Windows Phone 7 For Android (Sort Of)

Friday, December 10th, 2010

MetroUI has been one of the standout features of Windows Phone 7 and now Android users can try it out (sort of) with a new theme released for Android devices.

The theme essentially makes your Android device look like a Windows Phone 7 device (sort of). To be clear though this is just a theme and to be blunt, not a very customisable one at that. The tiles don’t display any live data as they do on actual Windows Phone 7 devices, they are just shortcuts to launch apps.

The theme itself is restricted to either a dark or  alight colour scheme with no other colours being available for the background. You can at least change the icon colours. If you want to re-position any shortcuts you have to first remove them then re-attach them. A bit of a hassle really.

Annoyingly the rather spiffy animations found on actual Windows Phone handsets are not present.

If I’m not selling you on the benefits of this theme (which costs $2.99 by the way) then why not be convinced by the rather inappropriately excited tone of the music in this video?

Patent Ideas Shows Inbuilt Projection Screen

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Phone with inbuilt projectors are hardly a new concept, indeed the idea has been around for years, but it has never really got off the ground. Well a Sony Ericsson patent is putting a new twist on that old idea … an inbuilt projection screen.

The device shown in the illustration has an inbuilt projector, but it also features an extendible screen that the projector can use to actually display content. It’s actually not a bad idea if you are going to cram a projector into a phone in the first place since it solves the problem of finding a suitable surface to use the projector on. It also means more screen real estate for things like watching films.

Mind you I’m not sure how useful it would be beyond that, especially if it added bulk to the device with a projection screen tucked away.

PlayStation Phone To Launch March 2011?

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Rumour time folks! The latest gossip on the interwebz is that the much hyped PlayStation phone will be launching next March.

The rumour comes from ITProPortal, who claim to have spoken with a source inside Sony Ericsson who confirmed the launch window. The handset will allegedly go on show at the key industry events of MWC and CeBIT (no real surprise if it did of course) before finally hitting the shops in March.

Now don’t forget that there is also a wee rumour doing the rounds that the handset will be unveiled tomorrow, 9th December. We don’t have long to wait and find out!

Rumour: X10 To Get Froyo?

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Don’t shoot the messenger if this proves to be a lame duck, but a rumour has appeared on the interwebz claiming that the X10 will be receiving another update … to Froyo.

The rumour originated from a Sony Ericsson representative in Turkey so it’s sort of semi-legitimate. Now of course said representative may just have gotten the wrong end of the stick, but he claims that the update will take place sometime in Q2 of 2011.

It’s not a wild rumour really, it is possible after all, but even if it is true it still means the X10 is playing catch-up as Gingerbread will be well and truly out by then. Hell we may even be looking at Honeycomb by that point. Even so, an update is always welcome, even if it is a little late.

PlayStation Phone Announcement 9th December?

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

With all the recent chatter over the alleged PlayStation phone (which seems a lot more real after Bert Nordberg’s teasing) you might have easily overlooked arguably the most important question: when?

We’ve seen leaked pictures and heard Sony Ericsson’s President dropping hints, but all we have is a vague idea that it might, just might, be announced late this year and more likely early next year. Well a picture of a press invitation sent out by the head of Sony Ericsson in France suggests that day could in fact be 9th December.

The translated text reads:

Pierre Perron and his team invite you to the most anticipated presentation of the past 10 years… Thursday, December 9th, at 8pm

If the invitation proves to be authentic it would mean we are just two weeks away from the first official unveiling of the device. Note that on the invitation they have included the familiar four PlayStation buttons alongside a button depictng a phone. Hardly concrete proof of an impending PlayStation phone announcement I grant you, but it adds yet more fuel to the fire.

Bert Nordberg Teases Over PlayStation Phone

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Bert Nordberg, Sony Ericsson’s CEO and also apparently a bit of a tease, has been dropping some hints about the leaked PlayStation phone.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal Mr Nordberg made the following comment:

There’s a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere

That’s certainly a loaded comment! Was he speaking about the PlayStation phone? Anzu perhaps? Something else entirely?

Well later in the same interview he was asked why Sony Ericsson hadn’t produced a PlayStation phone yet. Mr Nordberg’s response:

I haven’t dug into that history, but the future might be brighter.

That sounds more promising. If that wasn’t enough to get the PlayStation phon rumour mill swinging again he dropped in another hint, saying that he wanted to make a lot of ‘noise’ at MWC in february with a new product. Again this could be Anzu he was talking about, but equally it could be the PlayStation device. As if to underline that very possibility he added: “Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn’t we use that?
