I came across an interesting little article that was linked on Engadget. The article in questions reported that Jaakko Kaidesoja, Nokia’s head of gaming, has been making some bold statements in relation to the much rumoured PlayStation phone. Mr Kaidesoja is quoted as having said “I’m not scared about anybody.”
This was followed up by Mr Kaidesoja questioning Sony Ericsson’s ability to produce a gaming handset: “The real question is how do they [Sony Ericsson] do it? Can they create a link between the PSP games and a phone? Can they do the multiplayer and online stuff? We’ve been doing this for two years and it hasn’t been easy.”
They are certainly interesting comments for Nokia’s head of gaming to make in public. One obvious interpretation would be that Nokia see Sony Ericsson as the manufacturer best placed to release a gaming handset, no doubt parent Sony’s expertise in the field and the PlayStation brand having much to do withsuch a perception.
The other point that one may infer from the comments is that Nokia take the idea of a possible PlayStation handset seriously enough to publicly comment on it. Of course that isn’t proof that such a handset will come to fruition, but it will no doubt add fuel to the rumour conflagration that is blazing brightly around the idea of a PlayStation handset.
It’s arguably easy to overlook the G series in the midst of Xperia being announced and the news that Cybershot handsets would use the new C series designation. However, they really are worth a look as I was reminded by this video. The G900 in particular comes across as a nice little device, sporting a 5 MP camera and Wi-Fi as it does. The G700 is no slouch either although it does lack Wi-Fi, but still packs a respectable 3.2 MP camera. Neither handset is as powerful as the X1, and yet there is something about them that strikes me as being useful and yet simple at the same time.
The C902 features face recognition technology, which tracks a face in a photograph in order to focus on it. Here we can see the technology in action; watch as the subject moves his head and the handset tracks the location of his face.
JUSTAMP are showing some rather smashing looking SO905iCS unboxing pictures. The SO905i is the first Cybershot branded handset to be released in Japan, and true to form has some impressive features such as a 5 MP AF camera with 3x optical zoom, and a rather impressive WVGA screen (hint for SE: your European customers wouldn’t mind seeing these sort of specs in their Cybershot handsets!).
The chaps over at se4m.com have got their hands on a picture of what appears to be an as yet unknown Sony Ericsson clamshell handset. As yet specifications are unknown, but rather interestingly the picture includes a blurb about always knowing your location. That might suggest GPS …
