MH907 Motion Controlled Headphones Announced

Monday, September 21st, 2009

MH907 Headphones

Sony Ericsson unveiled the world’s first motion controlled headphones today, the MH907. Over the past year some Sony Ericsson announcements have been met with a groan, others with high expectations that fell flat, but today’s announcement of the MH907, codenamed ‘Gandalf’, actually seems, for lack of a better description, pretty cool.

The premise behind the headphones is rather simple, you put both headphones in your ears, and thanks to the SenseMe technology, your music starts playing. If you remove the headphones the music stops. Pretty sweet eh? There’s more though because if you just put an earphone in one ear it activates the call mode to allow you to take a call.  Even better there’s no chance of calls being answered accidentally because the headphones respond to body contact so if you have both in all you will hear is sweet music.

Now for the bad news … they use the Fastport connector so they will only work with Sony Ericsson handsets. It seems like such a wasted opportunity to bring these headphones to the masses. Sony Ericsson are probably thinking that they may act as an incentive for people to buy a Sony Ericsson phone, but how many times has an accessory acted as a deal breaker?

Sony Ericsson to Change Music Forever on 21st September?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Music Forever

Sony Ericsson are all set to change the way we listen to music forever come 21st September. Cliche? Probably, but if it means a new handset or product who cares? Hopefully it isn’t just a cliche and we really do get to see something that makes us go ‘wow’, it would be good to see Sony Ericsson getting back to form by doing that. It would also be nice to see Sony Ericsson giving a little love to the music side of things after what’s been a year or so dominated by big cameras and ‘artsy’ phones. Anyhoo … you can check out the (spartan) website here and sign up for the webcast.

Media Go™ hands on

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

title_small

Together with the W995, Sony Ericsson announced that its latest Walkman phone will be accompanied by a new media manager software called “Media Go™”. In cooperation with se-community.com, we have exclusively tested a pre-release version of the software. In order to give you the possibility to get a live impression of the tool, we will provide you with interactive screenshots where you can navigate through the different screens. You will find the link to this unique way of exploring Media Go™ at the end of this article.

The introduction of Media Go™ shows the intention of Sony (Ericsson) to participate in the growing market of online music platforms. Apple’s combination of iTunes and iPhone made a point – if you are familiar with Apple’s solution, Media Go™ will be an easy transition for you. Here is an overview on Sony’s new software functionality:

  • Media Management of Video, Audio, Photo and Podcast media on a Windows PC
  • Hassle-free synchronisation of above media files between PC and several mobile devices
  • Automatic conversion and optimization of media files to the destination device
  • Easy CD ripping
  • Integration of “PlayNow™” online music/game/ringtone store
  • Creation of SensMe™ playlists on the computer

Following formats can be processed by Media Go™:

  • Audio: AAC, FLAC, MP3, Wave, WMA
  • Video: AVI (DivX, XviD, MJPEG with necessary codecs installed), MPEG-4 AAC & AVC, QuickTime Movie, WMV
  • Photo: GIF, JPEG, PNG, Targa, TIFF, Windows Bitmap

All other formats will still be transferred to the mobile device, but without optimization (such as re-sizing, downsampling etc.)

When it comes to podcasts, the new tool offers the possibility to subscribe to a number of pre-defined podcast channels, or you can add your own list of podcasts. The synchronisation of all media files between your PC and your mobile phone(s) works just as in iTunes: for each device you can define which playlists, podcasts, photo albums and videos you want to sync. In addition, Media Go™ offers the possibility to automatically sync all the new files that are added to the PC’s library. Another nice feature: every media file in the library can be transfered from or to a mobile device via a right-click. Last but not least, if you are missing an album cover image, Media Go™ can get it for you from Gracenote.

Media Go entry

By clicking on above picture, you are able to access some interactive screenshots of Sony’s MediaGo™. You can follow the  navigational entries on the left hand side (marked by red arrows in above image) in order to see how the different screens look like. There are also some other links to e.g. preference screens inside of the application’s main window. We hope this will provide you with a better insight to the upcoming Media Go™ software!

Sony Ericsson announces the W508: Small, sleek & sexy

w5082

Today Sony Ericsson announces the successor of W380 – the W508. Similar to its predecessor, the phone’s exterior features 3 buttons which control the music playback and one OLED display, hidden underneath the glossy top part. Unlike the W380 though, it comes in a much sleeker, yet less extravagant body.

- “The W508 Walkman phone builds on our iconic Walkman range and the successful W380,” said Alexandre Cardon, Global Product Marketing Manager for Music at Sony Ericsson, and continues: “For those who like to express their style and individuality through their mobile phone we’ve brought our creative design team in to design stylish changeable covers so that W508 offers a truly interactive and individual experience.”

As a midrange Walkman phone, the W508 runs on the A2 platform and thus features SensMe and Shake Control (now with light effects!) in its Music player menu. TrackID is there as well, now also boasting text search. The phone comes with a 1GB M2 memory card. Some people will be delighted to know that it also comes with 1 additional Style-Up cover, which can be swapped with the phone’s generic one at any time. They’re quite well designed, too. (more…)

PlayNow Arena expands, opening doors for additional five countries

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Sony Ericsson today announced plans about expanding PlayNow Arena to open doors for an additional five countries later this year. The five countries are the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland.

Commenting on the expansion were Rob Wells, Senior Vice President, Digital, at Universal Music Group International, and Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President and Head of Creation & Development at Sony Ericsson.

- The launch of PlayNow arena is a milestone in a la carte music services to mobile phones. The combination of TrackID and the variety of digital products on offer through PlayNow arena is a highly compelling proposition on its own, but when the full track downloads are available DRM-free, the offer is even more compelling for consumers, said Rob Wells in a press release.

- Expanding our PlayNow service portfolio by adding PlayNow plus and by launching PlayNow arena in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and the UK during the fourth quarter, are key elements of the Sony Ericsson service strategy. These steps and the addition of Universal’s catalogue to the music offering in both services gives us every possibility to provide customers and consumers with what we feel is important and requested – an unparalleled user experience on Sony Ericsson devices, Rikko Sakaguchi added.

So, soon PlayNow Arena will be available in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the UK.

Sony Ericsson launches PlayNow Plus with unlimited music downloads

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

About two weeks ago, we posted news about a possible unlimited music download service from Sony Ericsson that’d soon be announced – well, that happened today, and it’s called PlayNow Plus.

The service will initially be exclusively launched with Telenor in Sweden during the fourth quarter of the year, but it will be launched in other parts of the world on several carriers beginning in 2009.

PlayNow Plus will be extremely easy to use – you simply download the songs from your phone or PC, and that’s it!

- With PlayNowTM plus, there will be no more barriers, we’re giving consumers the freedom to instantly discover, download, play and recommend all the music they want-anytime, anywhere, said Lennard Hoornik, Corporate Vice President and Head of Marketing at Sony Ericsson in a press release.

As said, the service is initially only available in Sweden with Telenor. It’ll cost about £10 a month (data transfer included, as far as we’re aware), and the W902 – which is the phone PlayNow plus will launch with – is going to come with a total of 1,000 songs preloaded, just to get you started. Once you’re no longer with Telenor, you get to legally keep the 100 most played songs.

Oh yes, I’m excited about this, and I find the pricing to be top-notch! :-)

PlayNow Arena set to deliver unlimited music downloads to Walkman phone owners

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

According to the Financial Times, Sony Ericsson is set to announce an unlimited music download service later this month. The service is expected to be an expansion of the already existing mobile downloads service (PlayNow Arena), and we expect it to be for Walkman phones only, although there’s no saying on this yet. It all sounds very exciting, and indeed very interesting! This could be something that’ll add extra value to Walkman phones, other than ShakeControl, SensMe and ClearAudio.

What do you think?
