Video: Sony Ericsson phones durability test

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Having read some of the comments about my rather cool (and totally copyrighted!) way of handling the F305, T700 and W302 in the unboxing videos (read: tossing them around a bit), I’ve decided to go all in with a large durability test, and – naturally – caught it all on tape, err, memory card! The durability test included no less than thirty Sony Ericsson phones that all received some TLC before being airborne. To my great surprise, none of the phones received any scratches from this test – great job, Sony Ericsson!

All right… My time is up, and I’ll leave you with the video and a question just below it…

So, have I got too much time on my hands or too many phones to be in my hands? That’s the question!

The phones in the video are:

C902, C905, G900, K530, K660, K700, K750, 2x K770, K800, K850, M600, P990, S500, T68i, T230, T610, W550, 2x W595, 2x W760, W800, 2x W890, W900, W950, W960, X1, and Z320.

Adverts on USEB

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

As you might have noticed, we’ve added a few advert links around the site. Please don’t be scared of the adverts – they’re designed to help the people behind SE-NSE / USEB cover the monthly costs of the rather expensive server and hosting. Since we don’t want to ask for financial support from anyone, we thought the best way to get some revenue would be to implement subtle click adverts. These adverts will appear on the front page and when viewing a single post – and that’s it! Should it happen that the advert revenue exceeds our server and hosting costs, we promise it’ll be spent wisely on improving your experience at SE-NSE and USEB, as well as our coverage of events.

We’ll be experimenting with the placement and type of adverts over the next few weeks to find the best thinkable combination. If you have any feedback you think we might be able to use in the process, please post it in a comment below. Thanks.

Merry Christmas everyone!

xmas_useb

It’s that time of the year again… On behalf of the entire team here at USEB, I’d like to wish you and your family a merry Christmas and a happy new year! May you have a wonderful day with friends and loved ones, and spread love and joy with the ones around you. It has almost been a year since USEB moved to its current location, and in light of that, I’d like to share a few statistics with you about USEB.

  • More than 700 individual pages and posts
  • 1.9 million page views total
  • 5,300 page views per day (average)
  • 6,000 unique comments (and 20,000 spam comments…)
  • Well over a thousand RSS readers (currently 1,200+ readers)

All in all, 2008 has been a fantastic year for us, and we hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as we have. I think it’s safe to say that 2009 will be even better, and I simply can’t wait to unveil some of the stuff we’ve got planned for you! You will be able to win great prizes in our upcoming competitions, check out our exclusive prototype previews and videos, and so much more in 2009 :) We hope you’re ready to take the plunge into 2009 with us!

So, last year we gave you a present in the shape of a product review. This year I’ve decided to do something a bit different. As said, we’ll be holding some competitions next year, and I’d like to double your chance of winning the first competition we’ll hold next year. How? Simple. Just answer the following question, and we’ll keep everyone in mind when we select a winner for the first competition by adding an extra entry. Got it? Great! The question is…

  • How many posts did we publish on the 10th of February, 2008?

Think you can answer that one? Well, feel free to post your answer in a comment to this blog post.

Please welcome the updated theme

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

As you might have noticed already, the theme of the blog has been updated a bit. Quite frankly, I was getting a bit sick of the dark grey colours, so I went for something that is not only lighter on the eyes, but also on your Internet connection. I’ve done some comparisons of this theme and the old one on a 1 Mbps broadband connection, and the new theme loaded more than 60 % faster than the old one, due to code optimizations and fewer database queries. Admittedly, this place has not been the fastest to load, but hopefully this theme update will provide a significant boost in speed for most of you.

I’ve also updated WordPress to version 2.7, which should hopefully do a thing or two with regards to speeding up the blog. In due time, I’ll probably update the source codes to match the new functionality of WordPress 2.7, which should result in even faster loading speeds and fewer database queries.

Secondly, the new theme is a lot cleaner and generally looks better – at least, that’s what I think, but hopefully you’ll agree with me on this.

There are still a few bugs I need to fix and code that should be rewritten, but 95% of the theme codes are xHTML valid. Also, please note that we’ve dropped support for Internet Explorer 6 with this theme update. I’d recommend using either Firefox 3 or the latest version of Safari to get the best experience, as these browsers support CSS level 3, but Internet Explorer 7 / 8, Opera, etc., should work just fine as well.

As always, I’m dying to hear what you think, so please leave some of feedback in the comments below, and don’t hesitate to report any possible bugs as well.

Join us on Facebook!

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

We think it’s safe to say that Facebook has grown into being one of the largest and most commonly used online social communities. Every day, millions of people use Facebook to get in touch with friends and keep up with interests, videos and websites.

SE-NSE / USEB has been on Facebook for quite some time now, but we’ve never really promoted the Facebook group. Up until now, that is. We plan on making lots of changes, and actively taking part of social communities is definitely one of them.

With all that said, feel free to join us on Facebook, where you can keep up with your friends and people you know from SE-NSE and maybe even get a few first-hand glimps into what will happen in the near future.

Join the SE-NSE group right here!

Update! Great job, lots of people have joined in on the fun. Keep it up! :-)

Sony Ericsson video Q&A and X1 video demo

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

A very interesting video Q&A with Sony Ericsson’s President, Hideki Komiyama, and Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President and Head of Portfolio & Proposition at Sony Ericsson, was posted at Trace and Matt’s Blog. Komiyama tells that they’re definitely working on innovative products and that they’re aware of their problems. It’ll take three to four months (and yeah, we agree!). Also, Rikko Sakaguchi tells that they know that they cannot keep on segmenting products, and he even comments on the JavaOne video on YouTube. That made me giggle a bit :-)

Also, a comprehensive video demo of the X1 was posted. Check it out!

By the way, if you’re wondering what’s happening with the various embedded Sony Ericsson applications on USEB, that’s simply a part of SE’s blogger and community outreach. They’re also going to set up a number of competitions for both readers and blog authors, so keep an eye out on this place. If you’ve got dreams of starting your own SE blog, now would be a good time to do it, too :-) They’re really doing a great job keeping up with the web communities nowadays, latest with the launch of Xperiancers.com.

Updated USEB review grade system

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Last night I got the crazy idea of upgrading our review grade system. Crazy because it meant I had to stay up till 3.00 – 3.30 AM in the morning to write most of the codes used, and make sure everything was working just fine in all browsers.

I know that our previous grade system wasn’t exactly the best, and the scores may have been a bit unfair or unexplained because of that. Hopefully, this shouldn’t be the case any more with the new one. The new system consists of no less than 43 factors, that will all have an influence on the final grade, now dubbed USEB Score, which will be given in percent, and displayed with a very brief comment below. Each grade category represents a set of factors, that will be displayed, if you press the category title. If you don’t need the additional info about the grades, everything is nicely hidden.

To make things a bit more interesting, we’ve also added space for SPMark 06 Java benchmark scores, so everyone can see how the phones perform. This is where we need your help! For rather obvious reasons, it’s impossible for us to add SPMark 06 Java scores for all of the reviewed phones. If you can run a full benchmark on one of the below listed phones, please post your results in a comment below, and we’ll add your scores to our review. The phones are;

  • C702
  • C902
  • G700
  • K660
  • P1
  • W380
  • W760
  • W890
  • Z770

If you want to help us out, but haven’t got the application installed, it can be downloaded for free, right here. Thanks in advance.

We will start updating the previous large-scaled reviews today, starting with the W760 review.

Now launching: useb|de

USEB has become one of the best – if not the best – blogs dedicated to Sony Ericsson, offering news, rumours & reviews.
Unfortunately, not everyone in the SE community is good enough in English to enjoy all aspects the USEB offers. That’s why we launch our first local site to test the waters for such a service. Being German myself, it’s the most obvious step to start with a localized German blog offering the same content we have here, but translated like no online tool is able to.
You can find useb|de at blogde.se-nse.net to get an impression of it.

Do you have ideas for other localized versions? Feel free to comment.

Tell your friends about us,
xell.

Presenting USEB v3 *beta*

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

We’ve got a nice little feature in the footer here at the blog that shows the current theme version. It has been saying v2.55 for quite some time now, but not anymore! From now on it should said v3.00(b), as I’ve just activated our updated and greatly improved theme. It is still not a finished version, and I am hoping you’ll report any bugs or missing features. I promise I’ll keep updating the theme!

Features / changes
- New colour scheme
- Improved menu layout
- 8.5x lighter source code
- Over 35 % faster loading speeds
- Lots of code cleanup / improvements
- Valid CSS 3, RSS 2.0 & xHTML 1.0 Transitional
- Fully tested with Firefox 3, Internet Explorer 7, Opera 9.5 & Safari 3.1

I’m also looking into setting up a mobile version of the blog that’ll be even lighter on the data transfers for all our mobile phone users.

Please do tell me what you think, and I hope you’ll enjoy it! :)
