Posted by Michell | January 28th, 2008

We have already told you about Sony Ericsson’s newly announced PlayNow offerings and additions, and now we bring you a very cool video showing how the new features work. It’s definitely one of the coolest commercials from Sony Ericsson - at least that’s what I think :-)

Sony Ericsson Announces Music Deal & Launches PlayNow Uncut

Posted by scotsboyuk | January 27th, 2008

The glamorous South of France was the setting of Sony Ericsson’s unveiling of a deal with ten major record labels, which will add more than 5 million tracks to its catalog. The announcement was made at the MIDEM conference and it also saw Sony Ericsson launch PlayNow Uncut (formerly M-Buzz), which is a place for unsigned up and coming artists to be promoted.

The partnership with the record labels takes in major global players as well as regional labels: Sony BMG, Warner, EMI, The Orchard, IODA, The PocketGroup, Hungama, X5 Music, Bonnier Amigo and VidZone. The deal adds over 5 million tracks to Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow Arena. More deals with other regional labels are expected, which will further expand the range of music available from PlayNow Arena as well as allowing Sony Ericsson to better reflect local tastes.

Commenting on the PlayNow Arena service Sony Ericsson Executive Vice President Anders Runevad:

- We are delighted to announce deals with such high calibre record labels. This will help realise our vision for PlayNow™ arena as a service that will be developed in collaboration with our partners. Our commitment is to work with the industry to ensure we are building an experience-based and intuitive content delivery platform, enabling the development of an ecosystem that provides a unique experience for the consumer and a business model where everybody prospers.

The Play Now service also saw the addition of 250 new games and Sony Ericsson claim that their customers download more games to their handsets than users of other devices.

Initially PlayNow Arena will be available in Scandinavia and Finland in May this year whilst further European markets being added at the end of Q2. There will be further markets added throughout the Americas, Asia and Europe going into Q3 and Q4 with SOny Ericsson predicting that the service will be active in around thirty markets by the end of the year.

You can see the service at www.playnow-arena.com.

I’ve won Sony Ericsson fan stuff

Posted by Michell | December 22nd, 2007

Esato has a cool game called Playtime!, where the target of the game is to be the one to post a certain reply number (i.e. reply number 35). Then you’ll get a prize! I’ve won 6 of these rounds and have scored some Sony Ericsson stuff - a wrist strap, a SE fan and a black SE drawstring bag. Furthermore I’ve won some Motorola and Nokia stuff.

I would like to say thanks to Esato moderator masseur, who has made this possible, and also to PeterKay for donating some stuff!

Be sure to check it out at http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=161127&start=0

New Sony Ericsson clock patent and 2007 Content Awards winners

Posted by Michell | December 20th, 2007

se_clock_patent.jpgIt looks like Sony Ericsson has filed a patent about some sort of clock display. Here’s how it’s explained:

The invention relates to a clock display and particularly a clock display comprising a combined electronic display unit and mechanical clock hands. The clock hand has a visible state for showing the time and a transparent state used when in it is not desired to obscure the underlying display unit. The clock display may be incorporated in a portable device, such as a mobile telephone or a wrist watch.

se_cleaning_display.jpgIn addition to this patent, Sony Ericsson has also filed another one - this one being about a self cleaning display. The idea behind this patent - as described in one of SE patent applications - is to add a cleaning slider to the display and connect it to the opening/sliding mechanism of the phone itself. This doesn’t sound that nice in my ears and the concept picture does look a bit silly, too. I hope that’s not the best the R&D team can come up with!

Finally, the winners of the Sony Ericsson Content Awards 2007 have been found. In the category “Gaming” the winning game was “Playman Extreme Running”, in category “Imaging” the winning application was “Pull Face Image”, in “Productive Mobility” the winning application was (of course) “Opera Mini 4.0″. The “Music & Audio” award went to TrackID by Gracenote and the “Themes & Graphics” award finally went to “The geeks” themes and graphics. Furthermore Sony Ericsson felt it necessary to give a Special Recognition Award to “Vringo” for best use of the functionalities available in Sony Ericsson phones. Congratulations to all the winners!

5 things you DIDN’T know about Sony Ericsson

Posted by Michell | December 11th, 2007

1. Testing of prototypes. They’ve got a test center in Germany for testing of prototypes. They have fired all “out of house” prototype testers in order to keep everything behind closed doors - however operator testers have still got a limited access to non-announced prototypes.

2. Sony Ericsson leaks informations! Yep, you read that right. Sony Ericsson - again, yes, the mobile manufacturer itself - leaks informations about upcoming phones and plans. But of course the leaks are carefully planned.

3. Sony Ericsson keeps an eye on us. I’d bet you didn’t know that Sony Ericsson are eagerly reading the posts at different mobile phone forums - like Esato - and they also read mobile phone blogs. Sometimes even posting, too!

4. Successor’s successor. The K850 is fairly new, but the successor is already in the works and so is the successor of K850’s successor probably also. Mobile phone manufacturers are always years ahead in terms of successors as it usually takes about three years to create a mobile phone.

5. Extreme amount of ideas. But unfortunately most of the ideas will never become reality. For about every 8 ideas, one will become reality - and even this idea, will end up being changed lots of times before it gets announced and released. Some will even get ditched after the product announcement - one could be the Z700, which was cancelled or the programmable Bluetooth camera ball a few years back.

Create your own Sony Ericsson visiting card

Posted by Michell | November 29th, 2007

Along with the T650 that arrived here today was also a visiting card from Aldo Liguori (Corporate Vice President of Global Communications & PR). So I thought, why not have some fun out of it? So I opened up Office Publisher and started recreating the visiting card in Sony Ericsson style. I’ve purposely made some minor changes and let out some info so it doesn’t fully match the visiting cards from Sony Ericsson, and before using please note that this is by no means real or can be used in real life situations ;-)

The visiting card template can be found here.

Sony Ericsson Content Awards 2007

Posted by Michell | November 29th, 2007

content_awards.jpg

Sony Ericsson has launched a new and exciting site at their Developer website. It’s actually an awards showcase where some of the best Sony Ericsson content in 2007 will be awarded. There are five content focus areas:

  • Gaming
  • Imaging
  • Productive Mobility
  • Music and Audio
  • Themes and Graphics

Both J2ME and UIQ 3 content is featured and so are themes for both non smartphones and smartphones.

At the Flash website there are also a few videos of Mats Lindoff (Corporate Vice President) and Jens Greve (Senior Manager and Head of Sony Ericsson Developer World) talking about the future of mobile phones and mobile content. Quite interesting, if you ask me.

In my opinion all the nominees have a good chance of winning, but there can only be one in each category - and you can take part of deciding which one!

You’ll find the flash website right here and more information about the Awards here.
