‘Brilliant!’ was the first thing coming to my mind, when getting the C902. The surface of my new phone is well polished and as smooth as glass. In addition to that the C902 is very thin for a Cyber-shot phone. Yet, the build quality is very good, and there’s a smooth transition between the nice materials and the weight of the phone.

The camera slider mechanism has been improved, so the lens cover feels solid and nice to use. As you all know, the C902 features a 5 mega pixel camera with auto focus and a new sort of LED-flash, called a Photoflash, which – according to Sony Ericsson – is on par with a xenon flash. It also contains a touch-sensitive surface around the 2″ display for advanced camera controls, which is very advantageous when taking photos.
I’m totally convinced by the camera quality. I’ve never seen such a good camera in such a thin phone! When you take photos, you’ll of course have to store them somewhere. For that, the C902 holds 160 megabytes of internal memory, which can be extended by a Memory Stick Micro memory card.

Let’s move on to the music department… The speaker is really awesome considering the thinness of the phone, and is comparable with K750’s speaker. The Mega Bass sounds very good on my BOSE QC2 headphones and the music player is very much comparable with the Walkman player.

Overall, the C902 is very, very neat and commendable for everyone who’s looking for a slim and well-built camera phone in the upper end of things. It’ll be priced at approximately £220 – £250, and is expected to hit the stores later this month.

Expect our full review of the C902 later this month, about the same time as it’ll start being available. Gallery of the C902 can be found here.

First Impressions Of The Z770

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

“Wow – the front of this one looks amazing” was probably my first thought when unboxing the Z770. It gets even better once you pick it up, and you feel how well it fits in your palm. It’s obvious that the designers of the Z770 have been had a look out for the small, yet important details. One is that the phone’s outside is completely flush around the flip hinge when opened. It simply feels like a piece of heaven. Another thing you’ll notice on the front is a mono-coloured outer display, which I’m quite fond of already.

The Z770 is a light-weight phone. It feels rock solid in hand, although the flip is a tiny bit loose (it can be moved about 0.1 millimetre). To my great surprise, the keypad on the Z770 is excellent! It offers great tactile feedback, and the large keys are really comfortable to use and with large spacing between them as well. While I would probably have wanted a better, marked separation of the keys, it doesn’t really matter that much.

The display is gorgeus! It’s a 2.2 inch TFT display, capable of showing upto 262.144 colours. Its colour saturation and representation is superb, and it’s got a very decent viewing angle to top it of with.

The camera, on the other hand, isn’t much to write home about. It’s a mediocre “snapper” camera, and you won’t be able to use the pictures for much other than goofing around with your friends or posting on your MySpace profile!

So, that was our short preview / first impressions of the Z770. Stay tuned for a review of it later this month.

GSMArena Previews The G502

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The lucky GSMArena team has had its hands on the recently announced G502, and has posted a nice preview of this black beauty. They like the user interface, the usability and its nice looks, but aren’t that impressed with its lack of advanced features. A full review will be posted in a few weeks, so in the meantime you can check out the preview here.

WM Experts’ First Impression Of XPERIA X1

Friday, April 18th, 2008

WM Experts is an interesting site, and they sure do know about the stuff they write about. A short while ago, they published a preview of the XPERIA X1, and it looks like they are extremely impressed;

Overall this might be the best hardware I’ve ever seen on a Windows Mobile device. [...] The screen. Good god, the screen is really beautiful. Flush, bright, and very high resolution. [...] So yes, the hardware delivers. [...] They are [the specifications], in short, nothing less than top of the line.

That sounds bloody excellent, don’t you think? Do me and yourself a favour and check out the highly positive preview of the X1 over at WM Experts.

We Fell In Love In Paris

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

You’ve probably already seen the picture we leaked of the upcoming UIQ smart phone, named Paris. In this post, we’ll go through its design and briefly tell about some features.

The slider form factor is going to be the form factor of Paris. Sony Ericsson has picked out some very nice materials for us, such as the shiny, mirror-like front cover, and metal has been used on large parts of the phone. Paris is quite slim (16 – 18 mm?), and we apologize for posting a picture that made it look a bit thicker than it really is.

The front of the phone holds a large touch display (with UIQ 3.3 supporting WQVGA, VGA & WVGA), a video call camera above the display, a minimalistic D-pad and two call keys making use of the same material as the rest of the front. This is quite nice, actually, and does affect the overall look of the device, more than you’d probably think it would.

Slide open the phone to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard beneath the exclusive-looking front. The keyboard consists of a number of multifunctional keys, like on M600 & P1, with the left part painted white and the right part painted black. This also looks much better than what your first thoughts may be. The phone is quite wide, making great room for this keyboard (and the large flush display, which pretty much fills out the device in width).

The back of Paris seems to have been made of metal. It looks quite nice, yet very simple. A sliding lens cover is protecting the 5 mega pixel camera on the top of the backside.

So, let’s talk about features. Paris features W-LAN 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, 3G and USB 2.0 cable transfers. It has a built-in GPS and comes bundled with Google Maps pre-installed, and we’re quite sure that WayFinder 7.0 will also be pre-installed on this device. The default web browser in Paris is Opera Mobile 9.5, as on other UIQ 3.3 devices.

So, when will we leak more pictures and what about that video, you guys talked about? Well, all in good time, but for now I can say that we plan to leak a set of three more pictures. One showing the shiny front (tomorrow), one showing the keyboard (Wednesday, next week) and one showing the backside of the phone (Friday, next week). The coming pictures will be of higher quality than the first posted one, but mind you that they are still screen shots from a video, so it’s far from perfect. Furthermore, we hope to be able to post a full video of this product within the next 2-3 weeks, but this has yet to be decided. You may be wondering why we’ve decided not to give it all at once. The reason is quite simple – this little ‘game’ we’re playing has to be fun for both us and Sony Ericsson, meaning that we do not wish to hurt Sony Ericsson in any way by publishing crucial pictures of upcoming phones.

I hope you found this at use, and that we’ve answered most of your questions.

W380 – Just Peachy

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

I had a wee play with the W380 today and I am well and truly smitten with it. It’s not a handset for the technoista as it is a decidedly low-end handset in terms of features, but that’s not where its strength lies. Granted that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think many will agree that the W380 cuts a rather fine dash with its trim figure and simple, clean, and almost retro looks. It’s not a phone that many of you may have considered buying because of the feature set, but I urge you to take another look if you are seeking a simple, yet elegant, handset for going out or on other occasions when your main handset may be too bulky or lacking in charm.

P.S. As always, enjoy my incredible photographic skills!

Another USEB W890 Preview

Monday, March 17th, 2008

dsc_0100.jpg

I received the W890 only a few days ago and it was love at first sight. I love the materials used and the colour variants look absolutely smashing. Build quality feels very good and phone is extremely sturdy. About 30 people have had a look at my W890 so far and all were impressed by the quality of it.

W890 is really thin and has a nice format and weight. It’s less than 80 grams and fits perfectly into any pocket. It feels nice to hold in your palm due to the rounded edges and the nice choice of materials (it’s metal!). Its “wow”-factor beats just about everything else on the market and – in my opinion – it looks so much better than the W880.

dsc_0101.jpg

This is a Walkman phone so it is of course marketed at music lovers. It comes with a 2 GB memory card which can hold about 500 songs in MP3 format or up to 1,000 – 2,000 songs in advanced AAC codec formats. The speaker isn’t bad but it’s not perfect. It lacks bass and depth. However, if you decide to listen to the music with the bundled earphones everything sounds excellent and the volume level is decent.
The camera is a fixed focus camera with a resolution of 3.15 mega pixels. I’m finding it hard to see why Sony Ericsson had to up the ante on the amount of pixels. In my opinion they should have stuck with 2 mega pixels like on the W880, but again – it is a major selling point for unknowing consumers. The camera performs OK without being superb in any way whatsoever.

Call quality seems pretty good. Volume might be a little low (I’m in doubt whether it’s the phone or me) and the display seems a bit low on brightness (again, this might just be me). Speaking of the display, everything else about it is excellent! The colour saturation is very nice and it is unbelievably crisp. With regards to colour saturation I’d say that it’s on par with the excellent display on the K850. However the K850’s display has its pros and goes out as the winner in this small comparison.

dsc_0107.jpg

Overall, W890 feels like a really neat phone. Personally, I feel like this is a must-have in my collection and I will now have to do a dig in my wallet to find some money to pay for one of these babies. Price is about £200 – £250, which isn’t too bad.
Expect an in-depth going review of W890 with lots of photos late this week. A gallery of the phone will come later today.

W890 Preview

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

I had a bit of a play with the W890 today and I have to say, it’s a jolly decent wee handset. I snapped some quick pictures of the handset for this preview, they are up to my usual high standard (that is they’re mince), but better quality pictures should be available for the full review.

Let’s get my gripes out of the way first shall we? The speaker volume isn’t too good in my opinion, being a little on the quiet side. At maximum volume the speakers do perform reasonably well, but I would have expected better performance overall in this department from a dedicated music handset. The speakers themselves are a little disappointing in that they are simply small holes on the front and back near at the top of the handset. The speakers aren’t stellar although they are better than one might expect in terms of their quality. It would have been nice if there were side positioned stereo speakers, but one can’t have everything in such a small package I suppose.

The size of the handset is obviously a major selling point in that it is very thin (only slightly thicker than its predecessor, the W880). I like the tiny stature of the W880, but not it’s small buttons, which is why I am keener on the W890 as it has larger buttons that are easier to operate. Not that one doesn’t occasionally press the wrong button on the navi pad, but for the most part it’s ok to use.

For it being such a small handset it does pack in some nice features, not the least of which is HSDPA data access, which makes web browsing nice and speedy. The usual features are present; the Walkman player, Track ID, etc. It’s not the most advanced handset in the world, but it doesn’t have to be. It sells itself with a well rounded package of features in an attractive form factor that will appeal to those looking for something stylish.
