Sony Ericsson organised a little Zombie dance off for the launch!
That was a party at the Sony Ericsson stand at Gamescom!

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 available on the Xperia PLAY

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011
Another game is available for the Xperia Play.
This time it’s Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
It’s one of the most acclaimed action series of all time.
It features five intensely detailed battle zones and 14 single player missions. The game allows players to move through a rich and intense single-player story, using strategy and cooperation to bring down buildings, cause realistic destruction and battle enemies. So the players will have much fun and the game shouldn’t be too short.

Gameplay:

You can download the game via the ‘Get Games’ app for £5 via EA Mobile.

Happy playing

Warm up before playing on Xperia Play

Friday, June 3rd, 2011
Given in a world where everything now-a-days is full of Health and Safety (or “political red tape” as I call it), is it really surprising to see the following video from Sony Ericsson about their Xperia Play?

Well, quite frankly, no it isn’t. However, what I will say is that surely it is just a case of  ”use common sense”. I mean, we dont normally warm up before strolling to work, or indeed act similarly for the PSP/PS1/2/3, so why would we need to do this for ourselves, unless we are planning on spending hours playing with the Xperia Play?

Asphalt 6 on Xperia Play

Saturday, February 19th, 2011
This video seems more of a commercial, rather than an example of how a game handles on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, but I thought I would share it with you all anyway.

Sony Ericsson Working On Android 3.0 PlayStation Handset

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Sony Ericsson has managed to cram just about every Sony brand name onto a phone over the past few years. We’ve seen Cybershot branded cameraphones and Walkman branded music phones, in Japan they’ve even had Bravia branded handsets. One brand has been missing from the portfolio though and it’s the one that most people desperately want to see … PlayStation. According to information obtained by Engadget that may become a reality sooner than we think.

Sony Ericsson are apparently working on a new gaming platform for Android that could redefine Android gaming. The work involves developing not only the platform itself, but an entire ecosystem to support it as well as a gaming device that is said to be in the late planning stages and receiving input from Google themselves.

In terms of the handset it’s been described as a mixture of Samsung’s Captivate and Sony’s PSP Go. What that means is that it’s a slider phone (in landscape mode), but instead of a keyboard sliding out it’s game controls the user will see i.e. a d-pad, a ‘long touch pad‘, the familiar PSP buttons, and shoulder buttons. The display is described as being large, somewhere between 3.7″ and 4.1″ and will be WVGA or better. The onboard camera is a 5 MP effort, which is pretty much the industry standard these days, but which could be beefed up further before the final design. In terms of the processor it looks like Sony Ericsson is going with the tried and tested option of a 1 GHz Snapdragon.

The aesthetics of the handset are also covered and help paint a picture of what it actually looks like in place of an actual picture of the device. It’s mostly black with silver highlighting, but the slide out game control area is white and silver. The device is tentatively being branded as an Xperia device, but it should carry the PlayStation branding too. Engadget quote those who have seen the device as describing it as “pretty damn sexy“.

Ok so that’s the hardware side of things, let’s now turn to the software. In sharp contrast to the X10 range of handsets this new device will be running Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) making it one of the most advanced Android handsets out in the market. There will be, as you may have already suspected, a custom UI skin from Sony Ericsson. Interestingly there will be a new section added to the Android Market to house the games for the new platform this handset will usher in. The games contained within this new section wil only be available for this new Sony Ericsson handset, at least to begin with. Other Android handsets should have access to them too if they meet the necessary hardware specifications and button configuration requirements.

The games themselves are said to be in the same bracket as PSX and PSP games in terms of graphics. In other words Android is getting full blown 3D gaming. The current range of games being touted for inclusion in this new Market section are predictably older titles, but there are some new ones in there too. The titles include God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and LittleBigPlanet (Ixalon’s favourite!). There are also apparently plans afoot for game titles that incorporate augmented reality.

The big question at this point is of course ‘when’? Well that is, as ever, a difficult question to answer. Engadget are citing October as a possible release window for this handset, but they do stress that this is unconfirmed and as we all know Sony Ericsson are not renowned for getting products to market on time.

Sony Ericsson launches Entertainment Unlimited

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

entertainment-unlimited

Sony Ericsson today launched ‘Entertainment Unlimited’, and it is probably one of the biggest and most important announcements yet. Sony Ericsson calls it the pinnacle of what they have been working towards since the beginning of the joint venture back in 2001.

Entertainment Unlimited is all about bringing together content, applications and entertainment experiences. The new consumer proposition is based around three new key promises.

The first is all about uniting the best of all worlds into one offering. This could be uniting the Walkman music experience with the Cyber-shot imaging experience, and perhaps even add a bit of gaming on top. The W995, which was also announced today, is a clear example of that.

The second is about integrating the mobile phone into other devices in your home to seamlessly share content between devices, such as a TV, PC or your HiFi audio system.

The third is also about sharing content, but this time through online web applications and Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow offering.

- “Entertainment Unlimited lets us reinforce our position as THE communication entertainment brand,” said Lennard Hoornik Head of Global Marketing and Vice President at Sony Ericsson in a press release.

- “Everything that we have done to date has brought us to this point – we created the music phone category in 2005 selling over 100 million Walkman phones and we are now ready to unveil the next chapter in the evolution of the company – Entertainment Unlimited – giving consumers unlimited opportunities to share their entertainment experiences,” he continued.

Also commenting on the launch of Entertainment Unlimited is none other than Sony Ericsson’s President, Hideki ‘Dick’ Komiyama:

- “Entertainment Unlimited is at the core of Sony Ericsson’s philosophy, building on the strength of our great entertainment assets such as Walkman and Cyber-shot phones and our unique service and applications integration. Many of the strategic initiatives we’ve announced in the past year have laid the internal framework to launch this new consumer proposition to the market and Sony Ericsson is now ready to drive the next wave of market development with Entertainment Unlimited,” he said in a press release.

Sony Ericsson also showcased a new mobile phone under the concept name Idou today. This is supposed to give us a glimpse of what Sony Ericsson has in store for us, and it is one of a number of projects that will be launched this year under the umbrella of Entertainment Unlimited.

Two new additions to Sony Ericsson’s Campaigns site

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Sony Ericsson have recently added 2 new mini-sites to their ever-growing portfolio of… well, mini-sites, or campaign sites, as they like to call them.

So, the first one is about this app they developed, called ‘Find It’. As the site says, it “can help you locate a whole range of items: your tent at a festival; your car in a crowded car park; your hotel in a busy tourist area; your favourite spot on the beach .” Basically, it’s an app that allows you to tag locations, so that you can find them more easily later on (note, locations, not the TV remote). It requires the HGE-100 GPS enabler accessory in order to work and no, you can’t use your phone’s inbuilt GPS if you have one.

The second campaign site is about some new and hopefully many upcoming motion-controlled… stuff. Wallpapers, games… other things you might want to be motion-controlled, you name it. They’ve even put up a video to hype you up. You know, one of those artistic type of videos that glue your eyes to the screen, despite the fact that they tell you little or nothing about what they’re actually about. After watching the video you are presented with two links. One of them takes you to the main page of PlayNow arena – nothing special. The second brings you to SE’s Fun & Downloads site to browse the (surprisingly many) motion-controlled games. Thankfully, there are a few free wallpapers as well, which are quite nifty.
