Facebook released new Java app “Facebook for every phone”

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Two days ago, Facebook released Java app called “Facebook for every phone”. As it’s name says, it’s compatible with most Java-enabled phones. The software is bought from Snaptu Ltd. for $60-70  million in March. The software is also presented in free Java app “Snaptu”.

Facebook is now much more functional for much non-smartphone phones, which had access to  Facebook only trough their Web browsers. Application provides access to News Feed, Photos, Requests and much more, making it look much more smartphone alike. Two features that are present only in “Facebook for every phone” (and not in “Snaptu” ) are adding friends from contacts in phone and a link to Snaptu’s mini app store.

Facebook has made agreement with 20 mobile operators across 13 countries: Facebook will subsidize payments from using their app for three months, in  order to encourage users to use their Internet access plans.

It is also possible that release is an “counterattack” to Google’s new social network, Google+ (since the actual software is bought in March, and released in July)

Video: Sony Ericsson’s Upcoming Multi-Device

Friday, May 16th, 2008

I bet some of you have checked out the JavaOne conferences, but obviously no-one has gone through them in depth. In one of the videos, Rikko Sakaguchi at Sony Ericsson actually leaks an upcoming phone, well, sort of… After having showcased the video below at the JavaOne conference, Sakaguchi says “actually… you saw the device in the video? That’s something that we’re going to launch this year.” However! If we look closely at a few screenshots from the video, you’ll notice that there’s actually two devices, and not one. Could this be different prototypes for one phone? I mean, Sakaguchi did say “the device”.

Remember, Rikko Sakaguchi is the Senior Vice-President and Head of Product & Application Planning at Sony Ericsson, so it doesn’t get much more official than this.

I must remind you though that this video is almost 2 years old, so a few things might have changed. Now, feel free to let your minds wander.

Video: Sony Ericsson At JavaOne

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

I just saw that Johan from Sony Ericsson’s Developer World has posted a post including this very video of Sony Ericsson at the JavaOne conference a few days ago. The video is basically an interview of Christopher David, who’s responsible for the long-term platform planning Java. Check out the video, where Christopher talks about the new Mobile Services Architecture (MSA), as well as the new Project Capuchin. If you’re not in it for the developer talk, then have a look anyway – most of Sony Ericsson’s upcoming phones, such as C702, C902, G700, G900 and W980, are also featured in this video. If you’re a bit sentimental, you might also want to check out the K850 controlling the classic Sony Ericsson Bluetooth car, CAR-100.

Java ME + Adobe Flash Lite = Project Capuchin

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Sony Ericsson yesterday announced its brand new technology, codenamed Project Capuchin.

This technology will bridge the Java ME platform and the Adobe Flash Lite platform in a new developer platform for fast & clean user interfaces, both graphically and code-wise. The technology will among other things make it possible to use Java ME in the application codes, while being able to use Adobe’s Flash Lite technology for the application interface.

- Sony Ericsson is excited to introduce our new bridging technology to the global developer community as it further strengthens our relationship with this community and underscores our ongoing commitment to support an open, healthy and thriving mobile ecosystem, said Rikko Sakaguchi, SVP and Head of Portfolio and Proposition at Sony Ericsson in a press release. We are dedicated to exploring opportunities that enable us to provide innovative and energized user experiences. To achieve this, we work with world class partners and technologies, on both platform and product development, Sakaguchi continued.

Sony Ericsson plans to make this technology available in second half 2008 (new phones!!), and will demonstrate the technology at the JavaOne Developer Event in San Francisco, May 6 – 9, booth 718 in the Pavilion.

Sony Ericsson Content Awards 2007

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

content_awards.jpg

Sony Ericsson has launched a new and exciting site at their Developer website. It’s actually an awards showcase where some of the best Sony Ericsson content in 2007 will be awarded. There are five content focus areas:

  • Gaming
  • Imaging
  • Productive Mobility
  • Music and Audio
  • Themes and Graphics

Both J2ME and UIQ 3 content is featured and so are themes for both non smartphones and smartphones.

At the Flash website there are also a few videos of Mats Lindoff (Corporate Vice President) and Jens Greve (Senior Manager and Head of Sony Ericsson Developer World) talking about the future of mobile phones and mobile content. Quite interesting, if you ask me.

In my opinion all the nominees have a good chance of winning, but there can only be one in each category – and you can take part of deciding which one!

You’ll find the flash website right here and more information about the Awards here.

Security hole found in Sony Ericsson phones

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

It seems that two research scientists – Adrian Nowak and Karsten Sohr – at Bremen University in Germany has found a security hole in Sony Ericsson phones that can give applications read & write access to the system files, and in worst cases exploit this access. However this can also give users the ability to change or delete some of the “unwanted” system files such as protected ring tones, parts of operator branding and alike.

t650_java_permission_denied.jpg

The “affected” phones – so to speak – are phones sold between 2005 – 2007, which means that it’s everything from the good old K750 to newer phones such as T650 – maybe also the K850 and W910, but that’s not for sure. Only Java phones (those running OSE and not Symbian UIQ) has this “problem”.

Personally I don’t think it’s that much of a problem as the user must grant the application permission to access these files. So please do not worry about this – it’s still totally safe to use your phone and install applications. It just shows that the students at Bremen University should have better things to do than this ;-)

Any J2ME developers out there?

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

I am about to create my first ever J2ME application, and I would like to create a simple applet that will make use of the integrated motion sensor in A200 phones such as K850 and W910. My idea is to create an application with a ball that moves accordingly to the phone’s movement – just like Marble Madness, but much simpler (at least to start off with!).

If anybody who’s reading this has any sort of knowledge about J2ME developing and the JSR-256 motion sensor API, please contact me :-)
