Video: Comparing the C901 and C903 camera flash performance

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Here’s a quick video showing the main differences between a proper xenon flash on the C901 and the rather crappy LED flash on the C903 – and it of course also shows how superior the C901 is when it comes to image quality. Enjoy! :-)

New “Try the phone” sites

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

As some of you probably know, the C510, W705, W715 and W395 have been released quite recently. Just like with every other newly-released phone, SE has made several phone UI demo sites available. Yep, that means you can try out these phones on-line before eventually buying them. And no, I didn’t mean to imply anything with that last sentence…

Here are the links:

The W715 demo is the same as the W705 one.

Gallery: Sony Ericsson C901

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Here’s our photo gallery of the upcoming Sony Ericsson C901 in the black and pink variants. We’ve got close to fifty images in this gallery, so there should be quite a bit of stuff to look at :)

We’ll be putting some C901’s up for grabs when it gets released :)

The C905 – now in 3D!

c905-3d

Sony Ericsson has recently put one of those 3D phone demos on some of their regional sites. In my opinion, it should have been available a bit earlier, but oh well, better late than never… Cool thing this time is that it also has small clips incorporated into it that demonstrate some of the phone’s features, but without using the 3D engine (unlike previous 3D demos). Have a  look:

Note: I couldn’t access it on the UK site, so the link directs to the Bulgarian site. The demo is still in English, though.

C901 promo video online

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Surprisingly, I managed to find C901’s promo video as well. Countless hours have I spent hunting this little gem for your viewing pleasure, so I expect you to enjoy it… or else…

Quite frankly, I like this one a lot more than my other recent find.

‘Idou’ is Sony Ericsson’s upcoming 12.1-megapixel phone

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

idou

Along with the launching of Entertainment Unlimited, Sony Ericsson showcased an upcoming mobile phone by the concept ‘Idou’, which is going to give us a glimpse of what lies ahead for us, and what Sony Ericsson is currently working on. The ‘Idou’ is one of a number of projects that will be launched this year under the umbrella of Entertainment Unlimited.

The ‘Idou’ is a cameraphone with special focus on media. It will feature a 12.1-megapixel camera with auto focus and an array of advanced camera touch features and a xenon flash. I’m guessing the sensor in this phone will the Sony’s new 1/2.5-inch 12.25 megapixel sensor for mobile phones. That would be awesome! The Media menu will now be fully optimized for the 3.5-inch 16:9 widescreen touch screen, and will enable you to tap directly into your favourite movies, TV-series, video clips and tracks.

The phone will be based on what will become the Symbian Foundation operating system, which means that thousands of applications will be available online. PlayNow will be pre-installed, and will allow you to personalize the phone.

- “Entertainment Unlimited is at the core of Sony Ericsson’s philosophy, building on the strength of our great entertainment assets such as Walkman and Cyber-shot phones and our unique service and applications integration.  Many of the strategic initiatives we’ve announced in the past year have laid the internal framework to launch this new consumer proposition to the market and Sony Ericsson is now ready to drive the next wave of market development with Entertainment Unlimited”, said Hideki Komiyama, President at Sony Ericsson, in a press release.

The ‘Idou’ will be available during the second half of 2009 – naturally marketed by a different product name.

Here’s a neat little video of the Smile Shutter feature in action on the Sony Ericsson C905. It seems incredibly speedy, doesn’t it? :)

Sony Ericsson has now published the videos for the C903 and W395. I especially like the W395 video, but both of them are quite cool.

You’ll find the videos after the break. They will begin automatically. (more…)

Duel: Sony Ericsson C905 vs Nikon D90

Friday, February 13th, 2009

header

I had originally promised you a camera comparison between the Sony Ericsson C905 and the Nikon D80, but I didn’t have time to do this comparison back then. Now, we’re back with a large comparison between the C905 and the Nikon D90 (don’t have the D80 with me currently, so this is the other choice).

About this duel
All the samples shot with the C905 were shot with automatic settings and flash disabled, unless needed. All the samples were shot in high quality JPEG mode. The Nikon D90 was set to aperture priority mode (f/3.8), with flash disabled. All the samples were shot in RAW (uncompressed file format), and converted to TIFF with Adobe Lightroom 2.2 using default conversion settings.

It’s important that you’re aware of the fact that you can completely change how the pictures look when you shoot in RAW format. If they’re too dark, you can simply knock up the exposure in the post-processing without affecting the quality of the picture. This is not possible with pictures shot in JPEG format, which means the C905 is suffering from a severe disadvantage even before we kick off the comparison.

It’s also rather important to point out that there’s no such thing as a perfect RAW converter, and that they’ll all convert the RAW images differently. Most of the unprocessed RAW images, in my opinion, are better than the converted ones, but like I said earlier on, you can always change the look of RAW images.

I will briefly comment on each set of samples, and pick a definitive winner in the end of this post. All the following samples are 100 percent crops of the original pictures. The JPEGs are unprocessed and the RAW images have been converted, as explained earlier on. To cut down on the bandwidth, I’ve decided not to include the full resolution samples. (more…)
