Security hole found in Sony Ericsson phones

Posted by Michell | November 21st, 2007

It seems that two research scientists - Adrian Nowak and Karsten Sohr - at Bremen University in Germany has found a security hole in Sony Ericsson phones that can give applications read & write access to the system files, and in worst cases exploit this access. However this can also give users the ability to change or delete some of the “unwanted” system files such as protected ring tones, parts of operator branding and alike.

The “affected” phones - so to speak - are phones sold between 2005 - 2007, which means that it’s everything from the good old K750 to newer phones such as T650 - maybe also the K850 and W910, but that’s not for sure. Only Java phones (those running OSE and not Symbian UIQ) has this “problem”.

Personally I don’t think it’s that much of a problem as the user must grant the application permission to access these files. So please do not worry about this - it’s still totally safe to use your phone and install applications. It just shows that the students at Bremen University should have better things to do than this ;-)

First Orange W910 shipment recalled

Posted by Michell | November 13th, 2007

Sony Ericsson recalled the first shipment of W910 phones for Orange in the UK because of a series of firmware problems - one of these were that the phone turned itself off after 10 seconds of use. Another was that it would not accept incoming calls. Therefore Sony Ericsson recalled the first shipment and has now fixed the problems, the manufacturer says.

It’s a bit sad that W910 had these problems because it’s one of the highest spec’d non-smartphones Sony Ericsson has to offer at the moment and is the company’s best music phone available at the moment.

W960 in a P1’s body

Posted by Michell | October 29th, 2007

Now here’s something very interesting. It seems that Martin Vagner from uiqmania.cz has successfully flashed his P1 to a W960! However at a first look, Memory Stick Micro cards won’t work and the QWERTY won’t function either. Check out the video below, and see the discussion here.

XS++ 3.0 Beta (Sinyar) released!

Posted by Michell | October 28th, 2007

The guys at SE-NSE have done it again, and have now released a beta version of XS++ 3.0. This one adds many new features, and one of the coolest is probably the full FS file system explorer - now there’s no need for FAR Manager when modding your phone! See the full list of changes and download the beta version right here! Please also do report any bugs either on the forum or by submitting a comment here - then I’ll make sure it gets forwarded.

Just flashed my K800 to a K810!

Posted by Michell | October 15th, 2007

Yeah, I know that it isn’t news that you can flash your K800 into a K810. However, I just wanted to share a few thoughts on the process. Everything went quite easily and fast. It took about 15 - 20 minutes in total, which I think is quite acceptable. You get everything from the K810 (software wise) and with a simple “custom pack”, you can also keep the K800’s keypad light settings, which is a problem without on a K800 flashed into a K810.

I had - of course - modded my K800 before flashing, and now all these modifications are gone. It really doesn’t matter that much, as it takes a few seconds to apply them again.

If anybody feels like flashing their K800, but are a bit afraid of what will happen, then my advice to you is to read the instructions carefully and have everything ready (firmware and custom pack) before beginning. It’s really not hard to do, and I’d recommend everyone to do it! I’ll upload some pictures of my new “K810″ and add them to this post later (added now!). Will also do a post about PhotoFix - what are the real differences?

K850 is available with beta firmware in Bulgaria

Posted by Michell | October 1st, 2007

Apparently K850 is already available in Bulgaria with beta firmware. So is the K770, T650, W910 & W960, it’s written at SE-NSE. Some places are counting on having K850 in stock tomorrow, others will have it the day after tomorrow, some around the 13th and some aren’t even counting on getting it this month! Oh my God, I can’t wait to get a real official release date, so I can get the phone!
