Sony Ericsson 5″ Android Tablet / Miniature Netbook

Friday, June 4th, 2010

This image allegedly shows the first glimpse of an upcoming Android device from Sony Ericsson though it is unclear exactly what category the device should fall into. With a 5.5″ screen it is surely too large to be considered as a smartphone while the sliding keyboard discounts it from being a true tablet. Perhaps then this is more of a miniature netbook, similar to the HTC Shift, but here we have Android 2.1 rather than a Windows based OS.

It is at least refreshing to finally come across something Eclair related from SE, however, testing of this device is believed to be in the very early stages so it seems they are still moving at the speed of  quadriplegic tortoise when it comes to Android OS versions. Still rumors are that the device will see the light of day in Q3, we can but wait and see.

Sony Ericsson Android Tutorials (with app)

We already know that Sony Ericsson like Android and it’s good to see them trying to make their own mark on it with things like Timescape and Mediascape but now they’re starting to go the extra mile by providing tutorials to help others create things for Android too!

Recently the Sony Ericsson Development Blog posted the first part of their single finger zoom tutorial and followed that up today with a 3D list tutorial. Make no mistake these are not just token gestures to showcase what they’ve been up to, there is genuinely useful information for budding Android developers in here with step by step guides and sample code enabling you to learn from SE’s development. Luckily for the rest of us who have no idea how to develop, they have also been considerate enough to include a couple of videos which do showcase what they have been up to:

Sony Ericsson’s generosity does not end there though, as you may notice in the second video, they have also produced an Android app called “Sony Ericsson Tutorials”. This is available on the Android Market now and of course it is free so download it to your X10 right away to get a feel for the single finger zoom and 3D block list as well as keeping an eye out for more tutorials to come, I for one am looking forward to them.

Xperia X10 Rooted

Monday, May 17th, 2010
As with all Android devices, there have been many people striving to get the X10 rooted since it’s release a few weeks ago and it should come as no surprise that the particular group who have managed to achieve this are from xda-developers.com

Now this isn’t quite open to everyone just yet as it requires the use of SETool, something many of you here will no doubt be familiar with. It is however a big crack in the X10 shell and you should be able to mess with things in no time meaning Eclair could come to the X10 much sooner than Sony Ericsson would have thought.

Xperia X10 Mini Ad

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

As the X10 Mini gets ever closer, more and more snippets emerge. The latest of which is the TV Ad for the U.S.

Apparently “you can’t keep your hands off it”. Here’s a thought Sony Ericsson, release this one on time and some people might actually put their hands ON it!

Two Hands Not Required

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Amid all the recent furore surrounding multitouch on the X10 Series of handsets, Sony Ericsson have been far from convincing or decisive but their latest addition to the Product Blog is refreshingly to the point in stating “we just love” one handed operation.

This is of course referring to the Mini variants and it’s good to hear that SE have specifically concentrated on focusing the user experience of these miniaturised smartphones on the single hand. It would have been an easy mistake to make to simply scale things down and end up with a device which was fiddly and awkward to use, that isn’t that case twith the X10 Mini / Mini Pro at all. There is also another hands – on video from the SEPB team which, while incredibly slow going, shows another glimpse of the excellent single handed zoom solution….something I would very much like to see added to the full size X10.

As for multitouch, SE state that they feel it would “actually just destroy the simplicity of using these products” and I would be inclined to agree. This was also importantly followed up by a very decisive statement…finally:

“To avoid any speculation I can confirm that we do not have any intention to implement multi touch on X10 mini and X10 mini pro.”

My only concern is that while they may be correct in not implementing multitouch into the UI, it may be a mistake not to support it for third party applications.

Atomic Android!

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Posted Image

Another day another photoshop of the Android making friends with a new logo ;)

As we are all well aware that the 1GHz Snapdragon processor for Qualcomm has been a major step forward for Android devices and in fact mobile devices across the board, well how another 50+% processing power on top of that?! That’s what could be heading our way thanks to the new Atom processors announced by Intel.

New Intel® Atom™ Z6xx is aiming to provide speeds of up to 1.5 GHz for high-end smartphones and up to 1.9 GHz for tablets and other handheld designs as well as offering support for Wi-Fi, 3G/HSPA, WiMAX and mobile platforms such as Android. The chip has been created with 3-D graphics, video encode / decode, memory and display controllers all in a single “system-on-chip” design and perhaps most significantly will offer considerably lower power consumption:

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 4, 2010

“Collectively these new chips deliver significantly lower power including >50x reduction in idle power, >20x reduction in audio power, and 2-3x reductions across browsing and video scenarios – all at the platform level when compared to Intel’s previous-generation product. These power savings translate into >10 days of standby, up to 2 days of audio playback and 4-5 hours of browsing and video battery life. When combined with 1.5-3x higher compute performance, 2-4x richer graphics, >4x higher Javascript performance, and support for full HD 1080p high-profile video decoding and 720p HD video recording, these low-power innovations bring a rich, PC-like visual experience to powerful handheld computers”

With that quote in mind and the prospect of what Google have just got their hands on, we may have some very exciting handsets indeed to look forward to!

BumpTop – The Future Of Android?

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Some of you may have heard of BumpTop before but they have recently come to light again due to the fact that they have just been bought by Google! For anyone who hasn’t seen BumpTop in action you might want to check out the demo on YouTube:

So what does this mean? Well having bought the company Google have immediately removed BumpTop from sale and the free version is available for only a few more days from bumptop.com sugesting that they have plans to make use of it. The most likely place for them to do so is of course in Chrome OS but it’s not unreasonable to expect some of the features to trickle down into Android as well. This is certainly something I’d like to play around with on the large screen of the Xperia X10.

Competition For The X10 Mini/Mini Pro?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Don’t get too excited this isn’t a competition to win one of Sony Ericsson’s diminutive ‘droids but rather the emergence of another device which might be looking muscle in on their territory.

So far the X10 Mini has been the smallest Android device around with the X10 Mini Pro a little bigger to accommodate the slide out qwerty…and that’s not about to change but there is at least going to be more than just the SE pair in this miniature smartphone category.

This is the Vodafone V845, produced by the not very interesting manufacturer Huawei, and while it may not look particularly appealing it is small at 100 x 55 x 13mm. This puts it into the same sort of market that the X10 Mini/Mini Pro will be aiming for and it does actually have a few advantages. Firstly at 2.8″ the screen is larger than the 2.55″ Sony Ericsson’s and it’s also packing Android 2.1 Eclair rather than the stale Donut we should expect on the X10’s. This makes the V845 the smallest Eclair Android in existance but I don’t think Sony Ericsson have too much to worry about just yet. This thing falls short in the camera department and is leagues behind the Xperia devices in style and appeal. It may be a sign though that the mini Android market is about to get busier.

Set Opera Mini as default Android browser

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Opera Mini has been available on Android for some time now but even since it’s full release there’s been a problem. The browser is outstanding, lightning fast, slick to use and packing some great features like Opera Link to sync your bookmarks but it can not be set as the system’s default browser. This meant that regardless of how good Opera is, you’d always be taken to the Android browser when clicking an external link e.g. from an email or app etc.

Well now a developer by the name of DUMAPIC has come to the rescue with OperaBridge. This simple app is available now on the Android Market and will send external links straight to Opera Mini by default.

All you need to do is install Opera Mini, then OperaBridge and the next time you click a link you will see a “complete action using” pop-up. Choose OperaBridge as the default action and there you have it, Opera Mini is now your main browser.

PS- this was posted from my X10 using the WordPress app.

Xperia X10 WiFi Bug: Cause Found!

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

As is customary with new Sony Ericsson devices, several irritating bugs can be expected until updates start to be rolled out and the Xperia X10 is no exception. The bug I’m pertaining to at the moment is the dropping of the phones WiFi connection for seemingly no reason, even while in use, only for it to then reconnect and operate normally after 10-20 seconds or so.

Some of you may have experienced this strange loss of WiFi connectivity, other will not. It’s currently unclear whether this bug was introduced with the R1FA016 firmware update or if the R1FA014 version is also affected but I have managed to track down the apparent cause of the problem.

Since updating to R1FA016 I had been noticing frequent WiFi disconnections even while actively browsing. Being in an area of poor GSM coverage at home this was particularly irritating with little or no network connection to fall back on for continued browsing. Shortly though it became apparent that this poor coverage is not only a separate irritation but is in fact directly causing the problems with the WiFi on the X10!

As you can see in the video below the WiFi is happily connected until the phone loses network coverage. At this point you would usually expect your WiFi to carry on regardless but the X10 mysteriously decides to turn off it’s WiFi before reactivating it and reconnecting to the network automatically:

If this wasn’t bad enough however, the same thing happens when the phone reconnects to the GSM network:

As you can imagine, in an area where the signal comes and goes quite frequently, this makes the WiFi about as reliable a connection as a water soluble rope in a rain storm! My concern at this point is how long it will take Sony Ericsson to acknowledge this issue and issue a fix, especially as it will not be experienced by users who don’t suffer from dropped network coverage.
