Sony Ericsson Windows Phone: More photos leaked

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Sony Ericsson has released only two phones running on Windows platform; the Xperia X1 and X2 (in 2010). Since then, it was like the company abandoned their projects on Windows Phones. In March 2011 news emerged from unofficial sources that Sony Ericsson would release the next set of Windows phones. There were also pictures of the prototype version of the phone leaked. Anyway, there are no phones released till date. Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson also commented on these rumors. They didn’t make an official statement in their blogs. In an interview to a news channel here in India, a Sony Ericsson Executive mentioned that there are no plans to release a Windows phone in the near future even though they have not abandoned Windows development.

Sony Ericsson seems highly interested on developing on Android platform and they do believe that their sales highly depend on android phones:

“…throughout 2011 we’ve shifted our business from feature phones to smartphones, and our Android-based smartphone sales in the quarter increased by 65% year-on-year.

-Bert Nordberg, President and CEO of Sony Ericsson

Anyway, pictures keep coming. Now we have the recent set of pictures that shows a Windows phone from Sony Ericsson. It’s a QWERTY phone running on WP7 or WP 7.5.

Sony Ericsson’s OS Choice: Just Pick One!

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

We’ve been running  a poll on which OS Sony Ericsson should drop for some time now and I thought it was about time to offer some comments on it. Let me start by explaining a little about why we put that poll up.

A Little Fish Is Better Than None

Sony Ericsson, as things currently stand, are supporting three separate mobile operating systems for their smartphone range; Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile. That’s a lot for any mobile manufacturer to support let alone one that has been through the financial troubles Sony Ericsson has not to mention the fact that Sony Ericsson isn’t sitting upon the same level of market share or mind share around the world as some of the larger brands. So why do they do it?

Ostensibly it’s to keep their fingers in as many pies as possible. It’s pretty starightforward logic that the more choices you offer the more market segements you cover. In other words if you cast a bigger net chances are you’ll catch more fish. The problem with this logic though is that Sony Ericsson just don’t seem to have the resources to pull it off well. To continue the net analogy, their big net has holes in it. In basic terms they have been releasing handsets that are, at best behind the curve, and at worst buggy and cumbersome to use.

Symbian: The Dinosaur In The Room

The general consensus, and reflected in our poll, is that Symbian is the weak link. It’s a platform most closely associated with Nokia rather than Sony Ericsson, but more than that, it’s a platform that is more associated with how smartphones were three or four years ago. That image means that right from the get go many have a certain perception of a Symbian smartphone. Add in shortcomings like the lack of any significant app store or the rather clunky unappealing UI and it’s not exactly a recipe for success.

Windows Mobile: The Also Ran (And Might Again)

Windows Mobile took a bit of a hit in our poll too, with 37% of respondents saying Sony Ericsson should ditch it. That’s a long way behind the 51% who gave Symbian the thumbs down, but still a very significant share of the vote. To be fair here Sony Ericsson does look to have called time on Windows Mobile, but that’s probably more of a case of them being forced to as it’s being retired by Microsoft themselves. Sony Ericsson didn’t have much success with their Windows Mobile products, but then in an age where smartphones are increasingly being bought by image and ease of use centric consumers rather than business users where they ever really in the running?

Android: The Way Forward

Then we come to Android, which just 12% of respondents say Sony Ericsson should ditch. Looking at it another way that’s a support level of 88%. Yet Sony Ericsson has placed itself firmly behind the curve on Android releasing a plethora of products running Android 1.6 with an upgrade to 2.1 on the cards. Android 2.2 is already out and 3.0 is just around the corner. Why the delay? Most likely the insistence upon using their own custom UI e.g. Timescape and Mediascape. That’s not to say those things don’t add value to the proposition, but the benefits are surely outweighed if it means that Sony Ericsson’s customers are left behind in terms of core functionality that the latest Android iterations would bring?

MOAR Android!

So where does all of this leave us? The aspect that is most striking is the level of support for Android and consequently the lack of support for Symbian. It seems fairly obvious to the casual observer that Sony Ericsson should call it a day on what is a rather tired old platform that even Nokia are floundering a bit with these days. Instead Sony Ericsson could divert those resources into Android and push itself to the fore of what has proven to be a platform capable of reviving flagging fortunes e.g. Motorola as well as establishing a solid mind share amongst consumers e.g. HTC. With Windows Phone 7 about to launch and Sony Ericsson looking to support that too it seems more sensible for a relatively small manufacturer to support the perennialy popular Android platform, whilst also hedging a bet on the new kid that is Windows Phone 7. Symbian has neither of those qualities at the moment and looks to be doing little more than gobbling up resource better spent elsewhere.

In short, out with the old and in with the new.

Rumour: 1st Win Phone 7 Handset ‘Julie’

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Sony Ericcson are allegedly prepping a new touchscreen handset for launch this year and it looks like it could be the manufacturer’s first Windows Phone 7. Codenamed ‘Julie’ the handset is said to sport a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen similar to that of their current flagship, the X10. However, there are some notable differences between Julie and the X10, not the least of which is that it will supposedly be running Windows Phone 7. Sony Ericsson have hopefully been listening to feedback garnered from the X10 because the rumour has it that Julie will feature multi-touch support. There is also a slide out QWERTY keyboard and the now seemingly obligatory 1 GHz Snapdragon onboard. Of course it is very important to stress that this all rumour at this point so please do make sure you stock up on salt for the time being, but here is an interesting thought to leave you thinking about; if Julie is real and is running Windows Phone 7 then it will have support for Xbox Live built in too, a platform that is a director competitor to Sony’s Playstation Network …

No X2 for the UK?

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

The launch of the X2 in the UK has had a major setback today with the news that Vodafone, which had exclusive rights to the X2 in Britain, will be dropping the handset from their portfolio. Vodafone have cited ‘delays in testing’ as the reason behind their decision. A Vodafone spokesperson infored IT PRO that the network no longer had plans to offer the device:

The delivery date of the device, with Windows 6.5, slipped pre-Christmas due to a series of technical issues and we have taken the decision not to go ahead with the launch as it no longer fits with our planned portfolio.

This doesn’t affect X2 sales in other countries of course although it will be interesting to see whether Vodafone’s other networks around the world join their British counterparts. It’s unclear yet as to whether other British networks will stock the X2 in light of Vodafone’s move. Sony Ericsson has something of a history of delays in bringing handsets to market and this latest delay will only cement that less than desirable reputation. With the X10 set for release within the next couple of months many may be wondering whether that too will go on sale in time.

Friday, March 13th, 2009

x1_korea_1

Sony Ericsson today announced the launch its business in Korea. Sony Ericsson will cooperate with SK Telecom, who will be carrying the XPERIA X1 smartphone. SK Telecom, who will be the distributor of the phone, has decided to customize the X1 with the local Korean customers in mind. This means that there’ll be three new panels – “My smart panel”, “DAUM panel” and “My PC panel” – in addition to the regular panels.

The “My smart panel” is an Internet service for smartphones developer by SK Telefom, and it provides users access to online services, such as e-mail, Messenger and Internet browsing. The “DAUM panel” is a panel by Sony Ericsson that provides users with instant access to services found on the DAUM portal, including e-mail, web search and T-story. The last of the three panels, “My PC panel” will allow users to use media services by connecting the handset to the content and software of a PC through WiBro.

“Our vision for the Xperia X1 is to deliver a seamless blend of mobile web communication and multimedia entertainment in a distinctive stylish design,” said Hirokazu Ishizuka, Corporate Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific Region of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications.  ”Customised panel interface on the Xperia X1 means that our customers will be able to live their lives to the fullest by enjoying the premium experience of energised communications in their own way.”

“We are very excited to establish Sony Ericsson’s presence in Korea and firmly believe that we have the right product to offer to Korean consumers,” said Hirokazu Ishizuka, Corporate Vice President and Head of the Asia Pacific region.  ”Working closely with our strategic partner, SK Telecom, we will build the Sony Ericsson brand awareness and increase our mindshare within the marketplace.”

“Xperia X1 is truly a personalized phone which offers smart-phone users an innovative yet premium mobile multimedia experience,” said Youn-hee Han, Head of Sony Ericsson Korea. “Worldwide, it is the first time that the Xperia X1 has been customized with four panels to suit a local market needs, and it is a clear indication of Sony Ericsson’s commitment to the market.”

“As the strategic partner for Xperia X1, we are honoured to support the launch of Sony Ericsson in Korea, and to mark this milestone in the local telecommunications industry. With its full touch, unique customizable panel interface, we believe Xperia X1 will prove to be popular with sophisticated Korean mobile phone users,” said Joon Dong Bae, Executive Vice President of SK Telecom.

The Korean X1 will enter the market with a 4 GB MicroSD card, preloaded with the Spiderman 3 movie. The first 1,000 customers to buy the X1 will also get their names engraved on their X1, as well as a luxurious leather phone case – all for free.

Sony Ericsson has set up quite a cool website for Korean X1 owners – you can find it at www.xperia.co.kr.

Sony Ericsson updates Windows Mobile Panels SDK, adds OpenGL ES support

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Just a few days ago, Sony Ericsson updated its Windows Mobile panels SDK to version 1.0.5 (still a beta, though). The updated version now adds support for the brilliant OpenGL ES, which means the XPERIA panels can now be hardware accelerated. The X1 has a very powerful graphics processor, and I can’t wait to see the results of this new release.

You can read a lot more about the new release over at Sony Ericsson’s Developer World, where you can also download it for free, so you can start developing panels for the X1. Alternatively, you can press this link, and we’ll hook you up the triple W-way!

We’ve tried YouTube on the X1

x1_youtube_1

The XPERIA panels is one of the key selling points of the X1, and it’s one of the features I love the most about my X1. The panels make it easier for me to do tasks on my phone, and especially the Facebook  and YouTube panels are cool, if you’re into that kind of stuff. In this post I’ll talk about the YouTube panel, which – when it comes down to it – is hardly a panel.

In order to get things moving, you’ll need an X1 (obviously), the YouTube application for your device (originally for the HTC Touch HD) and of course the YouTube panel itself. You can find the YouTube application for the X1 right here, and the panel is available here. Install the application first, and the panel after that. You might also need to run this installation file, if the panel is not working. If you’re using a non-English X1, you’ll have to check the comments below for a work-around.

OK – now you’re ready to watch YouTube videos on your X1! You will of course have to activate the panel from the panel settings menu, but assuming you’ve already taken care of that, I’ll move right along and start talking about the application / panel. (more…)
