Sony develops Next-generation Back-Illuminated CMOS Image Sensor

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Sony announced its next-generation back-illuminated CMOS image sensor. With this new image sensor they promise further enhancement in image quality, superior functionalities and a more compact size that will lead to an enhanced camera. This development is aimed at the highly complicated smartphone market. With the advent of this new sensors Sony hopes to boost their smartphone sales and there is no doubt they will achieve it.

As the first step, Sony has developed a model with built-in signal processing functionality. Samples will be shipped from March, 2012. Models have been developed with Sony’s unique RGBW Coding function, which facilitates low noise, high quality image capture even in low light condition, and HDR (High Dynamic Range) Movie function, for excellent color management in extremely bright light conditions.

What’s new:

  • Large-scale signal processing circuits required for higher image quality and better functionality are built-in.
  • More compact image sensor chip size.
  • Even higher image quality of the pixel section by adopting manufacturing processes specialized for superior image quality.
  • Faster speeds and lower power consumption by adopting the leading process for the circuit section.

Conceptual diagram of the sensor:

RGBW Coding function

“RGBW Coding” function which adds W (White) pixels to the conventional range of RGB (Red-Green-Blue) pixels has realized higher sensitivity, enabling high-quality shooting with low noise even in dark indoor or night settings.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) Movie

“HDR Movie” function enables brilliant colors to be captured even in settings with a wide range of light including bright light.

More leaks of Xperia Nozomi

Xperia NozomiNozomi with ICS

More pictures of apparent LT26 are out. This one on the right is particularly interesting, as it shows Nozomi with ICS (judging by the lockscreen), with recognizable Xperia UI colours, opposite of last information stating that ICS will come to SE devices skinless.
Other than that, cropped specs on the side suggest that it will have dual-core processor, and cropped title could as well be ” Xperia Cloud”.

Next leak is all about specs:

1.5 Ghz dual-core processor
1Gb RAM, 32Gb ROM
4.3″ Reality display with Mobile Bravia engine, but this time HD resolution of 720 by 1280 pixels.
Whopping 12 megapixel Exmor R camera, with 1080p full HD video recording
720p HD front-facing camera
1750 mAh battery

Date of official announcement? Probably between 10 and 13 January, as that’s when the 2012 CES is holding up, and we traditionally expect reveal of the next Xperia flagship phone right on those three days.

SE Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – Date Rumours Begin!

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Following on from the official announcement of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on SE’s Xperia 2011 range, we now are starting to see a couple of rumours fly when we will get the newest version of Android will hit our handsets.

The first date came from SE Italy, via a reply on their Facebook page by Maurizio De Palma, the Head of Marketing for SE Italy, saying that the update should arrive by March 2012. As pointed out by our source, this would normally be within the release of a flagship phone (at this time of writing, expected to be the much rumoured Xperia Nozomi) based on the past two years (Xperia X10 and Xperia Arc)

However, just to throw another spanner into the works, a Sony employee has tweeted some comments about Ice Cream Sandwich and suggests a date of the first week of January 2012, but finds it rather confusing with the March date being mentioned. He also said that SE are working on a “skinless” version of ICS and that there is a chance of getting Android 2.3.4 to the X10 etc Personally though I wouldn’t get your hopes up about the latter.

It is nice to see some rumours about when we will get the update. However I would still prefer an official announcement, and it kept to.

The fact that the Sony employee is talking about a “skinless version of ICS” does puzzle me though. Recently I brought the Xperia Pro, and, going through the (generic) user guide for Android 2.3.4, it seems to match it pretty much apart from the Facebook Inside Xperia. I can’t honestly see SE ditching Facebook Inside Xperia, unless Google have forced them to. Anyway, speaking of the Xperia Pro, I will be posting a review of it soon.

As for the current rumoured dates; lets take those as a pinch of salt. I can’t see SE giving away ICS for its current platform before its even released its new range yet, with we hope ICS on it already. I suspect the update will be delivered in late Q1 or early Q2. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t mind having it in January or March though.

[Leak] Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot smartphone?

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011
Many Sony Ericsson fans asked for a new Cyber-shot phone and now it may become real! Soemone leaked some very blurry and unclear pictures where you can see a phone and the texts ‘Sony Ericsson’ and ‘Cyber-shot’ on it. Probably it’s a fake or a early prototype and it looks a bit ‘iPhoneish’ in my opinion.

Unfortunately we can’t see the backside so we don’t know if there is a Xenon flash, how many megapixels it has and if it has optical zoom. As you can see in the picture below there are the common Android buttons so maybe it’ll have latest Android from SE. Anyways it looks a bit ugly, what do you think?

CEO Says SE Needs Better & More Expensive Handsets!

Monday, October 19th, 2009

SE’s new chap at the top, Bert Nordberg, is increasingly looking to be someone that is going to do some ass kicking at Sony Ericsson. Why do I say this? Well let’s look at an interview he recently gave to a Swedish website. In the interview Mr Nordberg made some comments that should give Sony Ericsson’s beleaguered customers a little bit of hope that we may at last, at long last, be seeing the company turn in the right direction.

For one Mr Nordberg wants to see Sony Ericsson return to profitability by next year. That’s a bold statement to make considering the losses the company has sustained over the past year ad the fact that the global economic recovery is still in its early days. Indeed the website conducting the interview made a point to note that most analysts are still looking at 2011 before SE can once again turn a profit. At any rate it’s a sign that Mr Nordberg is aiming high at least.

Next on his list is to cut the number of managers at Sony Ericsson. He says he wants a ‘flatter’ structure, most likely meaning a lot less bureaucracy (which if you’ve ever dealt with Sony Ericsson you will know can be headache inducing).  It’s also about economics though, reducing the number of managers will save Sony Ericsson money. As you may recall Sony Ericsson has already implemented job cuts, with more than 2,000 jobs already having gone. It’s never a good thing when someone loses their job of course, but hopefully these measures see the company turn a profit again all the sooner and enable them to start creating jobs again.

Mr Nordberg saved the best for last though when he talked about the main road to profitability …better and more expensive handsets! His actual statement being:

We should spend more on advanced phones and raise the average selling price … We will not chase market share by selling 25 dollar phones in India

It almost brings a tear to your eye. It actually sounds like the Sony Ericsson of old again. It looks like the big bold handsets that enter the market to kick ass are coming back thanks to a CEO who, as I said, looks to be kicking some ass too with his call for “swift and decisive action”.

SE phones will read your facial expression to select a playlist!

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

se-patent1

A recent patent application filed by Sony Ericsson indicates a technology that will enable front-facing cameras to click a user’s photo and analyse it to find the user’s mood and selec a playlist accordingly. A method may include playing a first song on a device, capturing an image of a user, performing facial expression recognition of the user based on the image, and selecting a second song based on a facial expression of the user.  Pretty neat!  This tops even the Sense Me application in my opinion.

Just recently, Sony Ericsson Japan filed a report of their upcoming SOX01 phone for AU by KDDI.  What does the “X” mean?  I’ll let you guys interpret that.
