K660 review by Mobile-Review

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Mobile-Review.com has yet again reviewed a Sony Ericsson phone and this time it is the K660, which is being marketed as a web phone for the youth. I liked this review of K660 and I think Eldar makes some good points along the long lines of text, but I also disagree with some of his sayings – like the one, where he says no K6xx phones have been successful. In Denmark both the K600 and K610 has been very popular and helped kick-starting 3G. Anyhow, here’s the link for the review. Enjoy!

New frontpage design

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

SE seems to be very busy redesigning their complete web appeareance. After the structure change and the press page relaunch (USEB told you about that earlier here and here), they now have also a spanking new and all fresh frontpage, as you can see at the pic below:

New design at Sony Ericsson press site

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

OK, I admit. You’ve got to be a real hardcore Sony Ericsson fanatic to spot this, however I did. Sony Ericsson has updated its web design at the press site. A change that was well needed, if you ask me. It simply didn’t fit the new style of Sony Ericsson.

Anyway, browsing press material is now much easier and it generally just looks better. Have a look for yourself! There are still some minor problems, but I’m guessing they’ll be fixed soon.

Why are UIQ 3 downloads so slow?

Monday, December 10th, 2007

[UPDATED] This have really been a problem, that has been bugging me for a long time. UIQ 3 download speeds are absolutely ridiculous – here’s an example. I’ve got a 2 Mbps Internet connection at home and download speeds are about 210 KB/s. However when downloading with my P990, the download speed is only about 3 KB/s – that’s 70 times lower than normal speed! I’ve been trying to ask a few people, who knows a lot about UIQ, but nobody has been able to give me an answer. Maybe I’ll try to contact UIQ and see what they have to say. I have now contacted UIQ.

In the mean time, I’d like to ask you guys if you’ve experienced this, too, and what phone you are using and connection type (WLAN, 3G, etc.). Thanks in advance – I’d like to get to the bottom of this!

Update! I have now gotten a reply from UIQ. It appears that the fault is not located with UIQ, but rather Sony Ericsson’s hardware. Maybe I’ll try to have a chat with Sony Ericsson about this, as this is by far not acceptable.

New Sony Ericsson website structure

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

se_website_w890.jpg

If you’re a regular visitor of Sony Ericsson’s website – like myself – you should have noticed by now that the URL’s at their site were very strange and hard to figure out. Now, however, it looks like Sony Ericsson has updated the site with a new structure – i.e. the frontpage is now called http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/ and mobile phone pages are now much neater looking in the URL; http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/overview/w890i?cc=gb&lc=en for the W890.

Thanks to Xellar for telling me about this!

How to: Use your PC’s Internet connection on your A200 mobile phone via USB

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

If you’ve been wondering how you can use your PC’s Internet connection on your Sony Ericsson A200 mobile phone, then wait no more because I have the answer for you!

But first of all, let’s make sure that your phone is really running the A200 platform – right now there are K530, K630, K850, V640, W890, W910 & Z750 running this platform, but more will come in the future. The easiest way to know if it’s A200 or the old A100 is by looking at the softkeys – if there are two softkey options in the phone, it’s A100, if there are three, it’s A200. Quite simple, right?

Anyway, lets get on with it. Please note that you must have PC Suite 3.0 installed on your computer and you have to have had the phone connected to the PC first, so all drivers have been installed and are working. Also please have in mind that I’m running a Danish version of Windows XP, so my translations might not be totally accurate with the English ones – and it may not be the exact same way to do this on Vista! Last night’s Sony Ericsson announcement

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Last night Sony Ericsson announced three new mobile phones and one accessory. Here’s a little on each. Sorry about the late posting, was busy last night working.

K660 is an HSDPA-enabled mobile phone with the new version of the NetFront web browser now also featuring a cursor for browsing large websites. It’s developed for being used in landscape mode (but other SE phones can do this, too!), and Sony Ericsson has added four web shortcut keys, which seems to be a good idea. But I’m not too sure how it’ll work with the screen being in landscape and the keypad still being for portrait usage. We’ll see, I guess. It’ll also have RSS widgets on the standbyscreen, which is a nice feature! It has a 2 megapixel camera without auto focus, 256 MB M2-card comes along, and the screen is 2 inches large and has a QVGA resolution, showing up to 262.144 colors. It’ll be available some time in Q1 next year with a price tag around £180 – £200.

W380 is the manufacturer’s new low-end Walkman phone with a 1.3 megapixel camera, Walkman 2.0, TrackID, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP-support and a radio. It comes bundled with a 512 MB M2-card, that’s capable of storing around 270 songs in eAAC+ format. It’s also got a new feature called ‘Gesture Control’, so if you get an incoming call or the alarm starts, all you have to do is shake the phone, and the sound will go off. Pretty nice! It’ll come in two colors: Electric Purple & Magnetic Grey, will ship in Q1 and will end up at around £130 – £150.

W890 was the last phone announced yesterday. It’s the successor of W880, and comes bundled with a massive 2 gigabyte M2-card with storage room for over a thousand songs. But that’s not all – it also comes with the HBH-DS220 stereo Bluetooth headset and the Bluetooth speaker ball MBS-100. It’s got HSDPA and Walkman 3.0 for listening to music. Sony Ericsson itself calls it a high quality listening experience, so that sounds nice. The camera is a 3.2 megapixel without auto focus (seems like this isn’t really for Walkman phones). Screen is a QVGA TFT display with a 2 inch diagonal and is capable of showing up to 262.144 colors like the other phones. It’ll start shipping in Q1 in three colors: Espresso Black, Mocha Brown and Sparkling Silver. Price will end up around £320.

MD300 is a USB modem with HSDPA-support. It’s a plug’n'play modem, so all you have to do is plug it in and it should be ready to work. MD300 supports only the 3.6 mbps HSDPA, and not the faster 7.2 mbps. It supports Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Mac OS X. It’ll come in Q1.

K660i appears at Sony Ericsson’s website!

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

The Sony Ericsson K660i, a phone that is planned to be announced this Tuesday, has appeared at Sony Ericsson’s official website. If you go to the UK site and press the product portfolio, you’ll see it. The website is here, if you’re interested.

K660 is a web-focused phone with 3G, EDGE & HSDPA and a special web browser (still NetFront, but with a mouse pointer). It also has a set of web keys on the keypad, just like the K850 has camera keys. Now what’s the purpose of these, you might be thinking. Well, the web browser is in landscape mode, so it should make a difference in browsing. But the keypad is still designed for portrait mode usage, so it’ll be a bit weird, I’d assume. Another thing making it a web-focused phone is the RSS widget on standby screen – nice! Since it’s a web-focused phone, it’s a bit weird that it doesn’t have a large display – at least it doesn’t seem like it’s very large.

According to the Sony Ericsson website the phones has maps and navigation services (GPS?), definitely something that sounds exciting.

It’s got a 2 megapixel camera without auto focus and flash. It does have PhotoFix, though. You can transfer the pictures by PictBridge, Bluetooth or post them to your blog.
