Vivaz Announced Ahead of Schedule … Viva!

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

So it’s finally official … Sony Ericsson’s 2nd Symbian smartphone Kurara, or as she is now to be officially known, ‘Vivaz’ (yes it is an odd sounding name, but we’ll get to the name a little later on), will launch ’sometime this quarter’, which would be in keeping with our post from yesterday, which gave a time frame of week nine i.e. the first week in March. The initial leaked shots that had been doing the rounds really didn’t do Vivaz justice, it looks pretty stunning in the press release photos. Interestingly enough it looks like the announcement was made a little sooner than was intended since it’s been pulled as of the time of writing, but no doubt it will appear again soon enough. Anyway let’s begin by looking at the specs list:

  • Symbian 5th
  • 3.2″ touchscreen, 640×360
  • 8.1 MP camera
  • 720p HD video recording
  • 720 MHz processor
  • WiFi
  • AGPS
  • TV-out

As you will see from the press pictures it comes in a variety of colours and as I said before it actually doesn’t look half bad, from the front at least. I still think the back looks … well, unfinished to be honest. For some reason the dark blue variant catches my eye, but I digress … The official names for the colours are Galaxy Blue, Moon Silver, Venus Ruby and Cosmic Black (not the astronomical references).

Ok now the name! It’s certainly an odd sounding name for a phone and in a spot of deja vu it’s like the Idou/Satio situation; Kurara sounds better to the ear. Still time will tell, but it’s hard to imagine many men sitting at the pub and their mates asking what phone they have only to be told ‘it’s a Vivaz!’. I’ll leave you in the very capable hands of Daniel Sandblom of Sony Ericsson for a demo of the handset.

Robyn: New Android Handset

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Another day, another leak. This time it’s Robyn, the next Sony Ericsson Android handset (after the X10). It looks remarkably similar to the X10 in fact albeit a good deal smaller. It also comes in a variety of colours; alongside the lack of XPERIA branding this signifies Robyn is aimed at a lower market segment than the X10.

Specs wise we’re looking at:

  • 5 MP camera
  • 3.5 mm jack
  • HSPA
  • WiFi
  • USB charging

Along with Kanna Robyn is set to be announced at MWC in February. Let’s hope that these latest handsets don’t go the way of the X2

It’s not just the names that are similar, the specifications are largely similar; the main difference being that Kanna sports a slide out QWERTY keyboard. SE to Produce 100,000 X10s

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

As the initial excitement over the X10 announcement fades a little we can start looking at some of the details behind this handset. Eldar Murtazin, the Editor-in-Chief of Mobile-Review, has shed some light on how the X10 may impact the market. Writing in his Twitter feed Eldar revealed that Sony Ericsson will produce 100,000 X10 units for the global market. That’s for the entire world. Is that a lot? Well that depends upon how popular the X10 becomes of course. If it proves to widely popular then it most certainly isn’t enough. For example, the N95, in its heyday, sold around 1 million units in the UK alone.

Still the biggest question on everyone’s minds though is whether Sony Ericsson will be able to get the X10 out in January or whether they will slip back into the old habit of a long delay.

Engadget Hands-On With the X10

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Engadget have gotten their paws on an X10 and have conducted a hands-on preview of the handset. They’ve taken some videos too, which give you a much better idea of the handset than the marketing videos Sony Ericsson has released. Head on over to Engadget to read the full hands-on and see what they thought of the X10. You can take a peek at the videos below.

Rachael Announcement 3rd November

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Well here we go … only 8 days until Rachael is officially announced! Sony Ericsson have launched a teaser page with 3rd November given as the date of something new. Indeed Sony Ericsson pose the question “Sometimes there’s a thin line between the extraordinary and the magical. Did we cross it?”

Why is everyone so sure it’s Rachael? Well the source code for the page just so happens to mention Rachael by name. Sadly not the official desiganation, but it’s definitely Rachael. Actually, there’s more than one reference to ‘infinity’ on the page; an infinity symbol and the source code mentions “Rachael – infinity”. Hopefully ‘infinity’ is a tag line and not the name of Rachael … that just seems too cheesey.

So it looks like the long wait for Rachael is almost over …

Another SE Android Handset Before The Year Is Out?

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Sony Ericsson have hinted that there may be a possibility, probably very slight though, that Rachael may not be alone in the Android stakes when announced next month. Commenting to British mobile magazine ‘Mobile Today’, Sony Ericsson mentioned that there would be ‘at least one’ Android’ handset announced by the end of this year. Of course that statement doesn’t tie Sony Ericsson to actually announcing a second Android handset alongside Rachael, but it would actually make a good bit of sense if they did so.

So far Rachael has appeared on the tubes a number of times through various ‘leaks’. By the time the announcement date rolls around, probably sometime next month, it will already be a handset that the digerati are acquainted with. How much more impact would they have if they also decided to slip in another Android handset on the side, maybe nothing as flash as Rachael, but still something to catch the eye. Indeed, if it were a non-touchscreen Android handset, as some have speculated Susan may be, then it would actually be, in some ways, more newsworthy than Rachael herself.

Of course this could all be pie in the sky, but we’ll just have to wait to find out … Let us know what side your money is on in the comments.

Video: Susan Introduction

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Earlier today we posted up a picture of a new Sony Ericsson handset, codenamed Susan,. Speculation is rife in the blogosphere as to whether this is a new Android handset from Sony Ericsson or whether it’s just running a new version of Sony Ericsson’s own platform. At any rate here’s a short introductory video for the handset.
