Sony Ericsson confirms Ice Cream Sandwich release dates

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Sony Ericsson had confirmed the ICS update for all the 2011 Xperias a month back.  Since then they had been keeping in touch with the public through their blog posts explaining the development of a ROM and releasing an alpha version for selected models.

Now,  they have shed some light on the release dates. The update process will start in two phases:

  • End March/ Early April 2012  (for Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ neo V and Xperia™ ray)
  • End April/ Early May 2012 (for Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™)

The updates will be a phased roll out over several weeks and all kits for a specific phone model will not get the upgrade at the same time.

SE Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – Date Rumours Begin!

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Following on from the official announcement of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on SE’s Xperia 2011 range, we now are starting to see a couple of rumours fly when we will get the newest version of Android will hit our handsets.

The first date came from SE Italy, via a reply on their Facebook page by Maurizio De Palma, the Head of Marketing for SE Italy, saying that the update should arrive by March 2012. As pointed out by our source, this would normally be within the release of a flagship phone (at this time of writing, expected to be the much rumoured Xperia Nozomi) based on the past two years (Xperia X10 and Xperia Arc)

However, just to throw another spanner into the works, a Sony employee has tweeted some comments about Ice Cream Sandwich and suggests a date of the first week of January 2012, but finds it rather confusing with the March date being mentioned. He also said that SE are working on a “skinless” version of ICS and that there is a chance of getting Android 2.3.4 to the X10 etc Personally though I wouldn’t get your hopes up about the latter.

It is nice to see some rumours about when we will get the update. However I would still prefer an official announcement, and it kept to.

The fact that the Sony employee is talking about a “skinless version of ICS” does puzzle me though. Recently I brought the Xperia Pro, and, going through the (generic) user guide for Android 2.3.4, it seems to match it pretty much apart from the Facebook Inside Xperia. I can’t honestly see SE ditching Facebook Inside Xperia, unless Google have forced them to. Anyway, speaking of the Xperia Pro, I will be posting a review of it soon.

As for the current rumoured dates; lets take those as a pinch of salt. I can’t see SE giving away ICS for its current platform before its even released its new range yet, with we hope ICS on it already. I suspect the update will be delivered in late Q1 or early Q2. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t mind having it in January or March though.

Xperia Mini Pro needs a change of internal hardware to fix the electrostatic noise issue

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011
Back in Septmember the first Xperia Mini Pro users were facing an electrostatic noise problem on their devices.
That means when you recorded a video, an electrostatic crackling could be heard in the background when played back at loud volumes.

Sony Ericsson acknowledged the problem and said that the issue would be solved with the roll out of the 4.0.2.A.X.X firmware in October.
But unfortunately that didn’t fix the issue, it just reduced the electrostatic crackling. The problem still exists but not in a way to detract the user experience according to SE

Since end of September the hardware is fixed and the electrostatic crackling is not there anymore.

It’s official, 2011 Xperia portfolio will get Ice Cream Sandwich!

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Yes,  gentlemen, it’s official. Earlier today, Sony Ericsson posted on their product blog:

“There have been a few questions here on the blog and in our support forums regarding our upgrade plans beyond Gingerbread. We can today confirm that we plan to upgrade the entire 2011 Xperia™ portfolio* to the next version of Android known as Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. We are working on merging our current Xperia™ experience with the new features in Android 4.0. More detailed information regarding this upgrade, timing and global availability will be communicated in due course here on the blog.

* “2011 Xperia™ Portfolio” refers to the following products: Xperia™ arc and arc S, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo and neo V, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ ray as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™”

And that “merging current Xperia experience” should mean that it will not be a stock ROM, whatsoever, I hope update won’t disable features that Xperia ROMs have, and there are many of them.

Only remaining unknown is the date. Well, as I said, I hope they don’t hurry and pack this ROM with all goodies that comes with Xperia. We shall keep you informed on any information that comes available, as well as post some screenshots from various devices as they get ICS.

Market of the Xperia Arc got updated

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011
My Xperia Arc just updated to the latest version of the Android Market which is V3.3.11
The layout has changed a little bit, but not much. You have more apps on the pages now.
Other than that there’s a new icon and some new settings, like:
- auto updates activated by default for all apps
- auto updates just over Wi-Fi
- auto-add shortcuts

Also I find it snappier than V3.1.5.

I don’t know if other Xperia devices got the update yet, but if not, they should get it soon.

No more updates for X10?

Friday, October 21st, 2011

As said by this tweet from SE, X10 is at it’s final official version. It has come a long way from being released as Android 1.6 Donut to having 2.3 Gingerbread, latest Android version until 19.10.2011 (three days ago) when 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is released. This may be disappointing for the X10 owners, but think on the time when your X10 was 2.1, and you wasn’t sure if  2.3 will ever gonna be officially released for your phone? Or when it was 1.6, and everyone was kinda rolling eyes on Sony Ericsson delaying an update? This device has come a long way, and it’s time to focus on updating lots of new devices SE released in 2011. It’s still a great phone!  Thou you will never get a official update anymore, you can flash it with every ROM you want, which most of you actually did.

CyanogenMod 7.1 released for Xperia devices

Friday, October 21st, 2011
CyanogenMod logo

On September 28, FreeXperia group got support from SE, and they released CyanogenMod 7 for 2011 devices.

And now, they’re updated most of their Sony Ericsson ROMs to CM 7.1, but X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini pro aren’t supported as they said on blog, apparently, but you can download the X10 Mini Pro file here .

You can see changelog here , it seems that it features some nice stuff for all of you modders out there.

Haven’t really had a chance to try it out, since Mini (which I have) could be harmed if rooted, break the DRM, etc.
So if you flashed this brand new ROM, post comments on what new features you like the most, or maybe what you dislike about it?

Android 2.3.4 now official, SE Xperia Pro “coming soon”

Friday, September 30th, 2011

A few things to update you all on:

As we know, the 2.3.4 update that was promised in October has now started to roll out, though it is for generic world and nordic countries only. This is coming to the following Xperia devices:

Arc

Neo

Play

Ray

We are also hearing that it has started to arrive on the Xperia Mini too, so we expect the Xperia Mini Pro and the Xperia Active to follow suit soon.

Sony Ericsson officially announced it a few days ago, and you can find out what kits are officially receiving the update reading it here.

More good news: Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Walkman Live are now on pre-order from Play.com, with quite close expected release dates. Again, more details here.

In fact, speaking of Play, it seems that the Xperia Active got delayed. We have had no details why, but anyway the new expected release date is now later today. You can find it on the Play website here

SE UK are now selling their own phones via the SE website, instead of using se-store.co.uk. Now this makes things easier to control from SE’s point of view, but it may raise a concern or two;

We all (should) know about the Xperia Pro being delayed until Q4 2011. Also, Xperia Pro (according to se-store) was due to be released in “late September”.

Now whats so worrying about that? Well, since se-store had the Xperia Pro on pre-order, and I would imagine people have placed an order for it, I saw on twitter the other day asking about what has happened to their order:

Now to me, that does not read very well, and does not answer the question. Pre-orders mean very little, but surely someone knows at SE what is happening with the Xperia Pro? On the SE website we are still seeing the “coming soon” on the Xperia Pro.

However, we do have some good news with the Xperia Pro; it appears that it is finally being introduced into the United Kingdom on 6th October. Another blog has already reported this, but to be honest I would rather report on somewhere that has a bit more of a better reputation. It current stands at £300 (all bar a penny) at Play.com. You can read more details here.

Market of the Xperia Arc got updated

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

My Xperia Arc just got the update to the latest Android Market.
The Market did update automatically, it just needed longer to start, because of that I opened the new text message that I had and afterwards the new market was there.

It works quite fast and fluent on the Arc.
But the old market was faster and I have to say that I liked the old market more. But maybe that will change after I used the new marekt for some time.

I don’t know if the other Xperias got the update, too, but if not they should receive the update soon, too.

Android 4.0: SE say “no official decision made”

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Earlier on we brought the rather exciting news that Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) was on its way to the 2011 Xperia range of phones next year. Rather disappointingly, Sony Ericsson have now issued a new statement saying:

“When it comes to future platforms of the Android OS, we will make them available to consumers in a timely manner, as long as they improve the user experience and are viable from a hardware point of view”
Which basically means that Sony Ericsson havent (officailly anyway)  made up their minds, much like the Froyo debate that happened with the X10 line up, and we all know what the end result of that one was like. Somobile, however, are still hoping that Ice Cream Sandwich will find its way onto the 2011 Xperia line up.

My personal opinion? I think SE UK let it slip (much like SE Brazil regarding the Gingerbread update), but SE (International) are trying not to raise hopes.
