‘Idou’ is Sony Ericsson’s upcoming 12.1-megapixel phone

idou

Along with the launching of Entertainment Unlimited, Sony Ericsson showcased an upcoming mobile phone by the concept ‘Idou’, which is going to give us a glimpse of what lies ahead for us, and what Sony Ericsson is currently working on. The ‘Idou’ is one of a number of projects that will be launched this year under the umbrella of Entertainment Unlimited.

The ‘Idou’ is a cameraphone with special focus on media. It will feature a 12.1-megapixel camera with auto focus and an array of advanced camera touch features and a xenon flash. I’m guessing the sensor in this phone will the Sony’s new 1/2.5-inch 12.25 megapixel sensor for mobile phones. That would be awesome! The Media menu will now be fully optimized for the 3.5-inch 16:9 widescreen touch screen, and will enable you to tap directly into your favourite movies, TV-series, video clips and tracks.

The phone will be based on what will become the Symbian Foundation operating system, which means that thousands of applications will be available online. PlayNow will be pre-installed, and will allow you to personalize the phone.

- “Entertainment Unlimited is at the core of Sony Ericsson’s philosophy, building on the strength of our great entertainment assets such as Walkman and Cyber-shot phones and our unique service and applications integration.  Many of the strategic initiatives we’ve announced in the past year have laid the internal framework to launch this new consumer proposition to the market and Sony Ericsson is now ready to drive the next wave of market development with Entertainment Unlimited”, said Hideki Komiyama, President at Sony Ericsson, in a press release.

The ‘Idou’ will be available during the second half of 2009 – naturally marketed by a different product name.

Secret prototypes stolen from Sony Ericsson in Sweden

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

A Sony Ericsson employee in Lund has been caught in the act. Apparently, the man has stolen top-secret prototypes of unannounced phones from Sony Ericsson’s headquarter in Sweden. The stolen phones are estimated to be worth more than £61,000, and are considered being highly valuable for Sony Ericsson’s competitors.

The Swedish police made a raid at the man’s house in Skåne, Sweden, where the prototypes were found. Swedish police say that they found “a number of phones”.

Sony Ericsson’s Swedish PR presentative, Gustav Brusewitz, confirms the situation to IDG.se, but naturally he can’t say more about the phones.

I’ve really only got one thing to say about this man; what an idiot! Most people reading this know – or at least have an idea of – how incredibly strict Sony Ericsson’s security policies are. And then someone goes along and does this… Oh, the irony!

Video preview: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Here’s our 12-minute video preview of the drool-worthy XPERIA X1. In the video, we’re covering the design and feel of the phone, boot-up, the XPERIA panels, camera and briefly the two web browsers, Opera Mobile and Mobile Internet Explorer. We hope you enjoy the video, as it was straight-up painful to upload (almost 300 megabytes) – this one is not going on YouTube, that’s for sure! At least not today. Keep in mind this is a prototype, although it seems in a stage awfully near retail.

Several photos of the cancelled W707

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Had the Sony Ericsson W707 (codenamed Alicia) not been cancelled, it would have been announced along with the W302, W595 and W902. Unfortunately, though, it was cancelled, probably because it was too similar to the W980.

Anyway, a Polish Sony Ericsson blog has managed to get several photos of the W707, showcasing its looks, the special external displays and the user interface, known from other new Sony Ericsson phones.

Check out the gallery here!

Following up on the JavaOne video

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

This is going to be a short one, we just wanted to post the high quality JavaOne video – you know, the one with the unknown, unannounced, mysterious THREE-way slider smartphone, that’s supposedly going to be launched this year, according to Sony Ericsson’s Rikko Sakaguchi? Yes, you remember? Well, great! Here’s the high quality video – don’t forget to press “High Quality” on YouTube for the very best of the best. Well, sort of… Thanks, Xell!

Tova & Remi: Sisters in looks

Friday, August 1st, 2008

We showed you the first pics of Remi in June and highlighted the similarity to the T610. Back then we only had an official photo of the T610 we could compare Remi with.
Now we are happy to show you a face to face of the two sisters.

Taking a look back at Paris (and a bit on Beibei)

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Now that both have been cancelled after a long development period, we thought it wouldn’t hurt anybody to shed a bit of light on these phones.

Paris was going to be Sony Ericsson’s first slider in the P-series line-up. While it was partly based on old hardware, Sony Ericsson had made several software enhancements that would significantly speed up the phone. In addition to this, the Paris would have been based on UIQ 3.3. Anyway, what I wanted to show in this blog post was that Sony Ericsson realized that the business segment no longer has to be connected to boring colour schemes. It can be black and grey while still looking like a million bucks! I’ve known about the three colour variants for Paris (black/blue, silver/red, and black/orange) in about two months now, and this was one of the things that I liked about it – they’re trying to break the habit of “one colour variant” business & enterprise phones. Let’s hope they’ll keep it up in upcoming S60-based business phones. (more…)

Feng and Remi goes live

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

Yet another of the rumoured phones to be announced on July 22 has today been leaked – W302, codenamed Feng, which is a Walkman branded S302. This means it’s got a 2 mega pixel fixed focus camera, 176 x 220 pixels display and it runs the A2 software platform.

We told you about the T610 remake almost two weeks ago, and now more photos of this phone, still only known by its codename (Remi), have been leaked. Remi is a candybar phone, probably for the T-series range of phones. It features a mediocre 3.2 mega pixel camera without auto focus, though with a flash LED, as well as HSDPA for speedy Internet connections. It’s basically a generic version of W890. Remi is not going to be announced on July 22.

Let’s start off with Feng…
