Sony Ericsson G705 Reviewed

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

The folks at GsmArena have just published a comprehensive review of the Sony Ericsson G705. Here’s what they had to say:

Guts to stand up to smartphones and utterly self-effacing looks is a nice little twist we guess. It’s like the G705 is there saying “Misjudge me, be my guest”.

Yes, with a feature set like that, looks are the last thing it needs to boost self-esteem. Actually, if that’s how midrange spec sheets are shaping, we dare not imagine what better treats future top devices hold in stock for us. If nothing else, Sony Ericsson G705 deserves credit for pioneering the shift.

It seems Sony Ericsson do have a winner here.

Known Issues

  • ActiveX is disabled – Flash plugins and embedded video streaming do not work.
  • Custom software keyboards (IME) will be buggy at best, not working at worst.
  • No multilingual build – Only English is supported. Problems with other languages (and input methods) are not unexpected.
  • Installation on memory cards may cause problems.
  • Text wraps in overview mode.
  • Main testing has been done on English HTC devices (Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Touch, Touch Dual, Touch Cruise, TyTN and Wizard) and Samsung i900.
  • Landscape mode does not take keyboard position into consideration.
  • Devices with low memory might get Out Of Memory (OOM) messages.
  • Opera is always running when the Widgets Manager is running.
  • On devices with hight DPI some of the pre-installed widgets look small.
  • When an URL is opened from a widget, there will be an extra browser window opened in the background that’s not working properly.

Sony Ericsson patents automatic zoom for its cameraphones

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Sony Ericsson has just recently filed a patent for automatic zooming on its cameraphones. The basic idea is to make zooming automatic by following the handset movement. When you move a camera away from your body, the image zooms in, as you move it back, the image zooms out. The technology involves accelerometers and proximity sensors to measure the movement of the handset, it’s distance from your body and a software to convert the movement values into a zoom parameters. So if some of you feel its too laborious to press a button to zoom in and out, Sony Ericsson might just come out with the right product for you in a few years.

Friday, September 19th, 2008

The Unwired website has an extensive hands-on video of a pre-production unit of the XPERIA X1.  They claim that though the device was still based on the pre-production hardware, the ROM  build was way newer, from early september, so it should be a pretty good indication of how the final firmware will be. The 16 minutes long video, among other things, shows that switching from portrait to landscape mode takes far less time than before and also the panels start much faster than before.
