Mobile-review is gearing up to take a first look at Anzu, otherwise known as the Sony Ericsson X12. However, before they get around to that they’re playing a wee game asking what you think the specifications of the handset will be. Go and take a peek and maybe offer a suggestion yourself.

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010Leaked Win Phone 7 Devices: X7 & X7 Mini
Monday, November 15th, 2010It’s not news to hear that Sony Ericsson are developing handsets for Microsoft’s new Windows Phone platform, but here we have what could be the first leaked information about said handsets. The two devices, named the X7 and the X7 Mini, appear in what are purported to be leaked slides.
The X7 looks to be sporting a 4.3 inch screen with a 1.2 GHz processor nestling under the hood. The camera is a not too shabby 8.1 MP affair that supports 710p recording. The handset also, curiously, has support for HDMI output. I say curious because Windows Phone apparently doesn’t support HDMI so this could be the fatal flaw in an otherwise convincing hoax or it could be that Windows Phone, at least where Sony Ericsson is concerned, does indeed support HDMI.
The X7 Mini is a smaller version of the X7 although with a 3.5 inch screen it can hardly be called ‘mini’. The processor isn’t quite as fast, being the more standard fare of a 1 GHz effort. The camera is beefe dup though, 10.1 MP and with x3 optical zoom and xenon flash.
Release dates, etc are of course non-existent at the moment, but given that these handsets are slated for next year expect to see them at MWC.

Spoof Android Apps Threaten Personal Data
Thursday, November 11th, 2010A newly discovered bug in Android could potentially allow malicious software to rummage through your data or even steal your hard earned cash. That’s the news from two security researchers at Intel who say they have managed to build an app that does those very things.
For those unfamiliar with Android whenever you download an app you are presented with a list of the various services and information that that particular app will have access to. If you decide that the app will have too much access to your data you can decide not to install it.
Well the two researchers have managed to build a ’spoof app’, basically it’s an app that appears harmless itself, but which then downloads other apps that do the dirty work. The researchers created a level pack for Angry Birds to demonstrate the bug and the spoof level pack could then be used to download apps that tracked the user’s location or even sent paid for texts.
It’s a pretty serious bug and Google won’t want it lying around for long so hopefully we see a fix coming out soon. Until then make sure you only download from reputable publishers and that any apps you install really are what they say they are.
New Android Handsets, Old Android OS
Wednesday, November 10th, 2010In all the excitement of today’s X12 leak it would have been easy to miss a rather interesting comment Mobile-Review’s Eldar Murtazin made about the other handsets Sony Ericsson are planning on launching next year.
Eldar said that Sony Ericsson showed him seven handsets and from the tweet you can see that most are Android based. So far so good. However, Eldar then mentions that Sony Ericsson are again using their own custom UI and that the handsets are running older versions of Android. Not so good.
Timescape and Mediascape are actually pretty good, but if that comes at the price of an older version of Android I say that’s too high a price to pay. Of course these handsets that Eldar saw were no doubt prototypes so perhaps the finished products will be running Gingerbread, but as anyone who has ever owned an X10 can tell you, that is most definitely not a sure fire thing.
Video: X10 Multi-Touch Hack
Wednesday, November 10th, 2010Some of you may remember the ‘does it? doesn’t it?’ sage over the X10’s multi-touh capabilities before, and shortly after it launched. For weeks there were conflicting reports that the device did and did not have the capability to support multi-touch input. Finally the matter was settled when Sony Ericsson announced that the handset could not technically support the feature. Case closed.
… well no. Steup the intrepid boffins at XDA Developers. As you can see from the video below they’ve managed to come up with a hack that gives the X10 rudimentary multi-touch input. It’s by no means perfect and currently it’s not available to the X10 owning public, but as the say goes, where there is a will, there is a way.
Anzu: New X12 Flagship
Wednesday, November 10th, 2010Sony Ericsson’s next flagship device, codenamed Anzu, has had the leak treatment on the web today with a picture appearing over on the Xperia X10 Blog. Whilst details are obviously still sketchy at this stage there is some information about this new handset available, although it predictably raises more questions than it answers.
First off is the name, according Eldar Murtazin the handset will be officially known as the X12. Announcement wise we’re probably looking at late this year, before Christmas, or possibly early next year with a launch window being pegged for early next year. The X12 is one of seven devices that Eldar says Sony Ericsson have planned for the first half of next year.
The screen is a hefty 4.3 inch effort and the device is described as being ‘very, very slim’. Interestingly enough though X12 is said to belong to the same category as the PlayStation phone and they are apparently being tested side by side. Now with both devices having the same screen size, or at least the same aspect ratio, one has to wonder whether this means that the X12 will have access to the new Z-System gaming platform that Sony Ericsson is launching.
The picture above shows the device running Android 2.1, which may have rung some alarm bells with you, especially those of you using an X10. However, the consensus is that the device will actually ship with Gingerbread (Android 2.3) and for Sony Ericsson’s sake let’s hope that’s true!
