A few weeks ago Sony Ericsson said that phones with unlocked bootloader (but without custom ROM) are updatable with SEUS. But this information seems wrong for now. SEUS don’t offer update-support at the moment. This was confirmed by Karl-Johan Dahlström, a SE Developer. This is because SEUS don’t know which firmware is on your phone when the bootloader is unlocked.
Sony Ericsson is currently working on a function that allows you to switch back to the original ROM but there are no release dates for this feature. The users with locked bootloader wont have this problem and should always know that support from SE is decreased with unlocking it.
If you are sad now because you want the latest firmware (2.3.3 – probably soon available for your region) then you still have xda-developers! You can easily flash the latest 2.3.3 ROM from SE with Flashtool.

Since today the new update for XPERIA Arc (not PLAY) is available but currently only for Hong Kong. Its release for other regions is expected in the next days. With it you’ll get the version 3.0.1.A.0.145 as mentioned here:
Android 2.3.3 soon available for Arc & PLAY.
Unfortunately we still don’t have a changelog but it’ll probably be the facebook update. Some other improvements could be faster scrolling and better battery life. And: The video recording lag issue seems not to be fixed. But this thing seems to be fixed: Gingerbreak root method.
If you can’t wait till the official release in your country then you can download the Flashtool-files here: xda-developers.com
If you want a pre-rooted version download this: xda-developers.com
Till now we don’t have any information if it’s available for the XPERIA PLAY.
UPDATE (Product Launch Blog): The main improvements are:
•better Battery performance
•General software stability
•Wi-Fi stability
•HD Video recording performance (Xperia™ arc)
•Touch responsiveness
They also say that the real roll-out started but still no word where.

Earlier on today I brought you news of the
Arc getting rooted. Just as I thought, the
Play has also been rooted,
along with the Neo!
Granted, root is currently available for certain firmware, and I would advise you to keep an eye on our Android Tuts and Guides section for exact details for the rooting process.
If your generic firmware isnt yet rooted, it seems that all that is required is your system.img, which you will get as part of the firmware from SEUS. Im certain that if you ask Bin4ry rather nicely, he will also root your generic firmware (sorry, he wont root branded firmware. I have just asked him)

The XDA devs have done it again!
On Friday I reported on what was happening in the development world of XDA, and that LollyLost100 was working on it. Unfortunately, he couldnt complete it.
Since then Arc rooting has caught the attentions of the developers that rooted the X10. Their initial attempts also saw failure, but then reverted back to the idea that LollyLost100 had, and have reported success.
It is not clear at the moment whether this requires an unlocked bootloader or not at this stage (but I imagine it would!), it could also be that the same method will work on the Xperia Play based on this post.
Anyone wanting to try to root their device should read this guide.
Update: after reading the guide (post link changed on first post) yes you do need the bootloader to be unlocked!

Two days ago, I posted that Sony Ericcson had
unlocked the booterloader on the Xperia Play and Xperia Arc. So, what development has been going on then over at XDA?
Well, in a nut shell, nothing major. It seems our very own Lollylost100 is looking into how to root the Xperia Arc (and he says he is close!), whilst the Xperia Play devs are looking at how to flash a custom ROM.
Seeing as both phones are running practically the same ROM, and what happened when devs cracked the X10, I say it wouldnt be long until both methods are available for both phones.

A new firmware update is already out for at least the UK. Not bad considering the Xperia Arc has been in customers hands for 6 days.
We dont think it is the Android 2.4 update which Sony Ericsson said will be coming near or on the date of release. In fact we have very little details about this update, but at least it shows that Sony Ericsson are looking to keep the phone updated.
Since we know the Arc and Play run similar firmware thanks to the system ROM dumps made by devs at XDA, I think it is safe to assume that the update will reach Play phones very soon.

With Xperia Arc’s flying around the scene at the moment getting reviewed etc, it seems that the Xperia Arc has also caught a certain forums attention.
With the release date soon, the XDA team are currently trying to what they can with the Xperia Arc’s they receive. With, however, the amount of work that went to the Xperia X10 family and the X8, we should be looking at some custom stuff fairly soon.
You can find the new Xperia Arc section here

It was only on Sunday that I was reporting to you about the
Xperia Arc getting system dumped.
One of the developers at XDA forums has managed to port the Xperia Arc ROM to the Xperia X10, with network, data, WiFi, bluetooth, Timescape and GPS all working. Details of which you can find here
I believe this to be an old firmware that they have used for porting, so this might not be how the finished Xperia Arc will look like when released.

With the X10 Eclair update starting to roll out across the world yesterday many were left wondering exactly when they would get the update. There is still no word on exact dates for many countries and/or networks, but you may want to keep an eye on this map.

Dates for specific countries and networks are being filled in as they become available so it should be a handy place to check for a centralised list of who is getting it and when.

Good news everyone! (Anyone else read that in a Dr Farnsworth voice?) Well good news if you have a Satio you want to debrand … Lollylost100 has come up with the goods! He posted up a Polish language guide on how to do it using SEUS yesterday, but the English language version has gone live today. You can take a look at the guide, as well as downloading the custom pack, here. Lollylost100 has also posted up a debranding tutorial for Aino, but as yet that hasn’t been translated into English … soon though …
Thanks Lolly!
