 or the Mini’s will get it? Not one word as far as I am aware.

After this blow today, I wouldnt be too sure whether they will implement it, or not.

  7. Manny says:

Well Its a definite for X10, i know.. but I’ve wrote to them on twitter about Mini/Pro just awaiting a reply..

  8. photographer says:

What a great support from SE! So great. You buy their €500 X10 phone in April 2010 and then you get screwed 10 months later! Even my june 2009 HTC Magic runs 2.2.

    Peak times.

  10. Theonewithideas says:

…and you would never buy a new device from SE anymore… They announced Arc with new version of Android, right?

  11. mr.megi says:

Thats why i dont want a Android device from SE

they did, but what, after some time, when android x.y comes out, they won’t give it for their phones.

or should i say this way, they don’t think to much for old users!

what, according to them,”look we have new phone to give you, which runs latest ver. forget your “old” phone” i should get a new phone every time when new version of android comes out.

but let’s make it clear one thing, i would understood if they say, your “old” device isn’t capable to run latest android OS. i would say, ok, it can’t run it, i will have to live with it.

but if you know it can run it(i don’t know, but i believe)… no excuse..

    and one thing

    ….

hm, did someone even test it, i mean compare it? :)

    what are those upgrades?

As a result of this news..I’ve found a buyer for my brand new X10 and just placed an order for HTC Desire HD. Sad…:censored:

    I’M SO GLADD..!!!!
That I ‘ve already sold my Mini Pro before this news published :D

  15. Flo95 says:

    Lucky you.

Why didn’t they give out that news at the beginning of October? Then I’d have a Desire HD, too. (I think)

Lol, as if Sony Ericsson ever listen to their consumers or take notice of petitions.

  17. razvan_06 says:

They already said there won’t be anymore updates for the Xperia X10 series..and X8 afaik

I saw a discussion on SE official fb page about how bad is it that there won’t be android updates for X10 family anymore. I asked what would they get with the Android update.

    noone replied

and now seriously, what would it change, since I really don’t know? :newhere:

  20. Flo95 says:

    Appes2SD and a faster phone.

Not just JIT, the internal memory is faster too. The Quadrant test runs much faster on a X10 with the 2.21 custom rom than on a stock 2.1 X10 with JIT V2.

  21. Meikii says:

Does the updated X10 mini pro get 16m truecolor or is it still 65k?

  22. bigyinn72 says:

I’ll probably get flamed for this, but for your average smart phone user, they dont care about what version of OS it runs, as long as it works and does what they want it to!

Sure i’d like 2.2, but is it REALLY going to make much of a difference to the handset? Probably nothing massive.

Im quite happy with my X10i and I cant be bothered with this arms race in OS’s.

Its the best SE handset i’ve had since my K800 in terms of reliability. Sure its a shame the handset is 2 versions of Android behind other similarly aged handsets, but its hardly the end of the world.

Oh and when did a Facebook petition ever achieve ANYTHING?

  23. najodleglejszy says:

bigyinn, I totally agree with you :)
