Sony Ericsson Susan running Android?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

A new picture of earlier shown Susan appeared on the net, if you look on the statusbar it looks alot like the Android statusbar. If Susan runs Android or not isn’t known, it could be a new Sony Ericsson platform or a new Symbian phone perhaps?

UK Satio Launch Delayed

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Bad news for those patiently (or not) awaiting the arrival of Satio in the UK tomorrow … it’s been delayed. Carphone Warehouse, the UK’s largest independent mobile retailer, was due to launch the 12.1 MP handset tomorrow, but that has been put on hold with no date given as to when it will go on sale. One imagines (and hopes) that it’s soon given that sales material and expectations had all been geared towards a launch date of tomorrow. The delay was only announced today so it is presumably something outside Carphone’s control.

Whether or not this delay will affect Orange and Vodafone’s launches isn’t clear yet. It may be that it’s just Carphone that’s affected and the other two will go ahead with a launch tomorrow as scheduled. Carpone would be selling generic unbranded, unlocked handsets whereas both Orange and Vodafone stores would sell branded locked handsets, hence the stock assignments for each of the three companies would be different and thus it may be just Carphone that’s experiencing a delay. We’ll know soon enough …

gsmarena-satio

The folks over at GSMArena have done it again! Apparently, they’ve managed to get their hands on Sony Ericsson’s future flagship phone – the 12 megapixel Satio touchscreen cameraphone. And they’re really liking it. Like, really. They also say the screen quality is amongst the best they’ve seen, despite it being TFT and that itscapacitive nature doesn’t hinder usability at all. Furthermore, they state that the Satio produced the most high-quality photos they’ve ever seen from a phone and that it can easily replace a mid-range standalone camera. Pretty cool, huh? Oh, and that the VGA clip quality and video playback are superb.

Did I mention they love the interface? Well, for the whole preview plus pictures, photo samples and videos click the Source link. You know you want to.

‘Idou’ is Sony Ericsson’s upcoming 12.1-megapixel phone

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

idou

Along with the launching of Entertainment Unlimited, Sony Ericsson showcased an upcoming mobile phone by the concept ‘Idou’, which is going to give us a glimpse of what lies ahead for us, and what Sony Ericsson is currently working on. The ‘Idou’ is one of a number of projects that will be launched this year under the umbrella of Entertainment Unlimited.

The ‘Idou’ is a cameraphone with special focus on media. It will feature a 12.1-megapixel camera with auto focus and an array of advanced camera touch features and a xenon flash. I’m guessing the sensor in this phone will the Sony’s new 1/2.5-inch 12.25 megapixel sensor for mobile phones. That would be awesome! The Media menu will now be fully optimized for the 3.5-inch 16:9 widescreen touch screen, and will enable you to tap directly into your favourite movies, TV-series, video clips and tracks.

The phone will be based on what will become the Symbian Foundation operating system, which means that thousands of applications will be available online. PlayNow will be pre-installed, and will allow you to personalize the phone.

- “Entertainment Unlimited is at the core of Sony Ericsson’s philosophy, building on the strength of our great entertainment assets such as Walkman and Cyber-shot phones and our unique service and applications integration.  Many of the strategic initiatives we’ve announced in the past year have laid the internal framework to launch this new consumer proposition to the market and Sony Ericsson is now ready to drive the next wave of market development with Entertainment Unlimited”, said Hideki Komiyama, President at Sony Ericsson, in a press release.

The ‘Idou’ will be available during the second half of 2009 – naturally marketed by a different product name.

SE Admits to Over-Diversification & Talks About Future Smartphones

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Mats Lindoff, Sony Ericsson’s Chief Technology Officer, has perhaps been taking lessons from Steve Ballmer as he has been dropping sound bites galore this past week. Let’s start with the over-diversification …

As any self-respecting Sony Ericsson fan will know Sony Ericsson have been announcing and cancelling handsets like it’s going out fashion over the past year. Some have been wee gems like the G900 or the C902, others have been … well less than stellar. There have been a lot of handsets and  to be blunt some of them have been either unnecessary given the existence of other handsets in SE’s portfolio or just haven’t added much to the market that previous handset’s didn’t already offer. It seems that Sony Ericsson is finally confirming what the rest of us already knew, namely that they over-diversified.

The admission started last week when Sony Ericsson President Hideki Komiyama said that he is aware that Sony Ericsson has problems and that they are working on innovative products. Now we have Mr Lindoff, speaking at the launch of PlayNow Plus, saying that Sony Ericsson over-diversified in Q3:

There were probably too many devices in the portfolio in Q3. We developed products that have not been ranged by operators. It makes no sense to develop it if we are not damn sure it’s ranged.

It’s good to see Sony Ericsson recognising this issue because hopefully it signals the start of a turn around for the company that sees them release great handsets again like they did in their early days with the likes of the T68i, the T610, the P800, and the K750.

Mr Lindoff had more to say though as he also talked about Sony Ericsson’s smart phone plans. He made the claim that the X1 is primarily aimed at the U.S. market, which seems a little strange given that it will be released there after being released in European markets:

Operators have demanded a Windows Mobile device for the past five years so it’s driven by them for enterprise customers. Yes, you could say it is primarily for the US market.

The claim isn’t so strange when taken in this context given that Windows Mobile has arguably a stronger presence, or at least a stronger image, in the American market than it does in European markets where Symbian rules the roost.

Mr Lindoff wasn’t one for stopping and he continued his comments by talking about smart phone platforms. Android, Google’s open source mobile platform, is something that Sony Ericsson are apparently interested in at least, but Lindoff was cautious in commiting to it. He commented that Sony Ericsson might develop an Android handset, presumably as part of the Xperia line given previous comments by Sony Ericsson to the effect that Xperia isn’t tied to WinMo. However, he cited a lack of resources as preventing Sony Ericsson from realising this any time soon.

Symbian Foundation appears to be more important to Sony Ericsson though as Sony Ericsson already have Symbian Foundation handsets in development, with the first coming next year as part of the Xperia line. The good news for mobile geeks is that it is promised to be very high-end! Lindoff is quoted as saying:

We will launch a Symbian Foundation handset in the next year. There will be really high-end Xperia devices.

Sony Ericsson should allow Mats Lindoff to speak more often!

Some postponements…

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

It looks like some have spotted the poll here on USEB, this time with the subject of what you guys think will be announced on the 17th. Many seem to think that Sony Ericsson will announce a few high-end smart phones, and I do understand why you’d think so, as just about every sign has been pointing to that. But stuff gets postponed, and that’s what has happened in the case of Beibei and Paris.

These phones will not be announced on the 17th, unless there’ll be a major change of plans just moments before the announcements on the 17th, although I extremely doubt this, seeing the announcement events are held in so many countries.

It’s sad, though, as especially the G702 (Beibei) looks to be an awesome phone. On the bright side, though, there has been talk about hardware upgrades, which I personally believe is true, and that should be the reason for the postponements.

It’ll be a mix of low-end and mid-end phones, and of course the camera flagship Shiho, which is awesome, by the way. More – or should I say everything? – on that one later this week.

Yet Another BeiBei Leak

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

… and this time it’s from SEMC Blog, where author Maximys has gotten his hands on three exclusive photos of the upcoming BeiBei. Today he’s posting one, and he has said that he’ll be posting a photo of the slim side as well as the beautiful back soon. We’ll be waiting!
