Sony Ericsson Anzu Press Release picture

Friday, November 26th, 2010

The Anzu saga continues. Following on from the Anzu specification and high quality live pics from Eldar. Now we have official Press Release pictures of the device. The size of the pictures surely doesn’t fulfil our curiosity, but we can clearly see that the device is very thin and follows on the style of XPERIA X8 by the usage of two-tone battery covers. A hole in the battery cover suggests that a second microphone is fitted for noise cancellation during a call. The announcement of the device will most likely happen at the next MWC in February.

The Anzu Game

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Mobile-review is gearing up to take a first look at Anzu, otherwise known as the Sony Ericsson X12. However, before they get around to that they’re playing a wee game asking what you think the specifications of the handset will be. Go and take a peek and maybe offer a suggestion yourself.

Leaked Win Phone 7 Devices: X7 & X7 Mini

Monday, November 15th, 2010

It’s not news to hear that Sony Ericsson are developing handsets for Microsoft’s new Windows Phone platform, but here we have what could be the first leaked information about said handsets. The two devices, named the X7 and the X7 Mini, appear in what are purported to be leaked slides.

The X7 looks to be sporting a 4.3 inch screen with a 1.2 GHz processor nestling under the hood. The camera is a not too shabby 8.1 MP affair that supports 710p recording. The handset also, curiously, has support for HDMI output. I say curious because Windows Phone apparently doesn’t support HDMI so this could be the fatal flaw in an otherwise convincing hoax or it could be that Windows Phone, at least where Sony Ericsson is concerned, does indeed support HDMI.

The X7 Mini is a smaller version of the X7 although with a 3.5 inch screen it can hardly be called ‘mini’. The processor isn’t quite as fast, being the more standard fare of a 1 GHz effort. The camera is beefe dup though, 10.1 MP and with x3 optical zoom and xenon flash.

Release dates, etc are of course non-existent at the moment, but given that these handsets are slated for next year expect to see them at MWC.

New Android Handsets, Old Android OS

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

In all the excitement of today’s X12 leak it would have been easy to miss a rather interesting comment Mobile-Review’s Eldar Murtazin made about the other handsets Sony Ericsson are planning on launching next year.

Eldar said that Sony Ericsson showed him seven handsets and from the tweet you can see that most are Android based. So far so good. However, Eldar then mentions that Sony Ericsson are again using their own custom UI and that the handsets are running older versions of Android. Not so good.

Timescape and Mediascape are actually pretty good, but if that comes at the price of an older version of Android I say that’s too high a price to pay. Of course these handsets that Eldar saw were no doubt prototypes so perhaps the finished products will be running Gingerbread, but as anyone who has ever owned an X10 can tell you, that is most definitely not a sure fire thing.

The PlayStation Phone … It’s Real

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

The long wait is finally over … the PlayStation phone is here.

Ever since Sony Ericsson first started assigning their handsets Sony branding back in the Cybershot and Walkman days people have been asking when we would see a PlayStation branded phone. We’ve listened as rumours have come and gone, but at long last we can take our first look at the PlayStation phone.

Posted Image

The pictures you are looking at were first posted over on Engadget, who first reported on the handset’s existence back in August. Staying true to their initial report they are maintaining that the device will be launched soon and will almost certainly be running the latest version of Android i.e. Gingerbread. The actual release date could be as soon as the end of this year, but more likely is a 2011 release window, so perhaps early next year.

The specifications aren’t fully known yet, but what we do know is that it will feature the following:

  • 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 1 GB ROM
  • 3.7 – 4.1 inch display
  • microSD support (no proprietary Sony nonsense here)

You will probably have noticed the space between the d-pad and the familiar four PlayStation buttons. This is the multi-touch enabled touchpad, which will no doubt be used for interacting with various contents, most likely including some games.

On the subject of games the handset will be rolling out with its very own customised market place that will sell games specifically developed for this handset and its control setup.

It’s important to note that what you are looking at here is a prototype, it’s not the finished article so please bear that in mind. There is no custom Ui skin, for example, and Engadget mention that the device is pretty buggy at the moment, but of course that’s to be expected with a device at this stage of production.

Sony Ericsson Working On Android 3.0 PlayStation Handset

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Sony Ericsson has managed to cram just about every Sony brand name onto a phone over the past few years. We’ve seen Cybershot branded cameraphones and Walkman branded music phones, in Japan they’ve even had Bravia branded handsets. One brand has been missing from the portfolio though and it’s the one that most people desperately want to see … PlayStation. According to information obtained by Engadget that may become a reality sooner than we think.

Sony Ericsson are apparently working on a new gaming platform for Android that could redefine Android gaming. The work involves developing not only the platform itself, but an entire ecosystem to support it as well as a gaming device that is said to be in the late planning stages and receiving input from Google themselves.

In terms of the handset it’s been described as a mixture of Samsung’s Captivate and Sony’s PSP Go. What that means is that it’s a slider phone (in landscape mode), but instead of a keyboard sliding out it’s game controls the user will see i.e. a d-pad, a ‘long touch pad‘, the familiar PSP buttons, and shoulder buttons. The display is described as being large, somewhere between 3.7″ and 4.1″ and will be WVGA or better. The onboard camera is a 5 MP effort, which is pretty much the industry standard these days, but which could be beefed up further before the final design. In terms of the processor it looks like Sony Ericsson is going with the tried and tested option of a 1 GHz Snapdragon.

The aesthetics of the handset are also covered and help paint a picture of what it actually looks like in place of an actual picture of the device. It’s mostly black with silver highlighting, but the slide out game control area is white and silver. The device is tentatively being branded as an Xperia device, but it should carry the PlayStation branding too. Engadget quote those who have seen the device as describing it as “pretty damn sexy“.

Ok so that’s the hardware side of things, let’s now turn to the software. In sharp contrast to the X10 range of handsets this new device will be running Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) making it one of the most advanced Android handsets out in the market. There will be, as you may have already suspected, a custom UI skin from Sony Ericsson. Interestingly there will be a new section added to the Android Market to house the games for the new platform this handset will usher in. The games contained within this new section wil only be available for this new Sony Ericsson handset, at least to begin with. Other Android handsets should have access to them too if they meet the necessary hardware specifications and button configuration requirements.

The games themselves are said to be in the same bracket as PSX and PSP games in terms of graphics. In other words Android is getting full blown 3D gaming. The current range of games being touted for inclusion in this new Market section are predictably older titles, but there are some new ones in there too. The titles include God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and LittleBigPlanet (Ixalon’s favourite!). There are also apparently plans afoot for game titles that incorporate augmented reality.

The big question at this point is of course ‘when’? Well that is, as ever, a difficult question to answer. Engadget are citing October as a possible release window for this handset, but they do stress that this is unconfirmed and as we all know Sony Ericsson are not renowned for getting products to market on time.

X10 mini with Multi-touch Support

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Posted Image

After a month long debate finally being rested, with Sony Ericsson reconfirming that multi-touch indeed is not supported on the Xperia X10, it seems the action has now shifted to another device, the X10 mini.

However, this one isn’t your usual run of the mill rumor. Our  friend Michell over at se-blog did a little bit of research on his own. He managed to contact Synaptics, who are a supplier of touchscreen technologies and learned that the X10 mini sports a ClearPad 2000 solution, which means it supports dual touch, which is the basic form of multi-touch. It may not be available out of the box due to the device launching with Android 1.6 onboard, but it’ll certainly be enabled once the Android OS is updated.

Strangely, Synaptics is the supplier for only the X10 mini and not the X10 mini pro. Is it because Sony Ericsson thought that the mini would be crippled due to the lack of a physical keyboard and hence opted for the technology to provide a better experience? No idea. Sony Ericsson do have a knack of taking strange decisions, this one being another addition to the list.

Vivaz – Video Recording Sample

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Mitch has posted up a video taken by Vivaz, which nicely shows off its recording capabilities. He also posted up a collection of pictures of Vivaz, which are just beautiful to look at. It’s as good an image of the handset you’ll get without actually holding it in your hand. Mitch made an interesting comment about Vivaz seeming large rin photos than it really is or somehow losing part of its aesthetic quality. Mitch is bang on the money here because seeing he handset and holding it are two totally different things, it really does look great up close and feels superb in the hand; just the right size. Check out the video below and head on over to se-blog.com to check out the pictures.

X10 To Ship With Android 2.0?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Take this with a bit of salt for the moment, but during a rather interesting conversation earlier today I was reliably informed that a side effect of the delay in launching the X10 would be that it would ship with Android 2.0. The original announcement set the handset’s OS as Android 1.6 of course and there were some who lamented the lack of the newer 2.0 as seen in devices like Motorola’s Droid/Milestone. Sony Ericsson quickly responded by saying that an upgrade to 2.0 (and multi-touch) would take place, but didn’t give any timescale. If this information proves correct then it would mean the X10 starts life on a more even keel with other Android handsets and perhaps more importantly would end speculation over when (and if) it would receive the 2.0 update.

It’s not just the X10 that’s about to be released of course, Kurara is almost upon us too! In fact I was told to expect it in week nine or in other words the first week of March. Whether that means Kanna will be released at the same time or not wasn’t mentioned. Interestingly enough though, well interesting if you live in the UK anyway, it looks like 3 have definitely signed up to stock Kurara. As for the X10 T-Mobile will apparently stock the handset, which is a little surprising given that they have had a somewhat troubled relationship with high-end handsets of late. There was no mention of exactly what other networks would stock the X10, but contract pricing was said to be ‘reasonsble’, somewhere in the £35/month range.

Kanna – Kurara’s Sister

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Mitch over on se-blog.com has posted up some pictures of Kanna, a sibling of Kurara. It’s not just the names that are similar, the specifications are largely similar; the main difference being that Kanna sports a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Mitch reckons the announcement will be during the MWC in February.

Kanna 1Kanna 2

So what are we talking specs wise?
