Update: X10 Multi-touch Why Did SE Say It Might Come?

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

After the news that the X10 would not support multi-touch some were asking why there had been a comment from SE back in November that it might do at some future point and I discussed a couple of theories as to what may have been going on yesterday. Today Sumit Malhotra, the chap who made the original comments back in November, made a post explaining his remarks:

Back in November, I posted that X10 will not support multi touch functionality at launch, but will be considered for the future. I can appreciate that even though there wasn´t a commitment, such wording both creates expectations (small or big) on future support and implies restrictions on software side.

That is the information I had in hand at that point of time. I am well aware that you rate multi touch functionality very high and therefore I regret to inform you that X10 screen hardware does not register simultaneous entries. Meaning even though we will upgrade the underlying operating system in relation to upgrading our user experience layer, X10 will not support multi touch functionality. We believe that it is important for you who follow this blog to be clear on that, which is the reason why I want to confirm Rikard’s comment.

We are working on alternative solutions for certain use cases, like zooming. I will share more details about that initiative once confirmed.

Due to vendor understanding and agreements, we don´t discuss in detail regarding hardware specifications. Having said that, X10 is upgradable and as earlier described there will be significant value offered through upgrades. X10 is about to reach stores and early consumer feedback is very positive, also highlighting room for improvement which we will share in due time.

Regards,
Sumit

It looks to be a simple case of misinformation as I suggested yesterday. Whilst it’s certainly annoying and has probably caused some people to get their hopes up I do hope that Sony Ericsson don’t see this as negative mark against their Product Launch Blog, which is quite frankly the best customer experience programme to have come out of the company in years.

Thanks to Malcolm for posting up Sumit’s comments.

Update: Satio Delay

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Following on from yesterday disappointing news that Satio, Sony Ericsson’s flagship entertainment device, would be delayed we have some more details to provide. The major piece of news is that the delay was caused by the need for a software update to be performed. This is both good and bad new. Bad because it doesn’t bode well for the reliability of the handset that the software has had to be tinkered with the day before it was due to go on sale. On the other hand it shows that Sony Ericsson are at least on the ball and trying to nip a potential problem in the bud.

Then there’s the question of just exactly when Satio will see the light of day. What I’m hearing is that the handset should (note the use of the word should) go on sale sometime next week. If that’s true then fair enough, not ideal, but it’s not too much of a delay and shouldn’t seriously impact Satio’s sales. However, I am hearing from orange that they won’t be selling Satio until the end of October! No actual date was given, but ‘end of’ doesn’t sound good. Of course this might just be Orange and other retailers may sell Satio sooner, but even if that is the case it’s still a blow to Satio.

All in all it looks like a half-baked launch that’s descended into the typical Sony Ericsson circus that we’ve come to expect from their high-end product launches. I just hope that we see Satio hit the shelves sooner rather than later.

UK Satio Launch Delayed

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Bad news for those patiently (or not) awaiting the arrival of Satio in the UK tomorrow … it’s been delayed. Carphone Warehouse, the UK’s largest independent mobile retailer, was due to launch the 12.1 MP handset tomorrow, but that has been put on hold with no date given as to when it will go on sale. One imagines (and hopes) that it’s soon given that sales material and expectations had all been geared towards a launch date of tomorrow. The delay was only announced today so it is presumably something outside Carphone’s control.

Whether or not this delay will affect Orange and Vodafone’s launches isn’t clear yet. It may be that it’s just Carphone that’s affected and the other two will go ahead with a launch tomorrow as scheduled. Carpone would be selling generic unbranded, unlocked handsets whereas both Orange and Vodafone stores would sell branded locked handsets, hence the stock assignments for each of the three companies would be different and thus it may be just Carphone that’s experiencing a delay. We’ll know soon enough …

Video: Sony Ericsson phones durability test

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Having read some of the comments about my rather cool (and totally copyrighted!) way of handling the F305, T700 and W302 in the unboxing videos (read: tossing them around a bit), I’ve decided to go all in with a large durability test, and – naturally – caught it all on tape, err, memory card! The durability test included no less than thirty Sony Ericsson phones that all received some TLC before being airborne. To my great surprise, none of the phones received any scratches from this test – great job, Sony Ericsson!

All right… My time is up, and I’ll leave you with the video and a question just below it…

So, have I got too much time on my hands or too many phones to be in my hands? That’s the question!

The phones in the video are:

C902, C905, G900, K530, K660, K700, K750, 2x K770, K800, K850, M600, P990, S500, T68i, T230, T610, W550, 2x W595, 2x W760, W800, 2x W890, W900, W950, W960, X1, and Z320.

My K850 isn’t working

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

After some “fun” time in EMMA and an accidental phone lock reset on my K850, it stopped accepting SIM cards, so now it’s not working :-(

I’m posting about this because I promised you guys an in-depth going review of K850’s camera, which I won’t be able to do now. At least not until I find a way to unlock it for free.

Why are UIQ 3 downloads so slow?

Monday, December 10th, 2007

[UPDATED] This have really been a problem, that has been bugging me for a long time. UIQ 3 download speeds are absolutely ridiculous – here’s an example. I’ve got a 2 Mbps Internet connection at home and download speeds are about 210 KB/s. However when downloading with my P990, the download speed is only about 3 KB/s – that’s 70 times lower than normal speed! I’ve been trying to ask a few people, who knows a lot about UIQ, but nobody has been able to give me an answer. Maybe I’ll try to contact UIQ and see what they have to say. I have now contacted UIQ.

In the mean time, I’d like to ask you guys if you’ve experienced this, too, and what phone you are using and connection type (WLAN, 3G, etc.). Thanks in advance – I’d like to get to the bottom of this!

Update! I have now gotten a reply from UIQ. It appears that the fault is not located with UIQ, but rather Sony Ericsson’s hardware. Maybe I’ll try to have a chat with Sony Ericsson about this, as this is by far not acceptable.

Security hole found in Sony Ericsson phones

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

It seems that two research scientists – Adrian Nowak and Karsten Sohr – at Bremen University in Germany has found a security hole in Sony Ericsson phones that can give applications read & write access to the system files, and in worst cases exploit this access. However this can also give users the ability to change or delete some of the “unwanted” system files such as protected ring tones, parts of operator branding and alike.

The “affected” phones – so to speak – are phones sold between 2005 – 2007, which means that it’s everything from the good old K750 to newer phones such as T650 – maybe also the K850 and W910, but that’s not for sure. Only Java phones (those running OSE and not Symbian UIQ) has this “problem”.

Personally I don’t think it’s that much of a problem as the user must grant the application permission to access these files. So please do not worry about this – it’s still totally safe to use your phone and install applications. It just shows that the students at Bremen University should have better things to do than this ;-)

Oh no! My K850’s back has cracked!

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

I’ve just noticed that my recently bought K850 has a huge crack all the way from the speaker on the back to the right side of the phone – the crack is like 2-3 centimeters long! I guess this is what happens when the phone falls out of your pocket twice in just one day – because that’s how unlucky I was yesterday! Luckily the crack isn’t visible unless you point it at direct sun light or a powerful flash (which is why I had to snap these pictures with hard flash). So for those of you with a K850 out there – be careful and try to find some proper protection case for it, as it could come in handy!

I still can’t believe how little it takes to crack the back of this phone… damn…

First Orange W910 shipment recalled

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Sony Ericsson recalled the first shipment of W910 phones for Orange in the UK because of a series of firmware problems – one of these were that the phone turned itself off after 10 seconds of use. Another was that it would not accept incoming calls. Therefore Sony Ericsson recalled the first shipment and has now fixed the problems, the manufacturer says.

It’s a bit sad that W910 had these problems because it’s one of the highest spec’d non-smartphones Sony Ericsson has to offer at the moment and is the company’s best music phone available at the moment.

W960 in a P1’s body

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Now here’s something very interesting. It seems that Martin Vagner from uiqmania.cz has successfully flashed his P1 to a W960! However at a first look, Memory Stick Micro cards won’t work and the QWERTY won’t function either. Check out the video below, and see the discussion here.
