Exclusive: Sony Ericsson’s T610 remake

The T610 was one of Sony Ericsson’s first smash hits, and many will argue that this single phone model marked a turning point for the company. Five years after its release, it looks like Sony Ericsson is about ready with a remake of this ever-popular handset.

We don’t have a final product name on this one - yet - but its codename is Remi. Personally, I like “New T610″ better, so I’ll just call it that…

The new T610 is a slim candy bar phone based on the W890 hardware platform. This means we’re looking at a phone with a waistline at about 10 millimetres, and it will probably end up at 10.5 centimetres in length, and 4.7 centimetres in width, but my assumptions are based solely on W890’s dimensions. Parts of the body are apparently aluminium, which seems rather nice, and much T610-like as well.

So… specifications. It’s running the A2 software platform, like the W890 and many others, and it’s an HSDPA-enabled phone. The camera on the back is a 3.2 mega pixel one, unfortunately only with fixed focus.

Can’t think of anything more at the moment, but if you’ve got a question, feel free to leave a comment, and hopefully I’ll be able to answer it :-) Please keep in mind though that this is basically a non-branded W890, so most questions about features can be answered by looking at the W890’s features.

  1. Brian says:

Why “The New T610″ ? Why not “The New W890″ ?

  2. mustafabay says:

A bigger screen would be nice but not much else really.

  3. baine says:

Yea.. it’s pretty obvious that its the W890 in a “new T610″ casing.. The true new T610 should be as, if not more, ground breaking as the old T610. What on earth is SE thinking these days.. Worst still, fixed focus?

Why “The New T610″ ? Why not “The New W890″ ?

Because it’s not a Walkman phone?
Besides, the W890 isn’t really that old.

  5. Flamman says:

Would have been fun with a GPS, is that included?

  6. Michell says:

    I don’t think there’s a GPS unit in it.

  7. Cute Girl says:

Do you think that it will be offered in a precious gold like version?

  8. Nice one, I like it, just new T610 :) - still I have one at home. What about date of announcement? What do you think Michell?

  9. Waco says:

I don’t really get the point of this phone, there are plenty of mobiles like this… In my opinion SE should announce fewer phones with bigger HW differencies, not just change the image of announced phone and we’ve got a new handset. However, if SE can beat other brands this way, I don’t care…

  10. scareface says:

    mhmm
nothing really particular.. I prefer the W890

waiting for some news about w960 successor…

  11. zazoop says:

Sony Ericsson has amounts of phones similar to T610, so that’s not a truth T610 successor.

  12. N96 says:

i love the new t610 look great

  13. Dominick says:

    I don’t like it, too.
But I don’t really care, as long as they bring out a few decent devices each year and they can compete with other brands.

  14. Denis says:

Is that a little camera at the front? Video conferencing?

  15. Michell says:

    Jiří Havrlant,
Yeah, I know when it’ll be announced, but am not allowed to tell at the moment. It won’t be too long though.

  16. Janko @ TB says:

I really too believe it´s rather a remake of the W890i in a new design than a redesigned T610. The keyboards and the view on the side of this mobile device shows similarity to the W890i not to the T610… but beside this: it´s ugly. Really. ;)

  17. OK, thank’s Michell. My opinion: the august about 10th should be announcement date.

  18. karun says:

It looks pretty nice :) pretty sleek!

  19. cliosguy says:

wasnt the T650 the new T610? at least i saw it that way…

  20. Kevin says:

Seems to me that while Remi is channeling parts of the T610 (but so did the T650), it is not a T610 remake in the strictest sense.  SE may market it as a T610 successor, which is great as far as advertising goes since it will likely hook consumers who bought and loved that phone.

But it seems to be “just” another T-series phone, with elements of T-series phones gone by.  I was going to say that it is likely a T650 successor, but the lack of AF makes me question this.

    Still, it’s a nice-looking phone.

  21. Chris S says:

this is the ericsson t690 im pretty sure, the t610 was a classic haha i just sold one for $50 it’s crazy despite this phones age the features are stil pretty good…..but i love the brushed aluminum look of this phone and the keypad seems to be nothing else like it :D

  22. Drasko says:

It confirm the one dreadfully fact: People need in a first step the  phone! Because of that in the last 10 years nothing big happened. If you mean that the camera and gps are something new  you are wrong, only the mobile phone is what happened big!
    The wheel stay round!

  23. [...] Sony Ericsson is to launch a successor to its classic T610 series phone, there is no official model number available for the handset yet but we do know its code name as ”REMI”The new T610 is a slim candy bar phone based on the W890 hardware platform. This means we’re looking at  at about 10 millimetres, and it will probably end up at 10.5 centimetres in length, and 4.7 centimetres in width. 36. Girish says:

I am using T610 since 2003 and would like to buy a new model with bigger megapixel camera with auto focus and all other features similar to T610. Unfortunately T610 & T650 have poor legibility under direct sunlight. So I was hoping SE will come out with higher/better version than T650 with this defect removed. Is there anything in offing?

  37. Michael Adhi says:

Umm, nice, but I thought that the T650 was the T610 successor? Why would Sony Ericsson brings back something that already has a successor? My take on this is that, this new phone will be slotted below the T650.
